Anyone else look down on machines?

I do. I mean I look down on the machines where you can do it with free weights barbells and dumbells. I'll give you a few.

    Bicep Machine
    Overhead Press Machine
    Bench Assist
    Leg Press

Machines like those where you are in a fixed position.

Idk I like to most of my workouts with free weights so other muscles are getting somewhat stronger for stabilizing it, it just feels more natural. And I dont like the fixed position you are in.

I mean yea I will do machines that I can not do free weights with or maybe its just inconvienent like the hamstring machine or hip abductor and adductor machine.

Before I entered this thread I thought your talk about machines meant robots and automated machines that are taking away jobs of hard working humans. In that instance yes I would look down on machines. But now that I have opened and read the thread I am very disappointed.

Sounds like you're a bigot. What did the machines do to you? All machines deserve the opportunity to make a living, just like you and I. Stop being a machineophobe.

You could always be the guy that maintains or repairs those machines that took the job of hard working humans. Someone's gotta do it.

I don't look down on them. I simply do not use them. I don't need to right now. They have their purpose, usually for people with injuries or getting some form of rehabilitation.

I think he's asking if anyone else aside from himself looks down on machines. I've tried some of them. I like some of them. But I don't include them in the programs that I'm serious about. I only have enough space for a rack, a bar, and some plates, so that rules out machines for my home gym.

My experience is that for basic strength/size training free weights are vastly superior to a machine workout to the point of resulting progress not being comparable. That doesn't mean that machines don't have their place or aren't useful or even superior for certain aspects of programming. What that does mean is that free weights dominate my training. Then again compound exercises also dominate my training and always compose the core of it unless I'm injured or have other restrictions, but I have no issue with making use of single joint movements when I feel they are appropriate.

Everything is a tool but knowing how/when each tool should be used on yourself, another individual, or general population is the real meat of things.

And then the machines looked down on us. . . .

You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

    Bench Assist
    Leg Press

Machines like those where you are in a fixed position.

Idk I like to most of my workouts with free weights so other muscles are getting somewhat stronger for stabilizing it, it just feels more natural. And I dont like the fixed position you are in.

I mean yea I will do machines that I can not do free weights with or maybe its just inconvienent like the hamstring machine or hip abductor and adductor machine.

Sometimes, it's good to isolate a muscle. Accessory work is a necessary thing & it's beneficial to have some stability while doing a movement.
I'd actually consider owning a smith, just to get in extra leg work. Before you say "man, you don't squat?! What?" Look at my sig... everyday is leg day, brah.

At 15, why aren't you spending your time eating more, training more & taking advantage of your natural GH production?

I was expecting to see Bootsy anchor the rhythm section on bass but it's Fred Thomas in this video - darn nice groove he's laying down. Also Fred Wesley (trombone) sporting a real tight 'fro. What a band.

You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

I used to be a strictly machine guy. I built up a decent amount of size and strength on them or so I thought. I did some labor for my father and I struggled with stuff he was easily picking up. He was 170 and I was a pretty lean 215 at the time. Even though I could lift more than most at my gym it was obvious at that point it didn't translate in real life situations.

My point is machines don't help much if the goal is strength. I looked strong, but was weak.
