Thanks. I was hoping for that

With your "smart trainer," do you need accessories to measure things like speed and cadence or does it know because it's "smart?"

Its crazy how quick it does deteriorate ! I took 2 months off and my friends said, hey, lets go climb this mountain. So, we did, but he was talking smack. He took 1 week off and didn't do so well himself. So I told him, don't talk smack about me being out of shape not riding for 2 months and taking me out to the hardest climb in the area as my first climb being back lol

Measures speed and (apparent watts) I wear hr sensor and candence sensor on my shoe.

Wahoo sensors so i can use them on the ipad without a dongle. Picked up instantly.

I do have the poverty scale of smart trainers. But can simulate hills to 8% iirc and wattage max is enough for me. Highest i gone without dying is 700+

so i'm really stupid on the smart trainer thing and Zwift

if I understand, a Smart Trainer:

    1. Will change resistance in time with Zwift if, for example, you start to climb a hill on Zwift
    2. Will measure cadence and power (higher end models) so you don't need to use a bike with a power meter or cadence sensor
    3. Passes all this info to Zwift, so that you don't need to have a Garmin Edge (for example) hooked up to track your mileage and such

    is this correct?

Spot on. Mine is lower end tacx but also has power and both bluetooth and ant+

I have ran both my tacx and wahoo bolt to compare hr and candence. Both zwift wahoo show same results.

How does it change the resistance? Isn't resistance directly related to your speed only or is there braking involved too for simulating the resistance of a hill?

We use tacx neo smarts at our shop. On course mode (swift) it will up the resistance for climbs and even spin your freewheel on a descent.
On workout mode it will adjust resistance to help you hit a target wattage at your current cadence.

Haven't ridden since August (I been depressed. Funny, because riding is generally my main anti-depression remedy).

Anyway, think I'll order a new jersey for Christmas to get back in the swing of things and take the old girl out for a spin.

If Santa also brings me that new gopro (the old one was run-over by a car as you may recall), stay tuned for frequent photos/video updates of my urban commutes, jaunts and escapades for 2018.

    Meanwhile, Merry Christmas __

I think I biked more this summer than any other and had been wanting a Turbo trainer for a month or two. I ended up getting the Tacx Blue Motion on Black Friday yesterday but I hesitated between the Blue Motion and Booster models and am still not sure if it would be worth exchanging it for the Booster.

It is noisier than I thought but I think it's largely because I'm using an incompatible tire for now. The benefits I can see of the Booster over the Blue Motion are:
    -Quieter
    -More watts
-Front wheel base included (I just noticed this last night, had I noticed before my purchase it might have made me get the Booster)

Do you think it's worth exchanging it for the Booster model? Would it feel any more real? I also noticed it has a slightly lighter flywheel effect than the Blue Motion.

BTW I'm happy I need to put it at resistance 3-4 to simulate flat road, that means I can sort of simulate downhill with level 1-2 (I effortlessly reach 40kmh/25mph at level 1 which is not realistic for flat road), I was expecting level 1 to simulate flat road.

Edit: I'm starting to think it's not worth exchanging my Tacx Blue Motion for the Tacx Booster, the benefits are minimal (quieter, slightly more resistance, front wheel support included) and it has a lighter flywheel effect and ferrite vs. neodymium magnets. There's also videos of Boosters getting noisy, I assume from dirt getting stuck in the enclosure, so having the flywheel fully exposed might not be a bad thing and looks cool, but I also like the enclosed look of the Booster.

Yeah, my email is being flooded daily with Black Friday etc. ads. Been resisting the urge but they finally broke me and I opened one. So many good bargains its staggering. Even some name brand jerseys are ridiculously reduced in price. Its the only time I can afford the good stuff.

I figured I'd try to get in to road biking, since I love mtb so much, and just to change it up and maybe do some 25,50,100 mi. races.

Bought this off of my buddy who is a sales rep for Specialized. He's ridden it approximately two times.

2018 Roubaix Comp for $1500. Retail is $3400.

How much would an extra wheel cost for my turbo trainer so I can easily switch from biking indoors to outdoors? If I have just one wheel and put the trainer tire on I'm not going to want to swap tires on nicer days so it would prevent e from biking outside on nicer winter days.

I'm in Canada and am still biking at near freezing temperatures and it's not as bad as I expected, I normally stop biking when it gets this cold. To think just over a month ago I was out in a tank top at night.

Luckily as I said above I just got a turbo trainer so I can keep biking indoors once there's snow and ice or it gets too cold.

I got one (alexrims) for about $75CAD from my LBS. It was also available with an indoor trainer tire for about $120. You should be able to find something by googling 'indoor trainer wheel'. MEC sells alexrims too.

Had the Ryders "seventh" sunglasses saved on my wish list on Amazon forever. Normally $49.99 for the non polarized ones yesterday they had suddenly dropped to $20.91+ shipping. Fuark! I scooped them up immediately. Price already back to $49.99 now. Can't wait to get em and ride em.

I really must put that on my life: list of adventures. The next time I'm in a cold climate in winter (never), I'll set something up.

In the meantime, I'll have to resolve to experiencing that sensation vicariously through you and other intrepid Canadians.

I got the proper tire for my Tacx trainer but now that I try to install it it seems my bicycle tubes are suddenly much too long and there's no way I can fit the tube in the tire without it become completely bunched up.

The new tire is 1.25" wide while my tubes are for 1.5-1.75" tires, is this really what's causing the tube to seem too long (it's like I'm trying to fit a 30" tube in a 26" tire)?

This sucks as I now need to go back to the regular tire or not bike until I get a new tube tomorrow.

a trainer tire is just a super cheap, completely slick tire that you don't mind wearing out. If it *isn't* super cheap, then it is definitely a gimmick and defeats the whole purpose

You mean I can't just zip tie it on and connect the cables? Chit.

srs though, this is a project I'll be chipping away at slowly but surely to have the bike ready for next season. What you see pictured is obvi just the FD and RD, which I caught on sale for around $300 from Competitive Cyclist. I went with the "old" 6870-series parts because they were on sale (ok I think I saved like 40 bucks lol) and TBH I don't really care for the kinda-radical, sharp lined look of the new Dura-Ace and Ultegra products.

The new (8000-series) Ultegra-branded shifters should be available within the next few weeks, the pair should be around $500. Di2 battery is $120, $60 for an 11-25 cassette (has an 11-32 now), and roughly another $150 or so for Di2 junction boxes and wiring, all in it should be around $1100 for just the Di2 upgrade.

And then comes the new wheels, bigger rotors, ENVE everything, and to top it all off, a carbon DZero.
What bike is all this going on?
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

She came stock with 11-speed Ultegra mechanical and I've wanted to put Di2 on 'er since... well since ever, but I was holding out hoping that Shimano would eventually introduce an actual Ultegra-branded set of Di2 shifters that work with hydraulic discs... and now they (finally) have...
