As someone who goes to a target school for wall street and will most likely end up in IB/Consulting, even the high IQ boyos fail to beat the market year after year. Index funds consistently perform better than almost all mutual funds in the long run (with a few exceptions like the boyo Warren Buffet).

Goes to show that they can't even predict what the correct moves are.

Risk will be way higher though. Few professionals outperform the market because they hold lots of different stocks to reduce risk, and they also restrict their holdings to more popular stocks. People like OP don't do this so they can get bigger gains, but also bigger losses.

it could peak higher but there's 0% chance of it going on a neverending run. it's gone so high recently that probability shows when it will dip or even crash again it's going to back lower than what it is right now. when you invest in an index fund you expect a certain steady return. that's not going to happen unless you invest after a recent dip. for example if you invested near the peak of the dot com bubble around 2000, you would've had to have waited 11 years just to begin getting a return. there is no guarantee just because it's an index fund. but if you invested after one of the crashes, don't even have to go near predicting the absolute bottom but just after it crashes, you get extremely good returns.

You failed to mention the massive amounts of real time proprietary data that they have access to. No ordinary trader can make anywhere near as informed decisions as they can.

But.. cellular will boom with 5g and home/office Internet replacing in ground stuff from Comcast, century link etc.

Senior Living is a good industry to watch also, lots of money in it and lots of baby boomers ready for it. The big players haven't done well lately though.

it's a lot different managing a 100k p.a. with very high tolerance for volatility and a 100M portfolio with <15% target volatility

It's actually not all that hard to beat an index during a bull market. Do it consistently over several years, including a bear market, and then come back and post your results.

If you somehow still managed to beat the market, congratulations, you're officially the best investor on the planet. I look forward to hearing about you on the next list of billionaires.

Getting in when markets at all time high lol...

Timing the markets is even worse though

Maybe start investing $1k a month into an index. Get something with as low fees as possible.

Markets trade within 5% of an all time high about 75% of the time.

Laughing at someone who buys in near an all time high is a market timing fallacy.

You even said it yourself; time in the market > timing the market

Better off investing that 10k into some quality lube and doing the tried and trusted G4P route. Stock markets are too volatile right now
