i literally just spelled it out for you. MARRIAGE in and of itself is no longer a private institution. It is a LEGAL DOCUMENT THAT HAS CIVIL LIBERTIES ATTACHED TO IT. The gov should have left it a private thing, where churches can decide who they want to marry. BUT the gov did not do that and thus, they are restricting those specific rights from a portion of the population. If a man casually says "my husband" during a conversation or two men are holding hands walking down the street, then who cares? But like, what other rights do straight people have that gay people don't have, besides for marriage? My opinion on marriage is the government should totally stay out of it, there should be no tax benefits for marriage, and any two people can make any kind of legal contracts as they want.
