R.I.P brother,
"Come over here, then," I said. He responded with, "You come over here.'I didn't hesitate. I got up and walked over to the foot of his bed.

not exactly agreeing with you but you kind of have a point. I think doing a lot of research and not letting outside forces influence you helps a lot. That's what I've been doing, I squat ass to grass and deadlift with near perfect form and rarely bother with 1rms. No one can spot a single technical flaw in my technique online. It's tough not getting influenced for others though I imagine.
I find people's attitudes, especially some people in the powerlifting community don't exactly help people avoid injury and make it harder for people to drop their egos and feel satisfied in life and set realistic goals. E.g. a powerlifter like Mark Bell is a legend who's a very positive guy and doesn't make fun of others nor call people with different goals a *******. Silent Mike is an absolute legend too with a very positive attitude. The misc as well, despite its reputation seems like a pretty positive place too when it comes to lifting.
Powerlifters like Mark Rippletoe though, although have very good material are condescending as all heck and make it seem like "if you're not squatting ###, then you're a pathetic loser who should give up on life" or "if you're not squatting in your workout don't bother lifting".
There's too much projection in the lifting community imo. Most of it isn't from the gym bros who weirdly seem to get the worst reputation. Oddly enough, most people in the gym who are doing brosplits seem to have the best physiques. Most of the projection and judgement comes from the "compound movement master race crew" and people who don't get a bad rep. Again, not everyone. In before someone negs me, I too focus mainly on squats, bench, overhead press, and deadlifts.
such a sad way to go.

Herniated discs ain't no joke. I had one last year and the pain was so excruciating that I had to crawl and drag my lower body on the floor just to go to the toilet or get milk from the fridge, sitting down was painful and crutches made the pain even worse. I recovered after a few days and I'm still grateful to God to this day it wasn't anything major. It still hurts when I stand for long periods of time but other than that it's okay. Lifting heavy isn't worth it under any circumstances.
