    pull ups sets and reps

if the workout im on calls for 3 sets of 8 for most exercises and i can only get 3 reps per set on pull ups, should i stay at 3 sets or maybe do 8 sets of 3 to get the reps in? or would that be overkill? all comments appreciated.

I'd do your 3 reps and then finish off the set with band-assisted pull-ups. It wouldn't be overkill to do 8x3 since your volume would be the exact same.

In addition to band-assisted pullups, you can also do negative reps to finish out your sets. Jump up to the bar and use your momentum to pull yourself to the top position, then slowly lower yourself to a dead hang. Drop off the bar, and repeat. I would alternate between band-assisted and negatives.. maybe a month doing band-assisted, then a month doing negatives.

As said, negatives and band-assisted pull ups will help you. Also good form is key, to me it makes no sense to do some crappy pull ups to get to those 8. Do as many reps as possible as long as you can keep proper form. Then rest and repeat.

I'm partial to the assisted pullup machine in situations like this, where you need to up the assistance in order to complete the set down to the last rep of it. I like bands too, but it's easier to track your exact assistance weight with the machine. With bands the assistance changes depending on how far apart it's stretched, so it's weird to progress with them on pullups. I like the negatives method, I used to walk off a chair or hop up to the bar and lower myself down slow for the sets.
