Cancer survivor checking in. My wife and I both had it.

In spring of 2015 my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had a mastecomy with reconstruction and then chemo followed by radiation.

Later that summer I went for a routine colonoscopy since I had ulcerative ****tis. When the results came in, the doctor told me to come in. "Guess what? You have colon cancer" Yay. So while my wife was going through chemo I was researching surgeons and getting 2nd / 3rd opinions. I ended up needing to have my entire large intestine removed and now have an illeostomy. Fortunately the cancer was comfined to the colon so I didnt need chemo or radiation.

Now a year+ later we're both doing well and back to doing 99% of everything we did before

Why do you bake casseroles? Seems like an odd thing. When sad, I could think of a lot of other things I'd want to eat before that.

It's comfort food for a lot of Americans, particularly in the south.

You will too, just keep at it, stay positive, try different things. We here for you bro, maybe one day we can wear our radiation masks to a halloween party together lmao. hopefully they can figure out why your immune system keeps dropping, maybe consider another specialist.

I used herbal supplements during my treatment even though my oncologist advised against it, I dont suggest choosing one or another but consider all alternatives at the same time. Look into cannabis oil or phoenix tears, it helped with the pain because I did not take any nausea medicine or pain medication for surgery/chemo/radiation.
yea I think herbal and natural medicines are good ideas to take alongside traditional medicine.

    - Basically go for plant base protein over animal base. Not saying turn vegan, but maybe change your diet to 80% plant 20% meat.

    - Since I know this is BB most off you prob take some protein shake, Orgain Organic Plant Based Protein Powder is something t o look into

But again as I said in my post above, you can do everything right and still get this disease. Prob low chance but cancer doesn't discriminate

And the definition of it is anything cooked in the oven in one of those casserole dishes? So it could be Macaroni or chicken Alfredo or anything? If those two things are included in the category, I'd be down lol.

Coming up on the two year anniversary of me getting back in the gym after going through 6 months of chemo and surgeries. Still cancer free and making gains like crazy. Congrats to everyone who beat it and keep fighting to you guys going through it. I used to read (and post on) the misc a lot when I was in the hospital, it kept me entertained.

Yeah I remember desperately wanting to get back in the gym. It was such a ****ty feeling watching the (small) gains I had evaporate and my hair all fall out, but it was also a really humbling experience. I feel like I appreciate every leg day or every small gain more than I used to, if that makes sense.

Anyways, I had a rare form of cancer called a germ cell tumor in my chest. I had to go through 4 rounds of chemo (6 straight days in the hospital, 20 out) and then I had surgery to remove the tumor. They had to take out part of my lung with the tumor and left a chest tube in me.

That chest tube somehow caused infected fluid to build up in my right side and I had to go to the hospital for another surgery to remove the infection. I'd say that was the absolute lowest point for me. I had an anxiety attack in the hospital and I'm not the type of person to get attacks. Plus the pain of having sponges stuck into holes in my side wasn't very pleasant (they had to seal the infected holes with this suction machine).

I have a giant scar across my right pec (it's covered by my arm in my profile pic) and a few on the right side right underneath my pec. The good news is that once you get through it and start bulking back up, the scars look badass (in my opinion).

I'm out of reps for the day or I'd give you some. What type of cancer do you have?

    - Julyish, platelets dropped to 23,000, when I had cancer they dropped to 43,000, which is the lowest they had been. Well, 23,000 scared me so I got a cat scan and it was all clear.
    - Docs tried Dexamethasone, and it increased my platelets for a few weeks and they crashed back down.
    - Docs put me on Predinosone of 80 mg, it worked for a few weeks and they crashed back down.
    - Last week I felt something wrong, asked to get bloodwork done 3 days earlier than usual, and platelets were at 6,000. Anything below 10,000 is essentially critical.
    - Admitted to hospital, got IVIG plasma infusions with IV drip.
    - 3 days later docs expected my platelets to be around 35,000 or so... Just 9,000.
    - Got an IV drip of rituxan Friday, going Monday to get IVIG again, and then Rituxan again thursday. This will continue for the next 6-8 weeks.

Its depressing having to essentially go back to the "chemo" room, even though I dont have cancer.
Its hard to be strong when I have so many people depending on me.... I have my employees at work, my sister whos my business partner, my mom and dad who rely on me every month to help support them, my little nephew who is just 4 months old, and I want to be there for him, and of course my wife. She puts up with everything, I know she doesnt want this, she didnt sign up for it, it isnt fair to her.

When I say its all adding up its because I also have these issues.
    - Asthma out of no where. PFT last year had me at 99%, this year, 35%. My lungs are only blowing out 35% of estimated volume, meaning I am at COPD levels. No one knows why
    - Hypothyroidism, radiation killed my thyroid gland.
    - Skin issues. Doctors dont know what it is. Believe I have a connective tissue disorder like lupus but they arent sure really... My skin is just ripping if that even makes sense.

I have been to Mayo Clinic, seen about 20 doctors there literally, have seen 10 specialists in Atlanta too. No one really knows what the skin or asthma issues. I guess they understand the platelet issue, but now theyre also talking about removing my spleen. Its just a lot.
I would never ever do that, and I'm delighted by the boundaries we've all been able to keep.

She did sign up for this, though. She knew who she was marrying, for better/worse, sick/health.

Don't you think there's something about chemo that gives us these crazy side effects later on? I've heard of skin issues being really common but not what you're describing. For me it's been the seizures. Had I known that would happen I would have taken a different route in treatment, probably.

How are you today? Have you guys looked at seeing a specialist at MD Anderson? There's one here in NJ, y'all always have a place to stay.

RedRaider it pleases me in a way that I can't truly intimate that you're okay and in remission. I've always liked you, even on here. The world is a much better place with you in it.
We need more people like you.

You know I don't know what to say to this so I will just say thank you. Really.

Congrats brah, the feeling of getting past all that has to be amazing.

I have colon cancer that has metastasized to my liver. I had some targeted radiation done a few weeks ago and just started the next round of chemo, as the first round was ineffective. Radiation and chemo at the same time has been an as* kicker so far but I am hopeful. I have another CT scan coming up in a week and a half and have my fingers crossed. Wish me luck brahs and stay positive.

Im sure some of you know the feeling of not having much of an appetite while on chemo, anyone have any ideas on how to combat this?

you just do. just live your life as full as you can and enjoy each day. I wont lie I had a bit of depression after but I have come to realize that all you can do is move forward, if its my time then I will accept it but in the mean time Im going to make the most of my life.

I think this is why some people view it as an awakening/gift in the sense of how we view the world after. Stay positive brah and if anyone needs a ear or wants me to repeat the same bull**** we hear from other people just pm me or skype me.

I use it to my advantage.

My cancer is going to come back. For me, it just will. Don't tell me to think positive and meditate or some chit, it's going to come back and accepting that was my first hurdle.

I'm not afraid of it coming back. Instead, I live knowing that next year I could absolutely not be here, so what on earth am I doing with my time? I cope by constantly learning, traveling, meeting new people, and leaving a mark on the world. I'm not trying to be masturbatory here, but it's pretty incredible what you can accomplish if you really do accept you might die tomorrow.

If something is happening that I don't agree with, no one else is going to fix it. No one. City councilman being a potato? Guess I'm running for city council. No one at work has fixed this problem? Cool, time for me to build something. That's the only way I cope, get angry at cancer and channel it into something productive.

I am the only thing in life I can control, and even then, I'm not in control of when my body decides to kill me. Do something to leave a mark.

I took the week off to think. December I didn't get the commission increase I anticipated. I don't like where I am. I'm thinking of quitting and start my own business with the money I have saved. I'm so fricking sick of wasting my time without decent pay.

Yes but I'm also way too confident in my abilities, lol. It's like having the best parts of being manic, if that makes sense?

I couldn't put my finger on why, but now I have absolutely zero fear of rejection. I'm not talking about a romantic sense, but at work, with investments, I'm calculating and incredibly strategic about taking risks. I ask for absolutely everything I deserve and rarely am I turned down. Confidence, man.

I also got my first speeding ticket last week. *shrugs* It's not always a good thing.

I'll be back in california soon which makes that part easy.(insurance) rn I don't make any thing as I set the side job aside to try and get that commission bump. boss ****ing lied. I have dabbled in import resale. some months were better than others. I don't have enough for a house in a desirable area, so I'd like to put the cash to work.

Multifocal Multisystem Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis survivor checking in. Was diagnosed on 9/11/2001 in 4th grade and remember walking out of the doctors office and everyone staring at the TV and trying to get my parents to rush me back to school for gym class.

Started off with a collapsed vertebrae, over the next 8 years went into my knee, skin, mouth, and finally my lungs in 2008. I ended up getting rushes to the ER with bilateral lung collapses. Went into my 7th round of chemo a sophomore of HS and ended up 89 lbs at 16 years old.

Stumbled onto the misc back in 2008 after watching a Frank Yang video(of him doing sprints and eating bananas). Gave me a chance to laugh and also learn about lifting.

Currently 150 lbs and healthier than ever and the misc had alot to do with it.

Edit:Heres a couple snips of chest tube scars

I never thought I'd post something this personal on the misc, but I've been starting to worry about my future and I figure this is about the best place to vent a bit while staying anonymous.

Right before new years eve 2016, I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, Stage 1. While I"m not nearly as aesthetic or whatever most people with avi's on this site, I definitely thought I took care of myself (i.e. ate a lot of fruits/veggies, clean meat, avoided processed foods/grains/sugars, etc.) and exercised regularly, so I never really thought that something like this could happen to me. I saw all the stats about how 1 in 4 people or whatever got cancer, but I seriously never thought it would happen to me. I thought that it was because so many people live unhealthy lifestyles in America that obviously the proportion of people overall who get this is high, but it shouldn't happen to people who are careful like me. The doctor even told me that my bloodwork and all the test he ran showed that I was healthy and he was shocked that someone as young and healthy as I was got this.

It's amazing how fast life can hit you in the juggular. Here I am, 2 chemotherapy treatments in and with my hair falling out daily, it's becoming all too real for me and starting to get depressing. The ironically good news about my NHL type is that it's aggressive, which means it's curable. I'm only in Stage 1, and the doctor told me that even if I were in Stage 4, it'd still be treatable and have a decent prognosis. However, I'm worried overall that my life is going to be dramatically changed even if I beat this thing. I have to get 3 cycles of chemo + radtiation. Chemo and radiation are both super toxic to the body, and the doctor has already told me that there's a chance that I'll get cancer again in the future. It seems stupid to me that I'm getting treated with stuff that will make me sick with an even worse cacner in the future, but what can you do? I'm also worried that I may never get my hair back again and that I'm never going to be able to live a normal life now (i.e. get married, etc.) because people will see me as damaged goods.

Chemo overall hasn't been too bad so far. As I mentioned, I just got done with my second therapy and have pretty much been able to continue working and live as normal a life as possible (aside from the hair loss, which has been crushing for me to deal with mentally). Like I said, my bigger concern is what's next? Will my hair ever grow back, or am I going to look like George Costanza for the rest of my life? Am I doomed to die from a secondary cancer anyway after 20-30 years? I feel like a whole new can of worms has opened up, and I'm wondering if anyone has more information about some of this stuff.
