Ironmind are expensive but they can hold a lot of 11lb plates and appear to be in stock. They sell 1 3/8" handles that are 24" long and take standard plates and 2" handles that are 22" long and take Oly plates. I've got the thick handles and with 12 plates they weigh around 150 and look like this.

    Spoiler!

Speaking of training talk, I’ve been boxing for three years. Even went to Atlanta and fought last Sept.

Got clipped on the nose in the 3rd round and started bleeding, and the doctor stopped it with literally one second to go. It was the third time they had halted the fight for them to tend to it, and I was absolutely fine other than a little blood. My trainer said two of the three judges had me up, and some in the crowd later said I was robbed, but I don’t know. The dude was tough, and I don’t wanna take anything away from him.

If anyone is interested in a video, let me know. I haven’t uploaded anything to my dormant YouTube in a while.

Also, I sparred this guy several times back before our gym closed:

    https://boxrec.com/en/proboxer/76670

He’s a former son-in-law of George Foreman and came up in the Houston area under Foreman’s promotion. He was looking to make a comeback and found our gym (we’ve got a pretty good stable of older dudes that will go some rounds.) For anybody out there who has ever thought they’d go “one round with Tyson for a million dollars,” you’re an idiot. Trained heavyweights can do life-altering damage within one round, easily. This dude hit me so hard once that I thought I was responding to a question from the trainer, but no actual words were coming out of my mouth.

Just grab the middle of plates like a real man. They come in all different weights. I never wasted $ on dumb bells when I trained at home.
DR. 3time (until they quit, or it'd be DR. 6time)

Are you talking about those sh*tty rubber plates with handles? Please share a video of you pressing them "like a real man" because I could use a laugh.

Even if you somehow held a stack of 3 plates without them sliding around and smashing your teeth out that'd be like 70lb dumbbells. Manly benches 4 plates. He's probably going to need 100+ for a decent chest workout.

You just grab the hole of a plate for any dumb bell work. Works just fine. Especially after he benches with 4 plates. Press with barbells in a home gym.

So balancing a 44lb plate on each hand is enough for pressing? Maybe if you're a beginner. Benching heavy weight safely requires a rack. Dumbbells are more convenient and you're not going to get pinned under them.

It's a frustrating situation for a lot of people right now. I've followed his journal for years so I know how important training is to him and wish I could be of more help. At a certain size and age it's not even about how training makes you feel — it's essential maintenance. I mean if you're walking around at 250+ and not lifting then the knees, hips, lower back, etc. start to break down. You can focus on A getting lighter and/or B make those muscles stronger. There isn't really an option C.

Anyway I can't see the current business model for gyms being sustainable.

Sounds like you can get a rack with all the safety features for a lot less than a set of dumb bells. Using the plates as db's doesn't require any real balancing, you just grab the middle and go. If you can work out without a squat rack, surely someone can figure out how to workout without a dumb bell.

For a 10K/day CEO baller you're never short of excuses. Sounds like you're a beginner so we'll leave it at that.

I think clinging to gyms is backing a losing horse right now. Over here they've been open a month but they're limited to 20 people who must book during staffed hours, wipe down everything between sets, no showers, etc. One of the states has had a spike in cases so they're going to lock everything down again. I can easily see the same thing happening here now that everyone is pretending everything is normal and all those who didn't pull the trigger on a home gym the first time around will get screwed again. No thanks.

No thanks.
This 100%. This corona stuff has taught me that home gym is the way to go. And once our house is done being built I'll set aside a good 30k or so for it

You want to sit at the table with the adults but you keep embarrassing yourself.

    1. A squat rack would be nice but I don't buy junk and all that was available after gyms closed were cheap wobbly uprights that support around 200kg.

    2. I've always prioritized deadlifts over squats even training them twice a week. Skim over my training posts from the last 15 years and this will be obvious.

    3. After taking 4 years off and returning with a knee injury that occurred outside the gym, I made a decision not to do any knee extension exercises that would aggravate it until the knee felt stable again. When I tried a low bar position for GMs I found my shoulder flexibility was garbage and since I've never had a shoulder injury I decided to leave it alone and do RDLs instead. At this stage of my life I have no desire to increase mobility in a complex joint that is already working for me pain free pressing heavy numbers in my favorite exercises so my choice now would be a safety squat bar — I'm not a powerlifter.

    4. Dumbbells are by a mile the best piece of equipment for bodybuilding as far as upper body training goes. Unlike a barbell each side is isolated so imbalances are less likely to occur. I got those Ironmind dumbbells years ago and they're not only well made but long enough to hold 14 x 11lb plates. That's kind of a big deal when you consider how expensive heavy dumbbells are. See prices below. I also like the fact they have 2" handles because one of my short term goals is 18" forearms. Every time I use them I get a grip/forearm workout. I also use a 2" axle bar for deadlifts and rows.

Hope that answers your questions champ.

I think my biggest issue with barbells is that I always do low reps. Like 3-5 reps and for whatever reason I get chest strains when I habitually do > 3 x 5. With dumbbells though I can increase ROM and TUT but never get hurt/strains. At this point, I just need to lift again. It has been months

Good point. There's less temptation with dumbbells to target low reps. While low reps are obviously great for targeting maximal strength your joints take a beating and you can burn out after a while and start going backwards, increase the risk of injury, etc. Increasing the volume with dumbbells can lead to more hypertrophy and bigger muscles generally means greater potential for strength gains down the road. That's how I've always approached it. Build strength with sets of 4-6 reps and then milk those strength gains with more volume in the 6-10 range.

A few days ago I did 10 sets of 10 on high incline DB press with shorter rest times and that's something I doubt I'd ever do with a barbell because it's too tempting to load more weight on the bar and do 3-4 sets.

Not really, you just exemplified my point underscored with my advice that no one piece of equipment is mandatory. A bright mind like manly can sometimes think outside the box.

Is this wife pays for everything narrative some form of mid 40s FA cope? I wouldn't comment on you approaching 50 living with your parents and pretending to be a big shot investor who can't afford anything... if you didn't keep getting triggered by my posts which aren't even directed at you. For someone who can't stop boasting you've never once furnished this thread with evidence of your vast wealth.

Anyway I was having a conversation with Manly — not you. He can make his own decisions on what equipment he needs to buy. Your contribution was to say you stuff your tiny fingers into the hole of a weight plate and press that. While you're at it, how about you jump on a car forum and tell them all that they could save money catching the bus instead.

No, dumbbells are not essential. However they make a lot of sense for a home gym where you can safely press a reasonable amount of weight on your own without a power rack. Not sure what your problem is with that advice.
