Do you like to travel?

I just got peer pressured by my family to go abroad. It's for a week in France and I don't even speak the language . I honestly would prefer to stay at home and train. It just doesn't seem worth the cost for how short the trip is . My money pretty much halved (I don't get lots of money but I don't spend lots of money). Even one of my other family members who is well off didn't like the idea.

Maybe it's because it's out of my comfort zone but can you guys please give me some advice so I can enjoy this trip im almost certain I will regret. What is actually good about travelling? I think it's just bragging rights.

Travelling in and of itself? Yeah, I enjoy travelling. Holidays begin for me as soon as I step out of the house. I like journey as much as the destination, and I like being immersed in different environments, and cultures.

OP, if you do have a bad experience, I wouldn't put it down to 'travelling', you might have just chosen a place (ie. the particular city/town in France) that wasn't a good destination for you.

I would try not to project (ie. impose your perspective onto others). Some people genuinely enjoy the experience.

it depends on who you're traveling with. If you're comfortable by yourself then thats great, but for people like me who prefer to travel with others, family tends to be not as fun

Most people do their best not to travel to a 'bad place' for a holiday/trip. I've never had a 'boring' time anywhere I've travelled, I love to travel in and of itself.

I was thinking of you travelling to France, having a bad time, and potentially blaming it on 'travelling'.

Travelling makes you grow.

Don't be a little bitch, and go out your hotel, dont take your computer, and simply walk in the city enjoying the sights.
Go on tripadvisor: "Top 10 things to do in city X" and do these things.

Where are you from? If you're American, taking a week long trip to France is a waste of time and money. It's too short to immerse yourself and do anything worthwhile

Edit: Oh yeah, forgot to mention I love traveling, although I am still a student so I can't really do it often because I lack money. I've been all over S.Korea, some places on Java and Bali island in Indonesia and some shorter trips throughout several countries within Europe, but I'm European so those are easily available for me.

A week is a vacation not travelling. If I was American I'd just go somewhere else in the states if I only had a week.....

If you are going though make sure you eat as many new foods as possible, do good tours and sightseeing in the day, and try to find some cool local spots to have a few drinks and socialize a bit at night. Picking up a phrase book and learning a few basics will enhance the experience too

EDIT: I disagree with the above posters too. A week is certainly enough to get an overview of a city and at least see the major sights. No, you're not going to be able to "immerse yourself" in the culture... but you'll never be able to do that unless you're moving over there for a few months at least.

Of course, 1 week is enough for one city and some attractions/tourist traps but do you really think it's worth it to come all the way from USA to just visit one city? Brah, France has much more to offer. I'm from Croatia, which is relatively close, and not even I would go there for only a lousy week. With the money it takes to fly from USA to France, he could have a better vacation somewhere near his home, USA is big and has all sorts of vacations to offer.

For me though it has to do with who you go with, I wouldn't like it as much on my own or with my family.

It made me question wtf i was doing sitting on my arse at home in England.

To everyone saying a week isn't enough, that's complete BS. I've been on plenty of Euro trips that were a week or less and they were totally worth it. I meet locals via CS or Tinder and have been showed the local stuff while also getting my D wet. Any amount of time away from home is fun and exciting unless you're a POS. People outside of the USA probably don't understand this but other states are not and will never be half as exciting as other countries are to us who live here. I'd take a 1 day trip in any other country over a week long trip in another state any day FFS

traveling to different countries is the best way to gain perspective on life, civilization, culture, and all things human op. it's such a trip being completely immersed in a different culture, time zone, climate, etc.

Your only regret will be not staying longer, since 1 week is kinda short considering how expensive the plane tickets are... I'd go for 2-3 weeks stay in hostels for super cheap and just try to save up some for the extra food and train tickets you'll want to buy for the extended trip. it's super easy to go around europe by train and see tons of chit.
