    Hey Eric
Since I obviously can’t figure out how to post pics here, go to drdarden.com forum, pics are in a post titled “Recent trip to Dynabody”.

I can still make an order of XP Luxe, but not for much longer.

I have lots of videos to share next week from my visits with DAS GYM, Gym80, and Panatta. Looking forward to order some machines. The No BS line was a bit of a disappointment. I did like some Gym80 machines and quite a few of the new Panatta.

Hi Chris, a bit of an off the wall question, as you've recently visited Panatta, what's the best all round stack shoulder press, stack chest press and stack row machines currently in the Panatta line up?.

I just got back. Lots of videos and machines to discuss.

    In summary:

    1) First stop was Vienna to DAS GYM. Met the 2 brothers, very nice people and truly amazing gym. Hard to believe the level of detail they have in that gym for professional athletes... a truly pro gym. They also have dumbbells up to 120 Kg (264.5 lbs). Anyone living close enough to DAS GYM is very lucky. Many people fly in to train for months.

    - I spent a whole day at DAS gym and spent most of my time on the No Bull**** Machines. At the time I didn't understand that the NO BS line were modified GYM80 machines that had already existed. I thought the NO BS line was something the brothers had come up with completely original. While I thought the machines were better than 90% of other machines, there weren't any I wanted to purchase. I thought for sure I would want at least the shoulder and maybe one of the chest machines, but that wasn't the case.

First off, even with foot levers, I hit the stops too soon: there should have been more pre-stretch. The range of motion should have been better, especially for machines that have foot levers. Secondly, the biomechanics and motion path were good, but not nearly as good as the Panatta for example. Third, the lever arms were very heavy from the load drop mechanism. They have been trying to fix the wildly varying strength curve and inertia of the lever arms with massive counterweights (which makes the machines look impressive), however, the strength curve just feels off. The only way you can make the strength curve more acceptable is to keep the weight horn in the 'load dropped' postion, closer to the pivot point.

When I went to Gym80 in Germany the next day, I then realized that the NO BS LINE were modified GYM80 machines. I tried the original GYM80 machines and preferred those over the No BS line. I really admire what the brothers tried to do, and admire their passion for equipment. We really think alike. I just think that the load drop mechanism is too hard to incorporate without unwanted tradeoffs. I can just tell you that there were not any pieces I wanted to buy. I'd say the Shoulder and Flat chest press were my 2 favorites, but I didn't like them enough to buy them.

The No BS Leg Press is a modified GYM80 LegPress, which uses the same base machine, but with mods. It just wasn't my style of leg press. Very ambitious and I'm sure better than 90% of other leg presses, but nothing I wanted to bring home.

    2) Gym80. Had a really great visit there. Very impressive Quality of machines. Love the Dual Rod seat adjustments and everything about their high quality. Truly amazing quality. I hear that they have a plant in China as well, and unfortunately stopped telling customers if their product was coming from Gelsenkirchen Germany or the China Plant. I'll try to clarify that now that I know them. I have quite a few videos of their machines. Many of the machines are undergoing revisions in their biomechanics, but they are resistant to making changes because of costs. Their new main product developer from Spain is amazing, but I don't think Gym80 is going to let him make all the changes that need to be made. I wish they would. Is there anything that impressed my enough to want to buy? Maybe. A few of their products are very good, but nothing at the moment that was a must have.

    3) Panatta. Spent 3 solid days working out on all the new machines that came out. I'd say there are at least 6 I will be getting.

Lots to talk about. I plan to place an order towards the end of this year, after I figure out the construction loan and architect itinerary. I need to get the construction loan finalized before I place an order with Panatta. I'd say sometime in November I'd like to place an order. Hopefully we can get about 16-18 machines and fill a 40 ft container for max savings. I know I'm in for about 6 pieces. I need to go over that this week. I'll post some videos sometime this week.

Very cool, Chris. I've watched all the videos, it's very appreciated.

Looking at the NoBull machines it seems to me that all the multi-dimensional adjustments and crazy over-build may be attractive only to a high level pro gym. In home use where the machines are setup for one (or very few) person it would be beyond redundant.

Some Gym80 stuff is very interesting. I browsed their catalog before, but videos show it much better.
    I'm bookmarking this piece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zyxot-wXXV0

Panatta is glossy as ever. For me it's like watching MTV Cribs.
They have so many cool rowing machines now.
This Lat PullDown is so good. I'd ditch my Lat Tower for this in a heartbeat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otOrF9c3cuQ

Do you find much difference in general between the Panatta's plate-loaded and stacked versions of one machine

Do you use that much stretch in your regular workouts, or is it just to demonstrate the machine?

    Chris,

As per usual, we can count on you to give a thorough account of your trips to Europe to investigate and test out new technology in the muscle building machine field. You always do an excellent job. (Nice videos, by the way, except some of them have come to me 'sideways' and I don't know how to correct it.)

Its a small world; the Purzel brothers (Alexander and Andreas) just visited me in southern California just 1 month ago. They are the owners of DAS GYM and the NO BULL**** line of machines. I can concur with you that they are both nice friendly individuals and are driven to expand the envelope of what is available in muscle building machines, and the members of DAS GYM are lucky to have them as owners.

There may be some merit in quickly dropping the effective load at the machines handgrips through shifting the center of mass of the loaded weights, to give the operator of the machine multiple bouts of muscular failure in the same set. But since their 'load drop mechanism' requires that an operator remove his hands from the handgrips in order to actuate it, one must ask if it is just as efficient to have a training partner remove weights during a set (i.e. 'drop down set').

I, of course, viewed all of your videos. It was interesting to me hearing Arturo Garcia Lopez explain the use of a four-bar linkage on the GYM 80 leg extension machine in your video in order to 'flatten out' the force profile on such a machine. The 'utility patent' (not a worthless 'design' patent for those who understand the difference) for the use of a combination four-bar linkage/rotating weight arm on a leg extension machine was granted to some guy named Henry Maag by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office back in April of 1989 (https://patents.google.com/patent/US4838548A/en), and has been copied by many manufacturers since then. He is not completely correct in implying that the weight arm alone dictates the force output of the machine. Actually, the orientations of the effort arm, weight arm, and the connecting link joining them throughout the movement have a far greater effect on the machine's actual force output profile than just the rotating weight arm acting alone (especially the weight arm shown in the videos which rotates through a relatively small arc).

Agreed. You would need to calculate the sum changes of effort and resistance at different points in the range of motion at each linkage. Linkages are great, I think you had/have some great ideas Henry.

I am not sure we ever should have gotten so worked up over matching a person’s strength through a range of motion with a resistance through a range of motion given we could only ever get it heading in the right direction, fatigue and other factors negate the match pretty quick. I think it’s a nice option but... certainly there is value in variation.

The effects of rotational inertia can also be mitigated by simply slowing down rep speed.

It is nice to see companies exploring more options.

Its really not a matter of "over-build" or "Pro Gym"... The only thing they did was add the load drop mechanism to those existing Gym80 machines. The problem is multiple. The bio-mechanics and motion path weren't that great and seemed to be further compromised by the addition of the load drop mechanism. Additionally, there wasn't enough prestretch, which was very disappointing with a machine using foot levers. Also, the load drop mechanism made the lever arms very heavy which threw off the strength curve. There was a ton of inertia, which just shows that the strength curve is way off. They tried to use counterbalances to offset the inertia and fix the strength curve, but unfortunately, the strength curve just feels off. Like I said earlier, I preferred the original gym80 machines. What the brothers tried to do is extremely admirable, but the load drop mechanism seemed to cause more problems than it solved. Like you said, I'd rather just have someone pull the plates off and do drop sets. Further, I just don't think the base machines were that great--they were nowhere near as good as the Panatta.

ome Gym80 stuff is very interesting. I browsed their catalog before, but videos show it much better. I'm bookmarking this piece: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zyxot-wXXV0

Yes the Gym80 plate loaded dip machine was decent. I like the high quality of it. I wasn't blown away though by any means.

Yes, I'm getting a bunch of their new machines, including that pulldown. I was suprised how much I liked that pulldown. I'm goign to look into having them build me a taller version and with a heavy weight stack. The XP Lux pulldown I got last order is by far the most amazing lat pulldown I have ever experienced. This pulldown is just different and offers something different that is great as well.

Do you find much difference in general between the Panatta's plate-loaded and stacked versions of one machine
It depends on the machine, but usually yes. This is with most manufacturers and machines. If you think about it, look at the MedX Avenger and MedX Selectorized machines for example... Rarely would you find the plate loaded version and selectorized version equivalent.

Do you use that much stretch in your regular workouts, or is it just to demonstrate the machine?
Depends, but yes. I like to mix it up as well.

Pair of snap ring pliers and a socket set, very simple to take apart.

You plan on buying the one in Reading for $900? I saw it on marketplace. Nice machine. Appears to be in great shape.

If anyone is interested, I just bought a lot of 12 vintage Nautilus machines. I only want 4 of them, so am giving the other 8 away to anyone who is willing to come to Bowling Green Ky to pick up. PM me for details.
