But how will they understand religion if they don't go to church? Religion is as much for the community and fellowship as the philosophy.

Religion(s), and that always helps. Satanism is technically a religion. Not the right deity to look up to.

A follower is going to look at the deity/sage/leader of that religion as an ideal to look up. There are certain religious leaders teachings that fit into societal norms of what constitutes moral or ethical behavior. There are others that do not.

Start your own religion. Father would be appeased that your children now have a religion, problem solved.

Well if you are going to sit home and sneer about your kids going to church then your attitude will likely rub off on them unless they go with some friends and have some support. You act as if going to church will have some irreversible effect on them. The reality is kids can turn on religion in an instant if they don't like it. It takes a lot of effort to maintain ones faith and the be disciplined enough to attend church and live as a Christian.

It's going to take some effort for you kids to fit in wherever they decide to go. Church isn't a perfect place as it is filled with imperfect people but it can be a positive experience if approached a certain way IMO. If you are going to let them go ask your father to take them or let them go with some friends you trust.

My grandfather was non-religious and religion caused him some grief growing up when one of his kids joined a religion that made that kid believe my grandpa was going to hell unless he converted. lol. However, his other kids joined other churches which made them far less confrontational and less judgmental than the other. Hopefully you know enough about Christianity to guide your kids into letting them make their own decisions as they grow older and not take too much offense if they become over zealous.

Why again can't this be accomplished outside of religion? Also, what evidence is there exactly that this is accomplished through faith? When I look at the USA, one of the most religious industrialized nations on the planet, I see a civilization enamored with sex, bread, and the circus. Where are the fortifying effects of Christian doctrine to be found?

Stick to your guns man. Every supposed benefit of religious teaching you can instill just as effectively if not more so from an atheist perspective, without all the added nonsensical mythology and baggage that comes with subscribing to religion. Even spirituality can be engaged in completely absent of organised religion.

There is a huge difference between teaching children about religion, as it is a huge part of human history, and shoehorning them into a following a particular religion at a young age. Don't concern yourself too much with what your parents say, you're a grown ass man and they will come around to respect your point of view in time.

one doesn't need to go to church to be religious, but one does need an enlightened 'guru' to teach them.

too many western churchgoers are the "blind being led by the blind".

Yes let your children follow God the guy that had his only son brutally tortured and killed definitely sounds like a quality belief system to raise your kids on. I have kids but no church, they can decide on their own when they're old enough; for me it's a way to control the masses and give them a sense of hope/coping mechanism for the only guarantee in life which is death.

So you're opposed to Christianity, but you wish to raise your children on the Golden Rule which was penned by Jesus Christ himself? Ironic.

    he is right doe.

he is trying to save your soul and of his grand children.

he regretted he hasn't showed you/taught you enough about God, now he sees how you've been brainwashed by media/culture and is losing your path from God. He is afraid for you and for your children. Don't mock the old man for looking out for you.

he has your best interest and your family in his heart.

Obviously there are positive teachings that come along with religion but a major factor that you should consider, and that at least one other poster touched on, is the community aspect. Your children will meet a lot of good people at church, people with good values. They are good people to know and good connections to have for everything from business to marriage.

Why does he need to "man-up?" Silly goober, u do not need to adhere to a religion to be a decent person. Follow the golden rule, be a decent person, treat people with respect, etc. It is not ****in rocket science. Ur mentality is so flawed it is laughable lol.

Go to church nowadays and they only talk about jesus and the cross, like that was the only part of the bible that counts for anything. no teachings or parables and god help you if you want to hear about how a real god runs the show in the old testament.

Church clearly has changed since back in the day when men actually wanted to go, real men, not pansies.

I would love to be able to find a mans church where they talk about cool stuff like smiting people and war and such but i dont think they exist. Maybe non christian churches but dont know.
Since when was war "cool stuff?" U sound like a dumbass idiot lmao.

Who said there was ever ONE GOD? There could be more than that. Or zero for that matter. His old man may be trying to brainwash him (not very likely but still something to consider).

Again, the Golden Rule is a religious concept taken from Christianity. Morality is nonexistent outside of religion's influence because otherwise decency is left to the individual's discretion.

I meant that one does not have to be a consistent church goer or read the bible every day in order to be a decent person.

Nonsense. For the majority of America's history, society's values coincided with Christianity (for the most part) hence our reverence of the Golden Rule that you atheists are so ironically fond of. If the current generation abandons the Bible's teachings, future generations will likewise forget and do unto their neighbors as they see fit instead of leaning upon empathy.

I disagree with u babe. First off, never assume anything about someone. I consider myself agnostic, not atheist. Some stories/things in the Bible are/could be historically accurate while other stories could be completely made up. Many stories in the Bible are like Aesop's Fables in the sense that they were written to teach us a lesson that we could apply in our daily lives. The bible's teachings are merely guidelines on how to be a decent person, not kill, lie, cheat, etc. One does not have to be that religious to understand that. It is pretty basic stuff. If u need to rely on an old ass book to be a good person, then u got issues. Also just cause one is "super religious" does not mean that he or she is a good person. Many people have used religion in order to justify horrible acts or do terrible **** in the name of God.

At the end of the day, as long as u are a decent person who treats others with respect and is not a complete jackass, it does not matter what religion u choose to follow or if u choose to not be a religious/spiritual person.
