Lalane is an excellent role model. His eyebrow gains were OFF THE CHARTS!

Moderation is absolutely essential in all walks of life. What people fail to understand is that different foods and activity require different levels of moderation. Calorically Dense food requires more moderation because they lack the nutrients (as opposed to nutrient dense food). If you are bulking, you can allow yourself a bit more kcal dense food, but that depends on how much activity you do per day, your overall kcal expenditure and how many kcals you've had and will have.

Moderation also is key in exercise. High intensity exercise requires moderation as well. It's not healthy to HIIT in the gym for 2 hours then run 5 miles and repeat 4 times per week. Sure, there is probably SOME PEOPLE that can handle it, but i doubt you or I know anyone that can.

IMO, a well rounded lifestyle, is when you practice a little bit of everything. Some long distance running, some sprinting, some powerlifting, some traditional weightlifting/resistance training, maybe some crossfit, cycling, lap swimming, obstacle course running etc

hmmmm. Probably seated OHP. Cant do Military press anymore but i cant still throw up some heavy weight. I guess 2nd place would be barebell shrugs. I use to shrug 7 plates for 20-30 reps (pre-back surgery). How about you bro?

Tank I feel like I am about to visit snap city. lower back hurts fairly close to the pelvic area like C3 or C4. It isn't painful, but very sore even if I don't deadlift or squat for 4-5 days. It doesn't necessarily feel like a muscle pain so I am worried it might be a spinal thing. Is there any easy way to put my worries aside and rule out my concern about a spinal issue?

I think you mean L3/L4. C3/C4 is in the neck. Honest mistake. Do you have a video of your squat form? How much weight do you typically go with? What does your typical squat workout look like?

(Just to be sure) Are you SURE that your SPINE (i.e. your vertebrae/the bone) is what is sore and not soft tissue?

Yes. lmfao that is what I meant. I'm honestly not going too heavy @165 at most I usually do some reps at 185x10 225 x7 245x4. Form is decent, not usually feeling anything bad when squatting. Deadlifting I'm not going over 315 using conventional form. It could be soft tissue, but it is right in the middle. Perhaps it is soft tissue because it just feels tight particularly when I arch my back forward. Tight muscles surrounding perhaps?

My bad for forgetting to reply as the one originally asking about this uneven feet during the squat issue...I tend to get more and more uneven as I shuffle around during my set and the closer I am to maxing out.

Trying to keep my feet dead even just feels strange to me now.

I think I have narrowed it down to a tightness in my lower back/glutes on the left side, it pretty much twists my whole lower body slightly to the left.

Its all subjective. What works for me, may not work for you. My suggestion is to educate yourself on the different splits. See what is common among Mr O competitors vs Crossfitters vs Powerlifters and so on. Then make your own. Dont be afraid to mix things up for a bit either

Unhappy On muscular atrophy and memory

I've had surgery and spent a week in bed. In that week I suffered severe muscle atrophy and I'm depressed as hell, i literally feel like i lost 1 year of training, I'm incredibly weak and even getting out of bed is hard, I'm slowly trying to get back to my old habits.
My question is: I heard something about 'muscle memory' and how for people who used to work out it helps you get back to where you were before quickly, any hope for me?

A week in bed wont result in much atrophy at all. Atrophy usually only results THAT QUICKLY when you are paralyzed. The weakness however is from your body recovering from the stress of surgery. If you only missed a week, then it shouldnt take you more than 3 or 4 to get back where you were. Most people dont know this, but in the case of an injured limb (no idea what your surgery was but this is just a general statement) but if you can continue to train (obviously NOT the affected area), you'll lose less strength than if you took a hiatus. Its a psychological trick....more or less

Perhaps it is soft tissue because it just feels tight particularly when I arch my back forward. Tight muscles surrounding perhaps?
My bad bro. I'm pretty forgetful these days.

What is keeping you from doing a proper side raise? Pain? Injury? Hooked acromion?
for reference on what that is--->
    Spoiler!

Do your side raises like this:

When you lean to one side like this, you take the rotator cuff muscles out of the equation and you ISO the deltoids MUCH better

Tank, I'm thinking of getting a degree in Kinesiology but I'm bad at math, I got a C in statistics in junior college. How far up in math did you need to go to get your degree? Would you recommend becoming a personal trainer?

Personal training is only lucrative in large cities AND in times of economic growth. Right now could be a good time, but you dont need a degree for it. However, its REALLY hard to find any money in kinesiology. There just isnt a huge calling for it. The only math i had to do was College algebra and Elementary statistics. I had to take stats twice too, lol. And i only got a D the 2nd time. I always took around 18 hours because i had to take some classes in order (some were only offered in the fall and spring and one had to be taken before the other) and in the end, i had a few extra classes that made up for that low score. I fukking HATE math

I tried to respond last night, but my iPad was acting up and my message got canceled. I wanted to ask, why did you need to take college algebra and statistics? I thought you needed one or the other. I took college algebra and had to drop it, I was getting F's on every quiz and test, so I ended up taking statistics instead, and had a high D but the teacher was cool and bumped me up to a C.

Stats and Algebra were what was required when i started the Hk program back in the day. They HK curriculum was changed every few years for whatever reason and i could have chosen whatever specific curriculum that was rolled out AFTER I started the program but i stuck with the one that had the easiest math courses

Brah, I’ve tried taking stats twice and dropped both times. Tried taking algebra once and dropped it too.

Brb almost done with all major classes but still haven’t taken the basic math classes.

Online classes or summer semester JuCo? The ONLY way i got through stats was by doing my homework was:
-doing my homework soon as I could after class
-doing the optional homework (normally i wouldnt even think about wasting time pondering whether or not to do the optional stuff, but I struggled so fukking hard that I had to)

I only passed my Anatomical Kinesiology classes because I would go to my apartment after class/before work and re-write my notes out over and over and over. Since the class was 90% memorization (origin, insertion, action, innervation), this was the best way for me to study. When test day came, as soon as i got the test, i feverishly scribbled everything i had memorized down on the back of the test (which was usually about 20 muscles) and then i could basically breeze through the rest. My point is, you gotta find a way to pass.

Yeah man after this semester I’ll be a senior. Think ima try taking stats over the summer. Gonna take really good fukkin notes and come home and ACTUALLY study them and practice everything out. I hate math but I just gotta stop being a lazy fuk when it comes to it.

Algebra shouldn’t be too bad since that’s all we’re doing in my health related fitness assessment class.

For me, algebra was much easier. I could apply that easier. Stats was just too abstract for me. I am TERRIBLE with abstract concepts (which is why i barely skated by in psychology and human developement). You said it though...gotta nut up and be a man. Do what it takes to pass.

I was diagnosed with disc herniation (L4/L5 and L5/S1) one year ago, but I have had the issue for several years prior to that. I know that squats are usually the trigger for severe pain for me.

During good periods, I perform well. In others, the pain is demotivating and sometimes prevents me from doing any exercise that puts stress on my lower back. What exercises do you recommend? Right now I'm doing one-legged squats and regular deadlifts. I also do stretching, especially hamstrings. It doesn't get really bad, but during the last couple of weeks there has been constant aching (not debilitating). Is that a sign to STOP what I'm doing? In any case, I'd just like to know more.
