Good plan. Nothing wrong with 8-12. Grinding away at low reps on compound lifts can be tough on the joints. Connective tissue only adapts so fast and with low volume you're probably not pumping enough blood into tissue that already has poor blood supply.
I use low reps for a short time make strength gains so I can cash in with higher volume thanks to those strength gains. I mean get strong for 5-6 reps and you'll eventually be moving more for sets of 8-10. The key is finding the right rate of progress so you're not getting hurt. If I'm doing sets of under 10 reps I always like to finish a compound lift with a high rep set where on presses I'll go as high as 30-40. It feels good. Cliffs: I see a purpose for all rep ranges.

We all know fibers hypertrophy and strengthen via the same mechanisms regardless of their exhaustion times. Moderate reps simply exhaust a larger spectrum, while lower reps of course are more efficient for 1rm strength.
