Apparently LAPD had grounded all their choppers because of the low ceiling (fog) but Kobe's pilot was granted permission to fly with VFR (visual flight rules). It looks like pilot error but imagine the kind of pressure pilots doing private work for wealthy celebrities, athletes, etc. are under to fly through certain weather to meet a deadline. I mean the whole reason they were up there was to avoid the LA traffic. They were flying above the freeway and then he's started hovering in that valley before he's decided to turn back and probably couldn't see the hill when it hit 100% humidity with all that fog.

I have to ask since you've obviously spent a lot of time flying into a remote location for work where visibility would be extremely poor at times. Any close calls or moments where you were concerned?

Yes, one in particular that I'll never forget. We fly 737s in and out of the arctic, which is kinda crazy when you consider the ******t temps, wind and general conditions up here. These are chartered 737s, not public, and we always kind of wonder if the maintenance program is as good as say one of the major airlines.

Anyway, one day about 10 years ago we were taking off and just as we lifted off the runway the right engine's nose cone separated from the engine and was ingested into the engine. Goes without saying, but the engine catastrophically failed. The noise was like one high speed car wreck after another for a few seconds, as the turbine blades turned into violent projectiles inside the engine compartment, and the plane lurched to the right hard. The pilots somehow caught it, or the plane did?, and we veered in a circle around the airport until we landed safely.

During the ordeal the flight attendants were yelling: "Grab your ankles and duck your head!" over and over. One of them was crying.

Several people opted not to fly with that same charter group and took other means (on their own dimes) to leave work that day. I believe some left the North Slope for good.

Other than that, there have been plenty of turbulence events, especially when you fly over the Denali area. One time we dropped a couple hundred feet due to a 100+ mph tailwind that came out nowhere. Drinks were spilled.

    Good times.

This thread started a couple months after Kobe's last game.
Apparently the chopper was not equipped with terrain awareness and warning system, which would be extra valuable when visibility is a concern.
Shaq is pretty shook, hadn't spoke to him in a few years:

    Reminds me of Donnie Brasco.

It was really good. Everything was a nice touch. I liked seeing Joe Pesci the most since he came out of retirement.

I'm not really sure beyond that. Whatd you think of it compared to Casino?

13:20 from another angle on Martins Licis' channel.

Hard to put into words how awesome it is to see rivals, the last two WSM champions, training together like that. I love powerlifting but there's something about strongman that has always made it my favorite strength sport.

The speed of that second rep with 1003 was something else. "Felt incredibly light..."

    Kinda sucks, but....

    I dunno….

The thought of it bores me.

But I don't think my current path is sustainable...
What are you weighing at the moment? A few months of taking it easy couldn't hurt as boring as it might sound. Maybe just hit some higher rep PRs on machines or with dumbbells. Your strength will still be there.

Of course I completely understand where you're coming from. Training like you do at 52 is not only extremely impressive but it's not something anyone in their 20s or 30s can comprehend. Recovery isn't the same between workouts and those joints and tendons have a lot of miles on them. You're in a small exclusive club doing what you do because most guys at that age are a wreck.

I told you how 2019 was quite humbling for me taking all that time off but a year on I think down the track it will allow me to train for longer than if I never stopped. I'd never suggest a break like that but just scaling it back for a while couldn't hurt.

Of course. It was a 1990 film. I liked it but I didn't think JP was anything special in it.
I'd say The Irishman fared well above Casino, closer to Goodfellas for me.

This new gym I am trying out this week is a bodybuilder's dream. Has tons of equipment and everything is brand new; they opened in December. They also have 7 power racks and 7 full sets of bumper plates. Kinda pricey but hoping that will keep away the idiots that have over-run the other two gyms I have memberships to.
Totally understand and I spent many hot summers here asking myself the same question.

Just one person's opinion here but I reckon a few months of focusing on volume with machines and dumbbells would be good for you. Maybe drop a few pounds if that's what you want without the pressure of squatting heavy.

I've been doing some incline press on a Hammer Strength type of machine and the delayed soreness is just in the upper pecs, nowhere else. I never had that using DBs. So of course I'll keep using it because upper chest can never be too big. That's where I think bodybuilding training could help you maybe to target areas you don't have time to isolate when you're doing all those compound lifts. Personally I think there's a place for all of it.

Saw this photo of Big Z recently. He's in his mid 40s, no longer competing, and has trimmed down. Looks good.

    Spoiler!

I met him a few months before this and he had to be close to 400 pounds.

I always wanted to see what someone tall and built like a brick sh*thouse could achieve. He's incredibly mobile for 6'8" 440lbs.

It's like me getting firewood up the snow hill when the coyotes are making noise.

Any recos on netflix? Last 3 or 4 tries were shut down early and nba all star game is going as expected.
But I did sort of enjoy "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile". Bundy became his own lawyer.

On a serious note I've been tempted to buy a prowler/sled, farmers walk handles, frame, a bunch of plates, and do most of my training in the backyard or a park somewhere then hit the gym twice a week for everything else.

Everyone's different but for me pushing a sled felt more productive than squats. It'd be in my Top 5 exercises.

    1. Romanian deadlift
    2. Shoulder press
    3. Sled push
    4. One-arm DB row
    5. Farmers walk/frame carry

I used to do speed sets with a sled. On this occasion moving 600lbs about 50ft across the gym in 7 seconds. Unfortunately that gym had crappy carpet and not the fancy astroturf you see in football training videos.
