Do the inmates still prepare meals like in the movies or is it catered ?

Yes, the food pretty much all comes canned/pre-prepped and the inmate workers mostly just heat it up at the kitchens at each yard, then put it on the trays, which are then passed through a food window to another inmate getting the tray, before they sit down to eat. We also have a 'Main Kitchen' that actually cooks some of the food from scratch on site, things like the cake, cookies, and the main dish in some instances.
When on lockdown we can often use 'critical workers' still, so dining workers make the food and trays still and load them into food carts to be pushed to the buildings. Then staff cell feed door to door and push the carts back, inmates clean the trays.
If we are on full lockdown, then staff will do everything from cook the food to make the trays; had to do this once before during an escape. Just me and the free staff cook to make ~650 trays, started at 1200 and still finished by 1700. Sucked, but we got it done.Short cuts to success are often paved with lies.

Most of it is large canned things or frozen; veggies, beans, soups, stews, pudding, ect. Prepackaged bread in 2-4 slice bags; the lunches just switched to a clear bag that is fully packed at production to be sure it has everything (bread, peanut butter and jelly or lunch meat and condiments, a snack (cookies, trail mix, Boston Baked beans, peanuts, ect). Those used to be packed into brown bags at the main kitchen but the inmates there would always snag stuff from them so half would always be missing something.
The pizza they get is Tony's pizza, same crap I had in school, and they do get some interesting things on occasion when the state gets a good deal. Had Jamaican Patties a few times since they were short dated; those were actually really good.
Fun Facts: The prison actually has an on site dietitian who plans the meals to meet the recommended dietary intake for an average male. He also deals with anyone who has food allergies or special needs.
Also, every day of the week has a different meal to meet every ethnicity: burritos/tacos/enchiladas sided with beans and rice for Hispanic, hot dogs/hamburgers, fries, roast beef, chicken, turkey for white, borscht, stews, cabbage meals, for russian. And so on.
Not sure what we do for black, but on MLK day we had fried chicken, watermelon, grape drink mix, and cornbread; legit srs. Asked the kitchen supervisor about it and he said it was just a strange coincidence.Last edited by gbullock32; 12-19-2018 at 03:50 AM.

Lol that sounds strangely similar to how they prepared the food for my base mess hall. Rotation of ethnic food and meals are composed to meet caloric goals laid out in a guide of sorts. We never had pizza though. The worst ever dish was canned sardines for breakfast. Stunk to the high heavens!

Lulz, did the ethnic breakdown in my building the other day; 1 Black guy in the whole building of 133 inmates. 80 Hispanic, 47 White, 3 other (Asian, Islander, Oriental), and 3 Indian.
