I saw a video on Athlean X loads the hip flexors going down and releases the tension going up. I have implemented this into my squat workout but I dont know if it has actually helped me make gains or if I am still just making my regular gains as before. I do feel the tension and release though.

Athlean X is great advice most of the times but he's such a buzzkill. If you want to have fun lifting while not being paranoid on what ligament you're straining and injuring don 't watch him. He'll stress almost anything to make you switch up your routine.
If it works for you and it doesnt hinder your progress go ahead and do it tho.

Do you have knee pain when squatting ?
If not, disregard the video since the guy is giving a tip concerning knee pain when squatting.
If so, disregard the video and improve/tweak your form or squat routine. IMO, tensing his hip flexor is a pointless cue to fix knee pain. However, even if it works, there is more important things to address first.☆ ☆ QUEBEC CREW ☆ ☆
