If you guys could get me an estimate that would be great, I’m getting a serious belly, especially when I’m relaxed. I was eating too much of a surplus for the first two months so now I’m at a high body fat percent. I’m 18 yrs, 5’6 and 143 pounds. I’m making gains in strength and size but like I said I’ve only just started with only two months of bulking/working out. So now I have no idea if I should keep bulking or cut or eat at a mantience.

Somewhere around 25%BF.
Even though your bodyfat is higher, you shouldn't cut due to your young age and your hormonal state which is primed for muscle building.
Lift at maintenace with higher protein and higher amounts of activity, aim to stall in bodyweight while improving in lifts, this way you'll profit from improving on your physique without getting fatter.
You can essentially keep your current diet, swap some stuff for protein and just up your activity level to balance it out.~ Feel free to PM me if you have any questions ~

late follow-up question for anyone to answer:
- been bulking for 1½ months after reaching "16-17%"
- probably sitting at 18% now
- planning to go on for another 1½ months, hopefully staying under 20%
my mid term goal is to reach ~15% bf, but i hate those "long" 3 month cuts. can i just lean bulk for 3 months, cut for 1½, rinse and repeat? how long would it approximately take me to reach 15% bf this way? any kind of feedback is appreciated

Posted several months back and got estimated at 14-16%. I'm thinking now that estimate was low, I have been dropping weight pretty consistently since and have only lost about ~5% off my lifts.
I'm thinking that now I might be more in the 14-16% range? Sorry for straight on lighting, best that I have right now.
Thanks in advance

What you can do after reaching ~20%BF or your upper comfort level... is running a 1000 deficit for as long as it takes to get to 15%BF. This way you'll get away with an even shorter cut.
But yeah, your proposition of a 300 surplus for 3 months, should take around 2 months of a 500 deficit to even out.~ Feel free to PM me if you have any questions ~

i thought 1000 was for overweight people - do you think it's safe for me without sacrificing too much muscle? i'll consider that deficit for a 1 month "mini cut" though, does that sound good?
assuming everything i gain is fat, yes. i guess my question is this: can i expect to lose about 2% bf per cycle (3 months lean bulk, 1 month cut on a 1000 kcal deficit)? assuming it works, i'd be 14-15% in a year while adding muscle during my short-ish bulks.
if it helps, i'm 5'7 and 157 pounds. i'm not asking for exact numbers, just some rough estimates as always. not trying to overcomplicate this, i just simply hate cutting for months at a time. thanks

A 1000 deficit with adequate lifting is likely to be safe all the way to 12%BF, so to 15%BF i see no problems. The only time I've ever noticed any kind of "muscle loss" is below 10%BF... and I've done even bigger deficits back in the days.
Yeah for each bulk/cut-cycle your BF% should drop by maybe 1-2%... assuming you hit roughly the same state each time except for fat&muscle, the math is really complex. Tried to program a calculator for it once, but there are way too many variables.~ Feel free to PM me if you have any questions ~

Cutting at the moment in prep for a long bulk.
156lbs 5 foot 8 at the moment, scale is measuring my body fat wildly differently by like 5 or 6% so was wondering what you all thought.
I have varied up the lighting, pump and whether I am flexing for the pics (2nd pic is worst lighting, no pump, no flex). All pics taken over the last week.
Didn't bother with back or leg shots but to give you an idea I would say my back probably leans out before my front, my legs are average.
Hoping to get to like 12% body fat so that I can bulk for like 10 months and not get too fat.

Sorry but not yet, in around 14%BF... You have vascularity in the upper region, so that's good. But you seem to hold a combination of water and fat in the lower area.
Might have something to do with dietary stress and your hormones at this point.
For how long have you been cutting?Last edited by Tucane; 07-16-2019 at 07:55 AM.

5'7, 157 lbs. last time i posted a pic that was taken june 1st, right after my cut with the best possible lighting and angle, got estimated at 16-17%. am i still close to that or what? (pics attached)
additional question:
earlier i made a small progress thread asking for feedback - only got a few "vague" replies. lately i've been wondering if my bf% is too high so i can't see any muscles/definition, or if something is wrong. bulked for 6 months (learned the basics + form etc), cut for 3 months, now bulked for about a month. i have a plan for cutting later, but atm i just need someone to check if i'm doing fine...
thanks in advanceLast edited by faithbrah; 07-16-2019 at 10:57 AM.

Thanks for the input. I’ve always held all my fat disproportionately around my belly button and love handles like most men.
I started mid April so it’s been 3 months. I started the deficit relatively light, just about 500, then began ramping up as the progress was fading. I am currently taking a week off from dieting cuz I was feeling insanely hungry all the time and weak.
I actually began wondering if I just have such poorly developed abs and general muscle that even at 10% I wouldn’t have abs since the same bodyfat percentage looks different on different people.
So you think I’d need to get down about 140 to get to 10%?Last edited by GhenghisKhan; 07-16-2019 at 11:04 AM.

Looks to be 17-18%BF.
I don't see anything wrong. It's quite common to not have much definition where you're at in terms of muscle development and bodyfat. Just keep grinding and really give it all you got in the gym and you'll get results with time. Lifting progress is key as always.~ Feel free to PM me if you have any questions ~

Good that you chose a diet break... was about to recommend one^^
Might be the case that you haven't developed your abs enough for them to show this cut, unless you cut down to unhealthy levels.
In your case I'd consider shifting gears at 12%BF, going lower might not be worth the struggle.~ Feel free to PM me if you have any questions ~
