In the cities it's usually more of an issue with dropouts who ended up on heroin. A lot of the ordinary folks moved to Raleigh or Charlotte, etc., to follow their employers and you're around a high percentage of people who are stranded with no opportunities or dreams.

It's not *that* bad if you have a good job and your own circle, but not exactly something most people are looking to add to their lives.

We have a mid-term plan to relocate to Arizona, personally.
Phoenix is on the list. After I stack some cash for a few years, I'm headed out that side. Good luck with your move man

Grew up on LI, went to school in upstate NY, now live in City. Pluses and minuses of all three. LI is great if you want t raise a family and send your kid to a good school, but it is also boring as fuk with like zero culture. Also, property is insanely expensive unless you live like way out east where the farms are. Upstate NY is beautiful during the summer for like 3 months. Then the rest of the time the weather is literally fighting you and trying to kick your ass.

Maybe look out of state, I am currently in a similar situation I kinda want to GTFO the city but I have a decent job here and my family is close by.

What part of Upstate did you go?

City life is cool, but it wears on you after a while. I'm choosing upstate because it looks so damn cheap, and the hiking trails/water looks like it will be fun. I'm a solitary person so those activities are perfect for me.

I kind of figured you were underestimating how small some of these towns are, but if that's really what you're down for, then do check out the Finger Lakes. There are a bunch of nice little towns all together, Skaneateles, Auburn, Geneva, Seneca Falls, Casanovia, that pull some tourists for the wineries and it's beautiful and peaceful year-round. You can rent boats and stuff. Essential employees sometimes ski and snowshoe to work in the winter for LOLs. Not the weird Rust Belt drug drama you get in places like Binghamton, and Ithaca and Syracuse close enough when you want a bigger town.

Never considered White Plains before. Is the cost of living comparable to further upstate or more NYC?

It's legit AF up there if you don't need nightlife. Old colonial homes and driving around the Finger Lakes like...

As for someone that lived near enough the city (Rockland County) all my life until I went to Buffalo for school, and pretty much been all over the place in NY...

-If you want a location that has the closest thing to an NYC Vibe but isnt exactly NYC then White Plains is your best bet.

-DO NOT (i repeat DO NOT) live in Rockland County. Theres nothing to do there and we all used to go to White Plains/NYC for sh** to do. Unless you want to totally isolate yourself from all of that then imo...

-You should head upstate (legit upstate like north of Bing) Buffalo is a solid upstart spot and not too expensive (especially if you're used to city prices). It all depends on your personality and what kind of life you plan on living from here on out. That is really going to determine where you should go. NY is pretty cool in the sense that every area is vastly different.

    - Weather really shouldn't really be a factor though, if youre up north youre used to it all regardless. Snow is snow everywhere. Upstate NY gets a bit more but nothing too drastic.

    Albany area checking in,

Basically right in between the Adirondacks and Catskills, so plenty of options for hiking day trips.
Working on the Adirondack 46er list at the moment, and plan on doing the Catskill 3500 club afterwards.
Both trail lists combine for a good portion of the Northeast 111 club, which includes parts of the white mountains and I believe a few in Maine, including the end of the Appalachian Trail, Mount Katahdin.
There are plenty of things I don't like about New York State, but I wont complain about the vast opportunities for outdoor activities up here.

White Plains seems like it's just as expensive as NYC, and I'm also not a party/club type of person. Yea, weather is no issue though I haven't driven in a bad snow storm in years. It's something that I'll just have to get used to.

Are you headed back to LI brah? LI has some nice houses but people are racist as fuk lol. Even in places like Lynbrook that's not even that far from Queens. I used to work in Lynbrook and although the neighborhood is nice I wouldn't want to live there.

I would move back to Tampa if anything, but Miami is where my sis and bro-in-law are and I don't want to go there. Nothing but clubbing and partying and that's not really me. Upstate seems like a new challenge

    http://goldensnowglobe.com/current-t...owiest-cities/

Syracuse gets the most snow in the country consistently. Syracuse gets more snow than Rochester by over 2 feet. Rochester is in second place in the country and gets 2 feet more than Anchorage Alaska, which is in 3rd place.

Can confirm, snow is NOT snow everywhere.

No hate, just saying, if you don't like snow, I got some bad news.

You want to move out of NYC and expect housing to decrease? lmao. Its very comparably expensive until you get to bumblefuk New York.

Enough negative what I WOULD recommend if you want to do all that hiking and driving chit you wanna do and save money, move to Jersey. Srs. I fukkin hate Jersey because I am a native New Yorker, BUT, it has what you want, better wages and opportunities than upstate NY, hiking and woodsy chit if you make it to central/lower Jersey, and you still have MUCH better access to fun things to do over bumblefuk upstate.
Dont come to Jersey. We're full and we suck/stink.

Cant wait to get out of this over taxed, crooked state. If you think NYC is bad dont come here

why limit yourself to just upstate NY?

IMO if you're gonna move, you might as well do it big and move to somewhere you really really want to live

i've never lived in upstate NY (just visited it to see niagara falls) and it just seems boring, dreary, gray and old as fuk. weather is pretty horrible too

i live in central NC and love it here. great weather, diverse community, low cost of living, plus i can drive 2 hours one way and go to the beach, or drive 2 hours the other way and get to the mountains

It won't be permanent. I want to see too much of the world to settle and buy a house. I'm closest to upstate and a lot of things I want to see/do so that's a good place to start. By my mid thirties I want to head out West to Colorado, Nevada etc... Upstate seems like a place I can live minimally and save money while seeing/doing cool things.

why not head out west right away brah? seems like a pain to pack everything and move now knowing that a couple of years from now you'll want to move elsewhere?

plus i'm sure there's plenty of places out west with lower cost of living than NYC so you can save more
