    Night shift is killing us

    http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders...s/shift-work#1

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/0...n_5672965.html

    http://time.com/3556130/night-shift-brain-work-health/

    http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-33638905

A massive study in the US has been following 75,000 female nurses who work shifts over the past 22 years. It has shown that one in ten of those who have worked rotating shifts for six years will die early.
Shift work was associated with impaired cognition. The association was stronger for exposure durations exceeding 10 years (dose effect; cognitive loss equivalent to 6.5 years of age-related decline in the current cohort). The recovery of cognitive functioning after having left shift work took at least 5 years (reversibility).
Shift work has also been linked with metabolic syndrome, a combination of health problems like high blood pressure, high blood sugar, obesity, and unhealthy cholesterol levels. ... The incidence of metabolic syndrome was more than three times as high in those who worked night shifts
That’s especially dangerous for people whose jobs require them to be on high alert and make split-second, life-or-death decisions during the night, such as medical personnel or police officers. It’s common for police departments, for example, to require rookies and lower-ranking officers to bear the brunt of night shifts.
ICU/ER RN checking in. Been night shift for 3 years plus change, and switching to days soon. My final night shift is 12/24/2016. FYI, here is pre-night shift veggie530 (as I started working nights) vs. 2 years of night shift veggie530

    groce

Misc, do what you can to get off nights. Don't let it drain your life away. I use to be a normal gym bro that could pass as someone who lifts. Now I'm like halfway between my AVI and my 2 year night shift self.

Also -- I've had 5 colds this year. FIVE. Use to get one a year at most before nights

can confirm, used to work 7p - 7a, rotating (holidays included). worst stretch was 18 or 20 days straight with a 3 hour total commute.

was full on zombie mode with no social life. totally unsustainable lifestyle

Do they mean constantly changing from day shift to night shift?

I dont see how just working 3rd shift and altering your entire weekly sleep schedule (eg sleeping during the day wirking at night on a consistent basis and not trying to swutch around) could be bad.

There's 3rd shift, and then there's also 10-12 hour night shifts. I think the 8 hour shift *might* come with less attrition

I worked 60 - 70 hour weeks on night shift for 3 years and I legitimately felt retarded towards the end. Definitely ****s you up. All short-term memory and cognitive function problems thankfully went away after I finished.

4-12 thurs and friday, 6-6 saturday and sunday. Three days off, free meals, and gym. Misc, listen to music and mturk while working. Pretty sweet gig while i work through college.

Much rather do this than retail work, and constantly fantasize about gas stoving myself.

Like if you consistently worked 10pm-6am for your whole life it shouldn't matter right? The study said rotating shifts though... So idk

Damn you gonna switch from night shift nursing to morning nursing? You might actually have to do some work now.

Used to work graveyard shift and go to school right after my shift was done. I felt like I was going insane after a while.

Maybe I'm not fully understanding but...

If the premise of this study/thread is simply that working nights, IE, keeping a "flipped" night/day schedule...I call absolute BS.

There are easily mitigating factors to explain health risks associated with working nights. Poor quality of sleep during the day for various reasons(You want to be social, there is stuff that can only be done during day, Jehovah's Witness, etc)

Outside of loss of dat dere Vitamin D and social life...I really don't think night shift is bad IF you are able to still get a Koala-Tea 6+ hours of sleep a day.

    This is what I think.

It's not necessarily the sleeping during the day thing that is the problem. The issue is with rotational shifts, where you're never getting a consistent schedule. The other issue is how night shift workers tend to eat worse etc., according to the articles

I'm a night shift RN working only nights, the occasional evening but never days.

For me it works out real well. I have access to a 24 hour gym and have just adapted my eating to the schedule I have. I have a very flexible schedule and pick when I work. So I usually work weekends and have week days off for errands when I do wake up and whatever I need.

For me it's a politicial and personal choice. I had a really ****ty start to my career with management and politics. It's a long story but in the end I decided to do a type of nursing that I'd be handsomely paid, pick my schedule and opted to only do nights. No management. Strictly being a nurse and doing my job.

I'm sure it'll affect my health but my mental health is the better for it. Otherwise I'd quit nursing altogether.
