Hello, I was curious to see what my bodyfat is before and now.

    5ft 9inches @ 166lbs
Skinny fat and currently in a cut@ 2100 cals a day.

    Pictures in BodySpace.
Left pic is June 9th and right pic is current Aug 23rd.

Why does my front shot look almost the same? I don’t see any difference. Side, yes I see some difference. Am I doing something wrong?

    Thank you!!

It's because you are at a BF%-range where visceral fat burn is prioritized by your body. So visually you'll look smaller from the side. I do see a difference in muscle size and a bit in definition, it's what I would expect for a ~2 month period though, so all good.

    From ~24%BF to ~22%BF.

Yes. About a 3%-drop in BF it seems.

    So from 28%BF to 25%BF.

I'd say keep progressing overall. Doing more for certain bodyparts is unneccessary and can be counterproductive for overall growth, which is key at this stage. Fat as such can't really be targeted, but I think you know that :-)

25%? You told me 17% last time I posted (shown below). Hopefully the light in the above picture is throwing you off...

    Hi,

    I'm 5'8, 38, 153.8 lbs.

I posted my before and afters in my profile. The before was 12 weeks ago, at 164.8 lbs.

I'd like to know my estimated body fat for both my before and after, as I had two Dexa scans that I feel are inaccurate.

I’m thinking about a dexa scan. Would you recommend (assuming you can get comfortable that the results are correct)? Did it give you a lot of insights?

BTW - I would estimate your BF%, but I’m horrible at it.

I'm actually asking because I think the Dexa scan is wrong. I lost 11 pounds and it says I lost 5 pounds of muscle, which I strongly doubt. It said I only lost 1.8% bf from my before to my after, which I also don't buy. Though I suppose it could be accurate. I'll leave the estimator experts on here to make a determination.

My gut says the scan is off by at least 3-5%.

From what I’ve read on here, losing 5lbs of muscle from an 11lbs total weight loss sounds about right. I guess we will see...

It'd imply that I got weaker. If you look at my body in the photos, I did not lose much muscle, if any. I also can lift far more now than I did at the beginning, which again, indicates muscle mass. Five pounds of muscle loss is pretty crazy, and especially unlikely at a 500 cal/day deficit.

So here's my predicament. I had a Dexa scan 12 weeks ago, and it said I was 29.4% bf, which is pretty darn close to you guess. I re-measured today, and it came back at 27.6%. I lost 11 pounds @ a 500/cal deficit per day. I find it hard to believe I only lost 1.8% from the before to the after. For that result to be correct, it means I lost 5 pounds of muscle, but I got stronger and I don't see much, if any, muscle loss. But Dexa scans are supposed to be accurate.

Do you think there's any chance that I'm 27.6% bf in the after photo?

How accurate is Dexa supposed to be? Will you post a picture of the reports? I do this type of stuff as a profession and often these reports will imply a margin of estimation error. If that margin is 0.5%, then you could have moved from 30.0% to 27.0% and still gotten the results above. If the margin of error is greater, even more so.

Do you think there's any chance that I'm 27.6% bf in the after photo?
No, I think it's highly unlikely that you are 27%BF... then again I'm just doing visual estimates by pics and I do get it wrong every now and then.

Still no, I wouldn't trust a simple dexa for BF%... maybe if it's done together with other specified tests as in a multi-compartment model.

According to the testing place, it's accurate to .1 percent, but I couldn't find one place online to corroborate that. While it was the same company scanning, it was two different scanners used. First test was in an office. Second was in their mobile unit. First test they made me change into a gown. Second they let me keep all my clothes on, including my shorts.

I have posted my Dexa scan in my profile. It doesn't indicate that there's a margin of error. But I still doubt 27%+.

If that margin is 0.5%, then you could have moved from 30.0% to 27.0% and still gotten the results above. If the margin of error is greater, even more so.

With my little knowledge of science and expiremnting, the variables you mentioned above (different equipment, clothes on/off) are enough for me to throw the second reading out the window. I would ask for a refund or a RE-test on the original equipment they tested you from. Let’s say the first one was off by 5%, then the second one will be off by 5% also. (So you keep you bases and variables the same except one. In this case, the variable that changed should only be your body fat and everything else should be kept as constant as possible)

I’ve recently learnt that most of the times you gotta put your foot down and ask for what you want and they’ll give it to you...I mean, don’t go crazy but insist that you want to get retested and that you should not have to pay because the results are obviously flawed. Print the pics or show them the pics to make your point.

As far as I can see, what tucane is estimating in terms of before and after fat %ages make total sense and are probably closer to truth than the DEXA scans.

You can look at my galley pics and compare tucane’s estimates and to your pics and his estimates for you. Then look for “body fat percentage pictures” google search results and make up your mind. Keep in mind amount of muscle can make a certain fat percentage (eg. 20%) look completely different and in different people.

I agree with this and agree that the second test result doesn’t seem correct. The first test seems to jive with your pictures. Given the first was also in an office with a more official procedure, I would trust those results. The second test doesn’t seem to produce results that pass the sniff test given your comments about getting stronger and the procedure you described. I would also ask for a retest in the office; or at least go to the office from now on.

I also didn’t see anything in the papers that talked about the accuracy of the results. The fact that this information is not in writing anywhere and only communicated verbally may be by design so that can’t be held accountable. However, if you do another office visit and those results make sense, you can probably just chalk it up to a faulty mobile machine.

I’m not good at estimating bf%, but the estimates given by those in this trend seem to be pretty accurate more often than not (more so than a DEAX scan it would seem...)

Just curious, how much did you pay for the mobile unit test? Was it the same as the office visit?

I contacted the Dexa scan company and they went back and reviewed all the scans for the day. They came to the conclusion that everything was measured accurately.

They also said that the margin of error is +/-1%. That's according to the manufacturer, which I believe is GE.

So I guess I only lost 1.8% body fat after 12 weeks and 11 pounds lost, but that just seems nuts to me.
