Difference between dumbbell squats and barbell

Assuming that the weight being used is equal. Is there any difference as far as effectiveness goes with holding the weight in my hands instead of on my back?

To my knowledge, it is near impossible to hold 200 lbs in dumbbells, which would be a relatively light weight for a competitive male athlete. Easier to balance and stabilize with a barbell. You can also take larger loads.

I understand the the weight progression is easier and more predictable with s barbell. I'm just wondering if their is a big difference between the two as far as effectiveness goes.
