How do you bring yourself to do something you dont want to do?

I hate doing homework and my gpa is going down. Deadlines dont make me rush into action anymore lol, I literally studied on the day of my exams last semester. Right now Im 5 weeks behind for some subjects. I put off going to the gym, when i can go first thing in the morning. I sleep until 1pm when i cant get up at 5-7am. I watch dumb **** on the internet when i could do literally nothing and it would be more productive. Its like ive gone downhill since high school with regards to my discipline

What strategies do you use or bad habits you got rid of, besides miscing of course.

Do you see yourself enjoying a career in the field you're studying? If the answer is yes, then this just comes down to discipline. Set your alarm and actually get up.. I don't know what it is but I'm 10x more productive if I get up early.

If the answer is no, quit as soon as possible and find something you will enjoy. I know that might seem like terrible advice, but I wasted 4 years on a course I absolutely hated. If I could go back in time, this is what I'd do.

Serious question, is your father not in your life? Has he never schooled you on discipline? Does he lay around high and drunk all day or does he get up and go to work everyday?

Work is different, I go to work and do around 20 hours a week atm while studying. Work is an obligation, because if you dont go you get fired. Im talking about everything else thats optional lol. And no my dads done nothing in terms of guidance or wisdom

Youre young OP, a lot of people dont really find what they want to do until mid - late 20s

Going straight from HS > Uni doesnt really give you time to find yourself and get some life experience. If youre not 100% on what youre studying then maybe a break from study is what you need

Stop looking at other things differently than work. It's all the same, they're all responsibilities. Same goes with lifting and eating right. They're responsibilities to yourself.

Had a feeling this might be the case. This is the problem IMO. When I came up my dad beat it into my head about this kind of stuff. It annoyed me at the time but he was literally right about everything he said.

You need to be self motivated, if you're not then you need someone to kick your ass daily and get you to do these things. This is why tutors, personal trainers, and chit like that exists (for people who aren't self motivated).

It depends on what it is.

I grew up without a father and without being taught ANY discipline whatsoever, so I had to learn that stuff on my own and try to undo a lifetime of bad conditioning.

A lot of people who have a strong work ethic were raised that way, so it becomes a habit to them. To them, it's something you just do. But people are lazy more often than not and that's what you should expect because our brains were evolved to conserve energy and do the least work possible. It's not normal to be a workaholic. It's not normal to want to do cardio for like 30 minutes or to resist the urge to eat junk food. Discipline has to be learned. If you were raised with discipline and that's all you ever knew, then it's a lot easier.

Anyways, because I don't have those habits, until I build them, I have to reframe the way I think about things and try to trick my own mind. Practicing "mindfulness" and meditating daily helps because you learn to view your thoughts and feelings and sensations with a sense of detachment, rather than identifying with them. With enough practice, it's like you're a robot becoming self-aware and you can see your impulses as lines of code and simply choose not to obey them, lol.

Another thing I do is track my habits. I got this one app "Way of Life" on my phone and I put some habits I want to build in there. People have a habit of pushing things to the next day without realizing that they did that same chit countless days prior. With the app, you mark down if you did that habit for the day and it will show as green for good, red for bad. If you have a long streak of red days, you know you're goofing hard, whereas with a long streak of green days, you're less likely to want to break that.

There's also the need to practice the ability to endure boredom. If you check your phone or Misc the moment you experience any boredom, even in day to day things like waiting in line, you're literally conditioning your brain to have that much more difficulty when the time comes to focus. You're building strong habits/compulsions for novelty seeking. You'll have to go through a rough period of learning to sit through the boredom. If you have a Mac, get the Self-Control app and use that to block websites. Or you can use the Focus app (which is like $20) and automate that to block websites everyday at a set time. When I need to be productive, I block Misc/Reddit/Facebook/etc all day until evening. And get something like Forest for iPhone which sets a timer (like 2 hours) where a little tree is growing and if you leave the app, your tree dies. Makes you feel a little guiltier about caving when you can visualize it.

Lastly, you have to understand that you have to do things one day at a time and the only thing you have control over is the present. People tend to have the habit of saying they'll start "tomorrow" and they view their future self as some abstract entity that will somehow be in a better mood, with more energy and willpower. And then it feels rewarding, to give up on the task that needs to be done by leaving the burden to your future self. But your future self doesn't exist. Tomorrow will come and 99% of the time you'll still be the same person. Expect the person you are in the future to be just as lazy and flawed as you are now. You have to break the chain. Focus on what you can do NOW, even if it's something really, really minor. And then when tomorrow comes, handle that as well. And keep doing it, one day at a time. Before you know it, you see the progress of the gradual work you put in and you built more of a habit out of it.
