Cancer Fighters and Survivors Crew: (Re)Mission Accomplished

We are a group of patients, survivors, and caregivers who have been diagnosed with, are caring for, or are in remission/NED from cancer in all of its ugly forms. We do not offer medical advice but rather can only speak to what has worked for us. Always listen to your doctor and don't be dumb. If you're not sure if you should post, you should! We are nice, really.

I'll add to the OP as others join and offer suggestions. Feel free to suggest links, support groups, whatever. Only offer as much about your diagnosis and treatment plan as you feel comfortable doing.

In the South, we bake casseroles when people are hurting or sick and sad. This is a place for internet casseroles and hugs.

If you troll this thread, may God have mercy on your soul. Don't be rude, be helpful and kind, always.

Note: I won't be asking for proof of status because this is the internet and who cares? People lie all the time. Do your own research before accepting the advice of anyone ITT.

This thread is a good thing. Unfortunately, cancer knows no bounds and can strike anyone at any age regardless of how healthy they feel, how hard they workout or how clean they live life.

I'm happy to offer any insight anyone may need/want.

    Let's do this thing right!

You and your family have my best.

You offer a great perspective, too. Cancer doesn't just impact the patient but their family, as well.

Please don't hesitate to share anything you're comfortable with. You've seen things from a perspective I couldn't describe, understand.

Exactly. The lifestyle shaming is so old. No matter the reason, you've got a diagnosis so let's fight it together.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Father. Oncology is not an easy field, I can't even imagine. I'm glad you said hi, hope you stick around.

Also, I have a shoulder length, kinda cute brown bob-style wig if anyone needs/wants it, for themselves or a lady friend. I wore it a few times and just stuck with the 'ol high and tight. I can send pics via PM.

What type of cancer? Hope everything goes well.

My Dad had stomach cancer five years ago, made a full recovery. His semi annual CT scan turned up lung cancer a few months ago (unrelated to stomach which is good) and is treating that now. Really sucks to have it again but fortunate to have caught it so early. Without the stomach cancer it probably would've been a while before he started showing symptoms.

He'll get through it and so will you

I'm in remission; it was melanoma.

I'm so sorry about your Father but very thankful it was caught early, just as you said. I'll keep him (and your family) in my thoughts. Treatment is the worst but worth it when you have your life back again.

Cancer has been just that, a cancer, in my family the past decade. ive lost 3 aunts, my father, grandfather, and last christmas, a girl i dated and considered a great friend. i have a couple friends now going through the fight. it's hard. obviously for the person fighting but the person that sits at there bedside and reads to them. the person that has to help his father walk to the bathroom to bathe himself or use the restroom. to drive 1000 miles to see your aunt just one last time, knowing when you walk out of that house and start driving back...it will be the last time you get to hug them.

misc is great for this sortve thing. ive been able to raise nearly 5k through the misc for the american cancer society and the fight against breast cancer. this is a great place for that support, despite all the crazy ass brahs here.

    Real feels reading that.

It destroys relationships and families more than people even realize. Even when you're diagnosed, you can only be a caregiver for yourself. It's very difficult to maintain a relationship with someone when you're constantly nurturing and being a caretaker for yourself instead of your partner.

    *Internet casseroles/hugs your way*

Misc is crazy and insane and weird but we are still a family of bros (and some honorary ladybros) who care and support each other through the chit. That's a real family imo.

no joke about the relationship thing. I thought i met "the one" when i moved back to ohio to help care for my father who was terminally ill from his cancer. I spent a lot of restless nights working, trying to help care for him, help with my mom and nieces, and balance a relationship. in the end, it wasnt good enough. ****ty but it's the way it goes. people will always come and go. family is family. you take care of family.

I hate how true it is. When you've never been with someone through the death process, you don't really know the toil it takes on your entire world.

I'm sorry to hear about 'the one,' but she's clearly the one who wasn't right for you.

I'll just say to anyone experiencing this, get a second opinion if you receive any unfortunately news. when my wife was going through breast cancer, she was pregnant with our son at the time. we thought that if we hurry up and do treatment, hopefully her and our son will be good. unfortunately that wasn't the case. now looking back on it, it kills me that we never got a 2nd or 3rd opinion.

I wish all of you and your families the best of luck.

Didnt know we had this. Mine was thankfully just the thyroid. Diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer summer 2016. Had a thyroidectomy a month later. complete removal plus 7 nearby glands that were also cancerous. Radioactive Iodine was done in Nov and the scan was all clear. Just taking my daily thyroid hormone now. Living as healthy as possible. Leaned way down, but metabolism is good. on dat 29" waist time now. Age 27, I never would have thought it'd happen to me.

Good for you, way to change your life too, jeez. (I needed to hear that!) My mother had the same thing, takes synthyroid daily and is strong as heck, 62 years old doing P90x and yoga classes! I really do believe cancer makes us stronger.

So glad to hear all is well.

Nice to see this kind of thread here, as I guarantee almost anyone can relate and has been affected by cancer in one way or another. Stage 4 colon cancer here that has metastasized to my liver. First round of chemo has been ineffective and it has grown slightly on my liver but, has not spread anywhere else. The colon part of this is relatively basic and could be removed at any time. The liver is what is disheartening, as they cant/wont operate when the disease is over a certain size. Last Tuesday I went in for liver directed radiation, called radio embolization with theraspheres. Starting another round of chemo with a different drug in a little over a week too. Good luck out there everyone.
