    Positive community-police interaction thread

Please respect the spirit of this thread.

There are two related problems going on:

    1) It is absolutely true that people in power will protect their comrades in the general case. This isn't just true for cops, it's also true for politicians (like Shillary). Demanding accountability is good.

    2) If you choose to focus only on negative incidents like these, it can reinforce your pre-existing biases. For example, if someone believes that cops are racist and evil, and then every day, looks for cases of them acting out that way, they ARE GOING to find it, because some of those types of cops will inevitably exist in a country of 300 MILLION people. But the exact same approach could be used to paint a negative picture of ANY GROUP.

We should distinguish between (1) and (2). (1) is useful, (2) is not.

To counter (2), one must flip the script. Assume that the group you think of as an enemy is good, and look for examples of good action, instead of only seeking out bad actions. That lends to a more balanced perception.

This thread is for that - we seek out examples of good community-police interaction, and post them here.

    I will kick it off:
BLM Protest in Wichita meets group of police, resulting in cookout.

What was originally planned as a protest march turned into a cookout where Wichita police and a diverse group of residents broke bread together.

The Wichita Eagle reports that organizers of the protest met with Police Chief Gordon Ramsay for several hours, ending with an agreement for the cookout, which took place Sunday at a city park. Several Wichita police officers took part.

Black Lives Matter protesters had planned to march on Sunday, but after organizers met with Chief Ramsay for hours, according to the protesters, they agreed to break bread together instead.

The goal was to open communication and build trust between police and the communities they serve. The crowd at the cookout included people who were white, black and Hispanic.

At one table, three men – a black man, a Hispanic man and a white man – sat down with burgers next to police Lt. Travis Rakestraw to share their ideas.

    ...

The three men said they were surprised to hear that Rakestraw seemed to care about what they were saying, and that he had thought about the same issues. But they all said that they were planning on still marching.

Rakestraw, in his turn, said that from the police perspective, a conversation like the one they were having at the cookout felt more productive than many of the protests he’s seen across the nation, which are based on confrontation rather than dialogue. But he had no complaints about the Wichita protest last week that was nonviolent.

“I don’t think it’s a conscious effort,” Rakestraw told them, about why racial biases sometimes persist. “I don’t think anybody does it intentionally but we fill in the gaps with life experiences, what we read in the paper, and we start to view people as a generalization instead of understanding people as individuals.

Phoenix police sees Black Lives Matter as a ‘partner’

“The Phoenix Police Department doesn’t see Black Lives Matter as a terrorist organization. We view Black Lives Matter as a partner who holds us accountable,” Assistant Police Chief Mike Kurtenbach told the diverse crowd.

“We stand with you to find solutions,” he said.

    ...

If you want to improve policing, become an officer! We’re hiring,” Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton told the crowd.

One of my favorite stories, because I love cops and I love Shaq

The Florida police officer who played basketball with a group of kids after a complaint they were too noisy has kept his promise to return for a rematch.

And this time he brought backup - in the form of Shaquille O'Neal.]

Man, this is an awesome thread.

@Stizzel: I hear you. I'll add however that for the majority of cases, accountability does play a huge part. Even if superiors are willing to turn the other way, there are effective internal/independent review procedures in place to help curb any abuse of power.
Alternatively, there are instances of cops themselves choosing to resign or get demoted as opposed to seeking appeal procedures they may be entitled to and IMO, it does speak volumes as to their character.
Used to volunteer at a station a while ago and the area commander at the time, Gary Davey, was one such person. The published articles won't give you the finer details obviously, but the guy pretty much demoted himself out of his own accord. People may not see this as anything special but he sacrificed his own career and accepted responsibility on behalf of the force he commanded when really, he didn't have to. That's pretty righteous, IMO.

The picture is one of simple humanity, quieting a drunk, out-of-control young woman. Fingers to his lips, Davey spoke softly to her, reassuring and calming her.

Police say nothing good happens after 3am. Yet, despite his seniority, Davey goes out on the night beat once a month. And he was just one of a dozen police whom Herald on Sunday journalists and photographers accompanied last weekend on the streets of New Zealand's biggest cities. We saw them deal with great professionalism and humanity with violent drunks who, quite frankly, didn't deserve such courtesy. We also saw them deal firmly with those who posed a danger to themselves and others.

The other night, my roommate got absolutely trashed at a bar around closing time. He lost the person he was with, sat down at a table outside of a nearby establishment to wait, and passed out. The cops found him and helped him to call me. They let me pick him up and take him home, and didn't cite him for anything. Right before he waddles to my vehicle, the cop gave him as good of a high five as you can give to a nearly blacked out person. Nobody was harmed, situation solved.

Cops are investigated by their peers and almost always found to have "followed procedure". At worst they are suspended with pay.

On the other hand cops that expose other cops for breaking the law get harassed until they have to resign.

If you want accountability you have to look to the free market. Remember that time private security mutilated someone's kid and didnt even give an apology?

This is how most people are.

And most cops are also very receptive.

It's much easier to get high ratings when you focus on the loudmouth idiots though, which is why the media is driven to cover the most extreme morons instead of the civilized many.

There are literally hundreds of other threads for bitching and moaning. For any positive action, some people will respond sourly, that is not the point of this thread.

Pretty crazy bodycam footage. Cop responds to bad car crash and saves a guy from burning car

Senior Police Officer Dan Whitney responded to a 3 a.m. highway accident to find an SUV engulfed in flames against a large tree. A man was yelling for help from a small rear driver-side window. Whitney retrieved his fire extinguisher and tried to put out the fire, then began trying to extricate the person trapped in the car. The impact of the accident had bent the frame and all the doors were jammed shut, so Whitney bent the door frame back enough to pull the man through the small rear window. As he was doing this, an explosion from under the hood knocked off his hat and body-worn camera.
Unfortunately the driver did not make it

This happened back in July in my state, but I still thought it was a great story to see in these times:
9 Year Old Girl Uses Birthday Money to Buy Detroit Police Lunch

DETROIT -- Police officers at Detroit's 11th Precinct got a special birthday surprise on Saturday from a generous little girl.

A nine-year-old Detroit girl decided to celebrate her birthday not by receiving gifts, but by giving them, CBS Detroit reported.

Samya McLaughlin brought bagged lunches -- made up of sandwiches, chips, fruit and a cookie -- that she paid for with her own birthday money as a gift for officers at the precinct.

"I was thinking that I should feed the police officers because I wanted to show them that I support them and I thank them for all that they do," McLaughlin said. "I wanted to show them that all lives matter."

How did the young girl come up with the idea? After watching the news with her grandmother and seeing the devastation this week in Dallas, McLaughlin thought she would do something special for the officers in her community.

"We discuss things that's going on," McLaughlin's mother said. "I always ask her how she feels about it."

The officers made Samya "Officer of the Day" and presented her with gifts of her own as a thank you.

"It makes you feel proud," McLaughlin's father Sam Walker said. "She has a big heart and she knows how to care, and she knows how to appreciate what's going on."

Samya also passed out around 30 bagged lunches to the homeless in Detroit's Cass Corridor.
Honestly it's just a breath of fresh air to hear about something this where it's through the innocence of a child rather than tinged with some cynical implication or ulterior motivation to a make a point any which way. Just an act of kindness that holds many lessons many of us could all learn from and to set aside petty differences to stand together as a community.
I will stand firm, I refuse to kneel - The fury in me is divine
My dark grave awaits, my fate is revealed - But I'm not afraid to die

If you have any problems or need advice, feel free to ask

I made a thread about a positive police interaction that happened in Plano, TX between a cop and two onlookers who helped him safely make an arrest.

    It was promptly deleted. Why?
