I think I fell for a scam (out $1000)

So I have been desperate for a job for months now. But I had been unable to find one. Then I saw an ad at some site for a secret shopper. I clicked on it and filled out the application. I got a response saying I was hired within a day or so. Awesome! Or so I thought.

So in the acceptance email, they told me that they they were going to send me a cashier's check. Which would include the money I was was to spend secret shopping, and the money I was to be be paid for it. I am to notify them when I get it and when it clears.

Two days later, I get the check via priority mail. It was from some local credit union and looked legit and my bank made the entire amount available right away. Anyway, I notify them via email and they tell me that they made a mistake.

They say the check was for $1000 more than it should have been. And that I had to give it back to them or otherwise I wouldn't get the job and they would call the police. And so I sent them the $1000.

And after that, I didn't hear a word from them. And soon, I realized from checking my account that the check had bounced (well it surely wasn't a real check to begin with).

It looks like I am out $1000. And my checking account is -$550.

I tried calling my bank and trying to get them to reverse it. I told them it was their fault for accepting a fake check before verifying it. They basically told me the same. And that there is no way that they will budge.

Halp. Is there anything I can do?

Should I call the police? I'm not sure they will care and even if they do they probably won't be able to do anything. Surely all the info I have on them is fake.

Sadly, it won't do much.
The money is as good as gone.

Police report will raise awareness for consumers and the banks etc, but not recover OPs funds.

LOL, my parents are hard core Christians. I would be much better off telling them I got scammed than what you suggest.

Yeah. Though I suppose that people who are gainfully employed would be less likely to fall for it.
