Workout to work out progress is gone – am I really still gaining 2 lbs/month?

The three month period where I could make work out to work out progress is gone now, and instead I have to settle for adding pounds to the bar after several workouts until I can hit my target set an rep count. The upper body lifts are especially slow, for example I finally added 5 pounds to my bench press after three horizontal pressing workouts.

With such little weight being added, I have to wonder – am I really gaining a half pound of muscle a week?

I mean, I'm still in my first year of training after taking many years off. Theoretically I should be gaining 2 pounds a month assuming diet and training is in order. But it just seems like such a little weight increase won't really do it.

    Thanks for any thoughts.
