In! Welcome everybody! My first page post will be dedicated to Samurai Champloo and Shinsekai Yori. As last time, I will give descriptions of the show, followed by a short review/commercial as to why you should watch it.

In Samurai Champloo, corruption runs rampant in the midst of the Edo Era of Japan. A single mistake leaves Fuu, an orphaned young woman working in a teahouse, with her hands on the chopping block of an angry samurai. Desperate for help, she bribes a loose cannon swordsman named Mugen to save her.

Then Jin, a disciplined yet master-less samurai, enters the teahouse. You can imagine what happened next. The resulting battle between the two ends up setting the place ablaze. Facing execution the next day, Fuu agrees to save them both, on one condition: they must become her bodyguards as she searches for the samurai that smells of sunflowers.
First, the action show. I like to describe Samurai Champloo as the type of show the “cool kids” would watch. It’s action oriented and has a very chill vibe to it, but still doesn’t fail at being funny and intense. Being the “brother” of the other critically acclaimed “Cowboy Bebop”, you will find the structure of Samurai Champloo is similar. Although it does focus on the plot more than Bebop, it is still episodic in nature. And instead of a “jazz cowboy western” feel to it, it is replaced with a Hip-Hop Samurai theme. The main characters are very likeable and their shenanigans while they advance through the overarching plot is very entertaining.
The soundtrack is absolutely stunning, which is no surprise, as it was done by the late and very well known “Nujabes”. Both the OP and ED music are terrific, and the rest of the soundtrack doesn’t falter. It’s the type of music you could just download to your phone and listen to like any other music.



Following a sudden outbreak of psychokinesis in 0.1% of the population, a rapid transformation swept the world. The godlike ability to manipulate matter remotely turned many power wielders to violence, inciting a long period of upheaval. Finally, after a chaotic era shaped by the rise and fall of oppressive regimes, the psychic humans were able to achieve a fragile peace by isolating their society, creating a new world bound by complex rules.

In the town of Kamisu 66, 12-year-old Saki Watanabe has just awakened to her powers and is relieved to rejoin her friends at Sage Academy, a special school for psychics. However, unease looms as Saki begins to question the fate of those unable to awaken to their powers, and the children begin to get involved with secretive matters such as the rumored Tainted Cats said to abduct children.

Shinsekai yori tells the unique coming-of-age story of Saki and her friends as they journey to grow into their roles in the supposed utopia. Accepting these roles, however, might not come easy when faced with the dark and shocking truths of society, and the impending havoc born from the new world.
Shinsekai Yori, translated to “From the New World” is a very unique anime in that it was based off of the very popular western novel, “Brave New World”. This show does have a horror tag, but it isn’t “scary” in the way you might think. However, there is discussing of “fiends” and other things supernatural, as well as some pretty sketchy scenes. The entire universe behind the show is very well thought out and developed, so everything that is there is there for a reason. The show is too complex for me to discuss in a way that you’d even get a glimpse of the beauty of the show and how it develops, so my best recommendation is that you watch it and find out yourself.
As with all my other favorite shows, the music is perfect for the show and sounds amazing.
If you have read and enjoyed the novel I mentioned earlier, like supernatural shows, or enjoy more profound themes and a unique and developed fantasy world, this show is for you.
