Thanks so much brother. That one is an absolute slug fest. No breaks. Just twenty minutes of all out effort. Glad you guys made it to the beach safely. I'm assuming you are in SC, GA or FL? Yeah, it's looking like the weather is going to be unseasonably cold for the next few days and Hurricane Teddy is out there in the Atlantic churning up the surf. That should be the case for the first few days of this week. I wish I could get down there and surf some head-high waves but doubt that is going to materialize. Please be careful if you venture into the water. The rip currents will pull you out. If you get caught in one, swim parallel to the shore for 50-100 yards and you should be able to get out of it and come back in. Most people don't know that and many of them drown. Depending on which beach you're at, it could be very hazardous in the coming days. If nothing else, enjoy getting away from home and work for a while.

Comments: After only two hours of sleep, I woke up and left at 4:00AM to go meet some old friends at Topsail Beach for dawn patrol. I drove the 2.5 hours in the dark the entire way. Fueled on adrenaline and coffee, I made it and paddled out into some head high to overhead surf. It was somewhat cold at 50 degrees when we paddled out so I wore my winter time, 4:3 wetsuit, which is pretty thick. That made paddling REALLY hard. I caught about 7 waves. One of which was the best wave I’ve ridden in two years. I got three turns in off the top and hit a fourth, only to look down and realize that the bottom had dropped out and I pretty much ate it into about a foot of water. Good times… After two hours, I went in, towel changed into my work clothes right on the street, got back in the car, hopped on a conference call and drove 2.5 hours back to Raleigh. I did an inspection in Raleigh and one in Durham and driving home from Durham, I was so tired I could barely drive. Got it done though and it was worth it.
This is what we were greeted with when we arrived. The sun rising above the horizon and head high waves.
This photo shows the waves a little more, albeit they do look much smaller from this far away.
Here is a photo taken by someone using a camera and not their phone.

Comments: Slept about 9 hours last night and I’m still tired. LOL. Had a small surplus in calories but that’s OK. I was on the road and in situations like yesterday tend to go into survival mode where I just eat because I’m really depleted from lack of sleep and significant output. Stopped at Smithfield’s BBQ on the way home and boy oh boy did that taste good.

It was 65 degrees and cloudy, so that was quite pleasant. I need to start warming up more for these. My first mile or two I am really stiff so I run at like a 9-minute mile pace. I should be running in the 7’ish mile pace range during that mile. So instead I end up trying to pick up the pace toward the end when I’m already worn out. I will try to warm up next week.

Looks like you had a great week of training Trent.
That dawn patrol surfing trip sounds amazing man. Good for you for pulling that off. That sounds like something I would do in my twenties without thinking about. Kick ass doing it now man! Very impressive! I bet that ride back was rough. LoL.
Those were some great looking waves too. I thought about you while at the beach. We definitely had some rideable waves down there this week.
Impressive pace on that 5 miler, even up till midnight drinking beers you are faster than me.

Thanks Shane. That was a surreal morning. It would have been great to have been well-rested, but still amazing. The waves were incredible for NC and I have no doubt you saw some where you were as well. The ride home wasn't bad as the adrenaline was still pumping. The ride home from work that evening, on the other hand, was really hard as I could barely keep my eyes open. Thanks on the run. That was a little slower than last week, but still decent.
I realized last week that you are about the only one that stops in to my journal a lot nowadays. Thanks for stopping in brother.All-Time PR's and Info:

Was going to take a rest week this week but have a relatively slow week at work and am feeling pretty good overall so I’ll do a week of 12’s.

Solid set of 12s today Trent. 12 rep squats are definitely man makers. Accessory work looked really good as well. Pistol squats are hard as fawk, even assisted they suck.
Good job on the burpees!
If you are going to go over on calories for the day cake and ice cream was a solid choice.
As far as me being the only one here, yep, we are the last ones standing in here. Everyone has seemed to go the way of IG.
We need to recruit some more people I guess. LoL.

Ha ha, thanks Shane. Yeah 12 reppers will put some hair on your chest. Couldn't agree more about the cake and ice cream. It doesn't get much more satisfying than that if you're going to blow your calories out. As far as folks posting their workouts on IG, I feel like posting workout stuff on there every day is kind of like pretending you're a professional athlete or something. Or maybe other people get inspired by it. To me, IG is more like FB, but more "artsy", where it is less personal than FB and I am mainly on there to post photos or maybe the occasional workout milestone/PR. I prefer IG to FB as FB is downright disgusting to me at this point. All I see are random people I've known vomiting out their opinion about this or that and I'm just thinking, "you know? I really don't care what you think or I would have asked." Plus I wonder how much people actually neglect their life by being on FB so much. It's pretty sad. Just get off the screen and live life.... Anyway, sorry for the rant. It is an interesting topic and I mean no disrespect to anyone who posts their workouts on IG. Maybe they inspire others and if that's the case then great. I guess I don't work out to be a public figure or for any kind of recognition. I just do it to be better at life. And honestly, I wouldn't feel comfortable putting myself out there like that. I value my privacy. Well, thanks for hanging in here with me brother. Maybe Greg's leg will heal up and he will get back on here.

Comments: Definitely back in the red after yesterday. Actually made up for Sunday’s surplus too! Our son woke up about 8 times last night. We keep saying its teething but I really hope nothing is seriously wrong with him. Dragging out here this morning.
Strength: These sets all felt good, well, except for just dragging a$$, Lol. There is a certain satisfaction that comes with finishing the last set of deads for the cycle…
Accessory: Bodybuilding combo there. That was fun and challenging.
Metcon: This was supposed to be a 20 minute AMRAP but I stopped at three rounds due to time.

Nice job on that ruck hike yesterday. That is sweet to be able to get out and get a good 4 mile hike in mid day.
I see the big deficit came with a nice scale drop.
I like the deadlift and OHP combo. 12 reppers there will get the heart rate up nicely. I can see how finishing that last set of 12 rep deads would be satisfying.
Accessory and metcon work both rounded out a good looking workout Trent.
Good luck with your son. Teething is tough. I know we used motrin to help though that period.

Thanks Shane. Yeah, that was a good hike yesterday and it is nice to be able to get out and do that here and there. Yep, doubt that drop will last though. Lol. Glad to have deads behind me for another cycle. I used to like deads back when I had more time and energy but now I can stand them because I have to rush through them and am just doing them to get them done. Thanks on our son too. Hopefully it is just teething. It's weird, he will face plant in the street and pop right up like nothing happened. Then he's up all night teething? Just bizarre... Glad to hear that it does end at some point though...

A dozen deadlift reps can be taxing at any weight, so it's no surprise that you felt drained after those. Especially if you were fatigued going into it.
Teething can certainly do a kid that way. Just wait until his widsom teeth pop out!“Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities.”

Bro Work: I called it shameless as the only purpose for this was to get a quick upper body pump in preparation for wearing a somewhat snug-fitting shirt to work today. One time a few years back, I was on the treadmill at a resort in Florida and saw a guy walk in the fitness room from the pool wearing nothing but a bathing suit. He sat his beer down and did a similar circuit to what I just did, then picked his beer back up and walked out to the pool (where presumably all the ladies went wild). Point noted, sir.

Just getting caught up in your journal Trent...sorry I was away so long. You've been up to A LOT as usual: running, surfing, drinking beer til midnight, rucking, lifting and doing metcons. Way to go brother.
I have to say the "Zeus" metcon really lives up to it's name. It looks like the big daddy of all the ones you do.
I like the "Shameless Bro Work" btw...gotta look good in your work shirt haha!If in doubt, squat and run hills. So you walk into the gym and don't know what to do? Then squat and run hills. Have a miserable day at work and want to break someone's neck but aren't sure who's? Then squat and run hills. - Wendler

Thanks Greg. No worries at all man. Very thankful to have been up to so much lately and hoping it stays that way. IMO Zeus wasn't that bad. The worst metcons are the ones that don't really require a break and you only take one because you were training at an anaerobic level for so long that you need to stop to keep from going into cardiac arrest. Thanks on the shameless bro work too. I think the shirt ended up fitting alright. Lol. Very glad you're back brother.

Yesterday Afternoon:
Hike – Lake Johnson - Raleigh, NC
2.15 Miles, 37:41, 300 Cals, 138’ Elev. Gain, 104 BPM
10.03.20
BW: 173.8

Deficit: 368
Conditioning: Distance Run – Outdoor, Paved
5 Miles, 40:19, 8:03 Pace, 656 Cals, 163 BPM,
245’ Elev. Gain
Comments: Still managed a decent deficit even with more beers than average yesterday. That hike in the afternoon really helped.
Run: I was running around moving the sprinklers around the yard before this so I was already somewhat loose. Tried to step on the gas and almost got down to an 8-minute mile pace. That was 3 minutes faster than last week’s time. I’ll take it.

Comments: Way to wipe out a week of deficits. Now that’s how its done boys and girls.
I’m feeling pretty good but am going to take a rest week from lifting (to hopefully keep feeling good). My right knee has been a little sore for about two weeks so its time to rest it. Later this week I may join my neighbor at F3 for some boot camp style exercise. We would have to be there at 5:30AM though so that may take some divine intervention. Nah, ever since moving here about 10 years ago we haven’t exactly been that outgoing and I personally haven’t made any guy friends so that will hopefully be a good way to do that.
Walk: Wanted to walk more than this but was stopping every half mile to move the sprinklers and that took up a bunch of time. Might try to get a hike in later.
