A protein powder is not necessary all the time. I would personally have a shake if I needed to reach my protein requirements for the day. Personally when I am cutting I will try to consume as much whole foods as possible to keep myself feeling fuller for a longer period of time. If you are set on buying a powder I would look into:

It can be a convenient form of adding a fast digesting source of protein, combine this with a good nutritional program and training and you will benefit. NitroTech Whey Gold is awesome.

It's all about your overall diet and if you're meeting your caloric intake and macros for your goals. But i would say an isolate would be your best bet when cutting since it is low on calories.

Do you know how much protein you're getting now? If you're getting enough, then you don't need a protein powder. They're convenient if you need help reaching your macros, but you don't automatically need a shake because you're trying to lose fat.
    You can't help the hopeless.

Any protein powder you can fit into your daily calorie intake and stay in a calorie deficit will work. Protein powder is just powdered food to help you reach your daily protein intake goals. Here's some of my favorites:
    BPI Whey-HD
    AI Sport Whey
    Cutler Total Protein
    PES Select
    Controlled Labs Promore
Progressive overload + progressive eating = gains. Simple as that!

What he said. Also, whey protein is not a meal replacement shake. It is devoid of virtually every other macro and micro nutrient the body should receive in a meal or meal replacement shake.

Whey is great stuff to help meet your protein goals, and it's especially great after a workout because it gets absorbed into the body so quickly at a time when your body is starving for nutrients.

    TL;DR
Feel free to use whey, just don't expect it to adequately satisfy hunger pangs.
