I find it funny and frustrating at the same time that everyone was hyping up Wentz as the next Luck/Brady like prospect and now that it sounds like Rams traded up to draft Goff we get stuff like this...

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the Browns think the gulf in talent between Cal QB Jared Goff and North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz is "fairly wide."

To me their talent level isn't that far apart and Wentz obviously has the better physical ability but as far as QB ability right now Goff is definitely much better which is why I wanted him so bad.

Browns are now shopping the #2 pick. Clearly they think the difference between Goff and Wentz is pretty huge now

I think it all depends how the draft breaks down.

IMO our best move is to trade down if Buckner and Jack are gone. In fact I really only want Buckner at #7 with Goff and Wentz gone.

Tim Couch and David Carr jump out though. Both guys were pretty good prospects but went to awful expansion teams and took a beating after having to basically be THE guy for each franchise. That's a heavy burden to bear for some guys.

As for as Alex Smith he may have the mental fortitude to shake off what happened to him but not sure he's the best example because sitting him that rookie season likely would've been the best thing for him with the 49ers. The team actually tried in a way because Alex didn't start right away.

We're installing a new offense, have question marks on the OL and with our receivers. Even if we were able to land Goff or Wentz best thing for their long term development is to let them sit as long as possible this season.
Those guys are old. It's a different game now, it's a lot easier on quarterbacks.

All of these up and coming QB's played their rookie year. I really don't get the idea of sitting your franchise QB. In any new job, most people struggle at the beginning, at least compared to how well they perform the job, after a few years. Not sure why people think if a quarterback struggles his rookie year he'll never get over it. If that is the case then that player was never mentally tough enough to be a franchise QB. Or he was just never that good.

The idea that we want quarterbacks to sit back and watch on the sidelines in the NFL, but we rip QB prospects who didn't play a lot of games in college...it blows my mind.

Totally different situation IMO. If you can't succeed in college then odds are you're not going to succeed in the NFL. Plus there is only so much actual coaching happening in college. It's more time management, some basic coaching to fit a certain scheme and most of it is - use your athletic ability and make plays. NFL is a much more thinking man's game where knowing what you're doing and technique is a huge part of success or failure. The game is faster and more complex, the players are bigger and stronger.

The reason why you sit your top QB is to ease him into things and give him a higher % to succeed when he's thrown out there. Some guys get so shell shocked that they start seeing ghosts. Some throw so many picks that they don't trust what they're seeing out there and get hesitant to throw the ball - see Alex and Blaine.

If you let your young QB sit and let him soak up the coaching, get his mechanics in check and improve the team around him so he's not fighting for his life out there your odds of him having success sky rocket IMO.

I wasn't talking about college QB's that can't get on the field due to lack of talent. I was talking about guys like Cam Newton.

Lol if you watched Gabbert in college you already saw he was scared of contact. That wasn't created his rookie year.

Someone just pointed out this article to me about Luke Falk....it's official. This dude is my next year's draft crush unless he totally implodes this upcoming season

    http://www.seattletimes.com/sports/w...2-quarterback/

One of the biggest things to me is that the player wants this more than anything and the desire to work on his weaknesses and make himself into a better player.

Falk is already doing the things which show his passion for the sport and his drive to get better. Get this guy and Chip Kelly together and they're making some chit happen.

He does need to bulk up though. Similar to Goff in a lot of ways - runs a pass heavy offense, thin frame but slings it pretty well.

Not sure how this this going to paste but every year I take various site's big boards and average out the rankings. Gives me a good indication on where the player might go in the draft. Kinda like a composite big board I guess. I take CBSSports, Walter Football, Scout, Todd McShay, Kiper (hard to get), nfldraftcountdown, Matt Miller, Josh Norris (rotoworld), Football Insiders (Pat Kirwin) and a few more.

^That's pretty cool man thanks for posting that. Though seeing Goff listed at #7 really pisses me off

I need to stop getting so invested in these prospects cuz it really looked for a while like we had a legit shot at Goff and with that one fuking trade the Rams fuked us.

Just goes to show that rooting for your team to lose when they suck is not a bad thing. If the Rams won that week 17 game they're not pulling off that trade and we're a lot closer to getting our guy at #5.

Really the two missed FGs by Bears & Rams killed us. We would've been sitting pretty at #3 and could've easily jumped Cleveland if we wanted to to get hte guy we wanted most or sit pat and possibly get our own draft haul by moving down.

Bro, you know it's all love but lesbihonest... who was the last prospect that you "loved" who the 49ers drafted that ended up being worth a chit over the longterm? Ellington sucks. Kaepernick had an 18 month run before falling off the planet.

Goff is not built to endure NFL hits. His slight frame is going to get him killed since the two teams looking to draft him absolutely suck at protecting the QB.

in b4 the 49ers trade back in the 1st round and draft Paxton Lynch.

Just the fact that Goff grew up in our backyard, a niner fan, and even wore #16 bcus of Joe makes him a great story.
That goes to say he also has the makeup of a QB. Sure he can fill out a bit with his frame, but he's already shown his toughness playing behind a chitty Bears Oline. Will he boom or bust? We'll find out, but i'd bank on him being successful in the league

I've actually never had a guy I've wanted this much for the team at the time. I loved Ellington but he was never a can't miss/sure thing prospect. Same thing with Kap. Both of those guys were development players who I thought could do great things if they took to good coaching properly and got their chances. Kap looked good early on but let that success get to his head and never worked as hard on the mental part of his game as he did on the physical part of it.

Plus Goff was the anti Kap. I also don't see how he's not build to endure NFL hits. Who really is? He's the same size as Brady was when he got into the game. Quick release, good pocket presence goes a long way to avoiding big hits. Look at Ben Roethlisberger. The guy is a truck but he's getting beat up because he's hanging in there thinking he can take all this punishment.

I'm on the Luke Falk/Josh Rosen hype train now. We'll see where that takes me

I don't want Lynch in the first though if the trade wouldn't take much I'd be ok with it. He's another Kaepernick in a sense but that's not necessarily a bad thing. He can run but doesn't rely on it as much as Kap does and he's much further along as a passer than Kap was at this time in their careers. If he checks out mentally and puts in the work I think Chip Kelly can do some nice things with his career.

Eagles moving to #2 pretty much guarantees someone taking Paxton Lynch in the top 10.

The 49ers are going to be able to take a Top 5 player in this draft at #7. Thank you Rams/Eagles for your desperation.

I'm still worried about this happening....

    1. Goff
    2. Wentz
    3. Tunsil
    4. Ramsey
    5. Jack
    6. Buckner
    7. 49ers

Joey Bosa and Ronnie Stanley both scare me. Hopefully someone drafts Bosa or Stanley ahead of us. Buckner would be a great get.

Although with Goff gone now I'd rather we trade down.

If we can find a way to come out of the first two rounds with a combo of something like Jack Conklin/Taylor Decker, Vernon Butler/Chris Jones and Joshua Garnett/Cody Whitehair it would be awesome.

Now that the 2 good QBs are gone, trade down and take more shots at guys that can fill the holes. We're not going to become competitive in a single draft. This is a process and hopefully they don't try to hit home runs on questionable guys or guys with injuries. I'd rather they draft for potential/ceiling on good character players. If we can start to build a competent O line and finish 8-8 this year, I'll consider it going in the right direction.

Niners got the 2nd most capspace currently... Chances they go after Norman Smiley now that he's a FA? And would you guys want him on the team for the price he's asking? Something along the lines of over 16m a yr

This. I'd rather we trade back into the 13-18 range and pick up an extra 2nd/3rd round pick than stay at #7 and reach.

Hell no I wouldn't want him at $16mil/season. He's not that good. I wouldn't mind the team taking a shot at him but with more competitive numbers.

We definitely need to take a stab at signing Norman. I'm very curious what happened there. You can make a case that he was Carolinas best player last year and would certainly give us a #1 corner we need.

Would be great to address the position win a proven player but I agree this shouldn't be a blank check situation. The kid is from the Bay Area iirc so maybe he can be had for a slight cheaper rate.

If Buckner isn't there at 7 I'd be down with Bosa. Crazy production in college. He may not be a prototypical OLB in a 34 but dude has a nonstop motor.

Don't think we go after Norman. Would go against everything we seem to be doing which is building through the draft.

Bosa scares me in a 3-4. Some people compare him to JJ Watt but I'm not sure he can transition well to DE or OLB in a 3-4 scheme. Plus the off the field stuff is out there. Boom or bust guy and his better comparison may be a Ryan Kerrigan vs Watt.

Buckner is much safer choice IMO. I'd rather gamble on Noah Spence later on.

    DeForest Buckner
    Noah Spence
    Dak Prescott

    In the first 3 rounds.

I don't care how much they pay him, I just don't want it to be one of those situations where a guy gets paid and his level of play drops. I think with that they can concentrate most of the efforts on getting a solid OL and pass rush, maybe a WR in the mid rounds.

Apparently we are in the lead to sign Norman. I would be down with this, I know Paraag and Trent would sign him to some deal where he won't end up making a bunch unless he gets a bunch of performance incentives. Prolly a Kap like deal where if he starts to play bad we can cut him. Not like he's gonna come here and just make the most on the team, don't think that would sit well with guys like Staley or Bowman who he would now be getting paid more than. If we don't get him I'm fine with that too but it would be a solid pickup for the right price if they can get that done.

I'm down for Buckner at 7, not sure about Bosa.

you guys are chill with kap making 12 mil a year to ride bench and spread cancer in the locker room but act like 16 is too much for one of the top cb's in the league? Norman would be a huge pickup

    Norman is

    1) a product of the system
    2) a FA because he was becoming a cancer in the locker room
    3) a CB and NOT a QB

Not sure Norman is a product of a system, he was awesome last year and if we could be guaranteed that he'd play the same way then $16 a year is worth it whether he' s a QB or not. If Brock Osweiler can make $18 a year playing QB then Josh Norman can get $16 mil playing corner.

Of course because there are no guarantees in life I'm sure his contract will be more in the $14-15 mil per year range. If we sign him we have to be smart and can't just give him a deal which pays him but doesn't push him to improve.
