That's the thing - no. If I was rendering or mining, yeah. I went from an all core 1st gen R7 1700 @ 8/16 3.8GHz to a factory stock R9 3900x and this chip chews up literally anything I've ever done to it. Snappy as fuk, boosts to 4.6 with no OC. Massive improvement over the old chip that already had a fukton of cores/threads. I'm sure the 9900k is the same way.

Can confirm..at least with the 2080ti overclocked and the i9-9990k at 5.0ghz all core. RDR2 was closest thing to dropping below 60 (edit: it’s been a minute but now I’m thinking it may have dropped below 60 depending on the scene. Might have to boot it up again) I’ve tried and I spent almost no time in the menu, and I believe they patched it afterwards. . Could be wrong though. Played it on Xbox for real, just bought when I built the computer to see how it looked lol.
Everything else clearing 60 easily 4k ultra.. but as I mentioned haven’t played anything from 2020 on it.
What new games really crush GPUs these days? Maybe I’ll get like 25 frames on crysis remastered later on lolLast edited by Elvis.Costello; 04-30-2020 at 06:58 PM.

So I'm this close to pulling the trigger on a new rig but I am admittedly out of the loop, so any advice on the following would be appreciated.
-I am using the now 10 year old x58 rig I built. It has a full on hand made water cooling loop for the cpu, but I plan on getting a corsair all in one cooler for the new one. Now as far as I can tell, a single, more powerful graphics card is the way to go. Am I making a mistake by getting a high end micro-atx mobo instead of a full size one? I mean, you only need one full x16 pci-e slot (assuming you don't have other accessories) right?
-Intel Core i7-9700K. I like intel as it's what I built with 10 years ago but I have no idea if there are better (meaning, price/performance, not more expensive) options. This seems like the ideal, fairly future proof at 8 cores, overclockable cpu to get. Any others I should look at?
-I recently upgraded to a 3440x1440 monitor and my gtx970 is understandably not up to the challenge. I'm torn between getting a new gpu now so I can enjoy my quarantine, and waiting until nividias 3000 series releases, as all the games I plan on getting come out at the end of the year.
-Is there any advantage to more than 16gigs of RAM for gaming? I know graphics cards have a lot more these days, but is there any advantage to getting more for the system itself?
Thanks in advance.Last edited by Wazooty; 04-30-2020 at 08:15 PM.

TW3 isn’t too bad though IMO that’s the game I’m playing the most. 4k Max ultra everything including hairworks. Got the texture and lighting mods rolling. 70-85fps even in Novigrad. No drops below that due to effects or weather as far as I can tell. I think with hairworks off it never drops below 80 but I can test later.
And I’m a console guy so I can’t even barely tell the difference after 60fps lol. With HDR the display port caps at 97fps on a 4k signal. Think I’ll turn off hdr and play some doom at 120 this weekend to see if I can notice a difference. Prob have to use PC for a while for my pleb eyes to catch upSCC - Redskins - Wizards

^^Per our conversation earlier messed around a bit. With 4k max ultra if I turn off hairworks i get about 88-90 fps in Velen and 75-80 in Novigrad. If i'm not looking out to the horizon i get 97fps which is the max for the display port cable since i'm running 4k with hdr.
Edit: Actually been playing more this afternoon and its hanging above 90 a lot more of the time w/o hairworks.
Red Dead is a different story, as I mentioned i'm still at the beginning snowy part on PC because I haven't actually played it just wanted to see what it looks like. But if you 4k Ultra everything indiscriminately you get like 40fps lol. I turned 3 or 4 things like shadows and particles down to High and the framerate stabilized 60-65 fps even in the heavy snow. But yea its a much different beast compared to TW3 obv.
I have Shadow of the TR on xbox so dont want to double dip on PC with that one, but might pick up Metro Exodus at some point to see how that plays/looks.Last edited by Elvis.Costello; 05-02-2020 at 01:27 PM.

Yea should be cheap on GoG. I buy games there if they have them. GoG galaxy is really cool.
Edit: looks like it’s not cheap at the moment lol but goes on sale there all the time for obvious reasons.
They had a CDPR sale a little while back where you could get cyberpunk, all the Witchers, thronebreaker, Gwen etc for a crazy deal.SCC - Redskins - Wizards

Doing some product research with my morning coffee:
https://www.tftcentral.co.uk/article...fresh_rate.htm (they updated their guide on 1st May)
Actually excited that LG is getting into the 4K game, and here's a shortlist of 4K candidates I may get later this year depending on release, availability and QC:
LG 27GN950 (the reasonable option I think - no local dimming, but 4k 144Hz IPS DSC)
PG27UQX - mini LED again..let's see if it is even released
What monitors are the 4K crew here using? I'd be in the 27-30 market but in all honesty I'm really disappointed that monitor tech is taking so long compared to TVs - perhaps I'm wrong but this is what I'm seeing.

Personally there's no way I'd even entertain 4k unless I was going bigger than 34" widescreen. Just not a big enough screen to get enough extra out of the added pixel density IMO to justify the costs.
At 3440X1440 where I am now, there's simply not a big enough difference to go to 4K on a similar sized monitor.
I sit pretty close to my screen and I can see zero pixelation, etc at all. I'd imagine I would need a pretty damn huge jump in screen size for 4k to be worth it.
Just my opinion. Many claim they can tell a difference in 1440 vs 4k in the same size screen. I can't, not even side by side.

^^Asus ROG PG27UQ. Picked it up from microcenter for 1k even last year when I was building my first PC. I love it tbh but understand holding out for some better alternatives. There is noticeable backlight bleed, especially compared to my C9 OLED (obviously haha). I haven’t noticed it during actual games but when browsing etc it’s easy to see.
But yea I’m enjoying so far. Now that I think of it. Will it be compatible with the 3000 series cards in terms of being able to support a HDR signal at 4k at greater than 97hz? Not sure. Still learning. I know the C9 has hdmi 2.1 which canSCC - Redskins - Wizards

Any of you guys undervolt your GPUs for temp and fan noise reasons? I'm undervolting my RX580 because it reaches up to 85C and sounds like a jet engine whenever I'm playing demanding games, so I used MSI Afterburner to lower the voltages - and it seems stable so far, and I think it helped a bit with the fan noise (temps still can reach in the mid-80s though). I'm not sure if I should be touching anything else though (power level, temp level, etc.). Also wondering if I should be trying to do a bit of OC while I'm at it?
