    Calories: 1700, 241C/106P/41F

    Workout:

    BJJ 2 hours
    Drill 1 hour
    Stuff from yesterday
Note from Paul: even with overhook, go to the side first on butterfly. Only go over if they post hand.
Also, double underhook butterfly and extend them out; can switch back and forth to leg bundle if needed by rocking hips back and forth.
Lasso sweeps: standing if they walk back, turn and sweep by hitting outside of knee with foot. OR if they're closer, lasso foot on hip and inside foot hooks their ankle and sit up.
Half guard pass... hip over as if being swept then hip back to advance.

    Open mat 1 hour
Good rounds again, used butterfly hooks a lot more, also some lasso guard but need to really protect my bottom leg and keep it heavy on their calf as I'm getting knee cut some. Good rounds with Alicia, got some butterfly sweeps and also passed the arm under while in closed guard. In another round I came up on a double leg after failed butterfly.

BLEH I AM SICK TODAY. Upper respiratory infection. So no BJJ but the doctor did OK gentle cardio. So I did go to the gym.

    Calories: 1765, 267C/97P/42F

    Workout:

Run 3.3 miles easy in 30 min (9:00 pace)
Pull up to 5 toes to bar to pull up x 3
    Knuckle push ups narrow 5 x 8
    Chin ups 2 x 3
Chin up with L sit plus slow eccentric x 2

I feel so bleargh. There are calories in Dayquil so I am going to get an alternate decongestant.... mad I wasted so much on that today. Probably for the best not to be in a huge deficit when sick anyhow, but finding an alternative tomorrow for sure.

Injuries and illness, urgh, glad you're feeling better though. Oh man I despise DayQuil/NyQuil yet it's the only thing that really helps when I'm sick. To this day I can't drink anything grape flavored because I get NyQuil flashbacks to being sick. Grape juice will make me puke on the spot.

I see running up there too!

I've been feeling the running lately. It's SO MUCH EASIER when I am lighter and leaner that I've begun to appreciate it again. I'm actually pondering going for another sub-6 mile this September, just to throw that in there for myself. I also like having some things to do that aren't BJJ! Though I will return to training tomorrow. <3

    Calories: 1590, 212C/103P/44F
Feeling fine on slightly less protein and have more room for carbs and fats

    Workout:

Ran 3.5 miles in 30 min, 8:31 avg. pace
    including 5 x 20-second strides @ 6:30, 6:00, 5:45, 5:30, 5:00 pace
Including a few short strides at the end of a run is a good way to ease into speedwork

    Pull ups 2 x 3 +1 negative, 1 x 2 + 1 negative
    Adductor prehab 3 x 12 cable adductions + 1 x 12 abductions just cause

I also walked for an hour or so pretty briskly between clients for work. Didn't get to do more pull ups throughout the day, because it was just too cold to do them on scaffoldings as I did yesterday.

Feeling much less sick and quite good.

Also fun fact. The other day I saw the most jacked trainer at the gym trying to do a pistol squat and failing. Been seeing all the trainers trying these lately and I wonder if I've kicked up their competitive instincts lol

Returned to training post-sickness today and it was AWESOME, just a really good session. Sometimes, time off can refocus me and break old patterns, not to mention get rid of those little aches and pains that can hold me back. I also got asked to roll by two female black belts and I enjoyed that a lot.

    Calories: 1560, 183C/116P/45F

    Workout:

    BJJ 2 hours
    Level 2 gi
    Deep half Bernardo sweep
Keep head tight to their body
Switch underhook to grabbing their knee. Clamp to keep them from digging the underhook.
    Grab lapel.
Bump them to pass lapel to other hand. Really tighten. Then bridge to sweep (keep knees tight) and wind up in double under.

    Sparring from standing 6 x 5 min
Worked that position and came close to sweep but not quite! Used butterfly hooks a lot more. Got Jedi Mind Trick and whispered "Jedi mind trick!" while I did it, which was fun. Got a low single takedown. Stopped some bolos.

    Advanced 1 nogi
Shoot, sprawl, sit through, seatbelt, back take.
Tip from bb training partner: use more momentum on back take.

    Rounds from standing
Lots of inversion, got low single again, lots of leg entanglements, got one really sweet dive under half guard sweep from their overhook, got a good nogi omoplata and used it to sweep, got a guillotine that turned out to be a crank. Comment from male blue belt rolling partner that my leg pummeling is "better than most." Sweet.

Good day! Soon off to see Rachel.

BTW for anyone curious, this is my usual breakfast these days. Steamed zucchini, maybe some tomato, one egg over easy, 3 oz egg white, 2 pieces turkey bacon, 1 piece Ezekiel bread toasted, and 6-8 oz melon. Looks like a ton of food but it's around 450 calories, 52C/31P/14F.

I take the crusts off the toast and dip it into the egg yolk, then make egg/bacon sandwich with the rest.

I had to weigh myself to figure out which weight class to enter for the tournament next weekend. Good news! I lost 3 lb over the holidays. So I can go into the under-135 class.

    Weight: 133.4
    Calories: 1615, 205C/108P/45F

    Workout:

    BJJ 2 hours

    1 hour drill
    closed guard
    berimbolo
    butterfly guard entries
    sweeps

Then I did 3 x 2 pull ups on the pull up bar installed now at the academy, hooray! LOL Marcelo can only do 3 pull ups, crazy because he is the BJJ GOAT but he admits himself he is not good at them. His grip strength is incredible, though.

    Anyway...

    Advanced 1 gi
    Butterfly sweep recovery
If the sweep fails, frame and keep both legs on the same side, kick out to create space, come back to x guard and sweep from there.

Great live rolls today. Got sat on by a black belt. Great roll with visiting purple, almost finished back take from berimbolo (he was like "I want to see where you're going with this" to my berimbolo entry lmao). Did really well against some female purple belts. One just moved here and says she likes training with me because we are similar levels and sizes! Similar level to a purple, whee. Anyway--got some butterfly sweeps. Need to counter people sitting the hip out when I'm in half, though. I DID get a dummy sweep on someone, good as had been drilling. And I keep getting more butterfly sweeps and shall continue attempting them.

Weight is lower than I thought it would be so I'm fine for the comp. I've also felt super run down from the intensity of BJJ training--clearly even 1750-1900 is a deficit for me and I don't need to go nuts eating 1500. So had a big more today. Training was also HARD AF basically an hour and a half of pure hard rolling.

    Calories: 1720, 239C/109P/45F

    Workout:

    BJJ 2 hours
    Open Mat 1 hour--
Really good rolls, basically blitzed every female blue belt in the room. Got single leg x-->double x-->baby bolo-->short choke on another two-stripe blue belt woman very quickly, which prompted Matheus Diniz to tell me to stop picking on her (hopefully in a joking way). Rolled with a visiting middleweight competitive blue belt and passed her guard, settled in on top, think I may have almost taken the back? Turns out she knows my competitor from my first-ever comp as they are both from Ireland. Small world for BJJ women. Got a lot of omoplatas somehow, used them to sweep not finish; used lasso and spider to sweep some, half guard of course, played more closed guard also. Thumb is only around 70% functionality but felt good. I also rolled with a white belt woman twice; the second time I asked her what she wanted to work on, she didn't know, I suggested she work on sweeps so we did that and reset whenever I passed. Then she asked me to drill! I am so happy to give back to newer people.

    Advanced 1 gi
Bernardo sweep plus other option: same as last lesson on the deep half plus lapel pass to double under pass. Added if they move their knee down before you can pass the lapel, turn with them and turn it into an over-under pass. I will need to review this a few times.

    Live rolls 6 x 5 min
Tough ones with some guys I hadn't seen in awhile but really good, kept me moving fast. Lot of inverting and struggling in half guard. Tried to use deep half and couldn't finish the sweep but close, maybe finished once. I CANNOT finish north south choke in the gi for the life of me. Need to work on that. Also need to block hip switch when I am in bottom half. I am proud that I swept John using a sequence he drilled with me the other day. He laughed about it because, well, he is the one who taught me to do what I used on him so how bad can that be?

Did 5 x 2 pull ups (in my sweaty gi, which adds some weight!) after class.

The rest of the day was spent feeling, whew, REALLY exhausted, so Rachel and I had a nice, low-key date day and then I had dinner. Back to work tomorrow, no training. Part of why I went so hard today.

Couldn't make BJJ today so did a quick gym workout in the morning before work (and before breakfast). I think my body has adapted to a calorie deficit somehow so training before breakfast works now. Weird.

    Calories: 1505, 185C/107P/43F

    Workout:

    3.35 mile run (8:57 pace)

    Pull ups 5 x 2
    Push ups x 15, 4 x 10

Going to buckle down this week and really make sure I'm on weight for Saturday.

    Calories: 1505, 187C/107P/43F

    Workouts:

    Morning--
Run 3.34 miles easy (9:00 pace)
    Pullups x 2, x 3 + 1 negative, x 2 + 1 negative

    Midday--
    BJJ 2 hours
    Level 2 nogi
    Smash pass knee shield
    First, leg weave.
Leap forward and grab head, then use elbow to fold them aggressively into themselves.
Escape leg using other knee to pry out if you can't simply kick it out. Pass as usual with folding pass, either to mount or side control; can switch head control to crossface as long as you bring your other arm to block the place your leg was.

    Positional sparring several rounds
    Regular training

    Advanced 1 gi
Butterfly to double leg push/pull to slx to dlx as we did last Marcelo lesson
Additional detail, break their collar grip before moving from slx to dlx
    live training from slx
    Regular training

Good rounds in general, really used the pass from the first class and will integrate that into my game--it is very compatible. Good rounds with usual training partners plus visiting blue belt woman. Trying deep half, eh. Trying berimbolo and berimbolo counters, going pretty well. Was told I had done a good job by a brown belt after class as he had watched one round.

I'm pretty tired, not gonna lie, and hungry, but I survived. I don't know if what I'm doing is too extreme. I think it's okay because I'll ease up after the tournament on Saturday. I couldn't live this way all the time for sure.

As the above visitor commented, yes, I am pretty miserable! LOL. I don't mind this if it is temporary. I would never maintain such a large deficit for a long time (roughly 750 cal/day deficit... is a lot). My mood is fairly irritable and my energy is low, and recovering from workouts is not great. I didn't run this morning because I slept, which is good news--being able to sleep is important and I often get insomnia while cutting.

    Anyway!

    Calories: 1500, 185C/107P/43F

    Workout:

    BJJ 2 hours
    Level 2 gi
Warmup with closed guard leg over shoulder then arm bar transition to triangle.
Then closed guard, they stand, pistol grip sleeve, break grip, pass to the other side, foot on hip, grab heel and cover toes with hip, tripod sweep.
OR use it to transition to SLX.

Shark Tank round sweep/pass/submit with Hank and Nicky, super super tough guys, had one ten-min round with Hank! (Former wrestler who goes hard). Also escape from side control in the next round.

    Advanced 1 nogi
    Escape from body clinch
    Elbow blocks their shoulder
Scramble backwards until you can get your knees under you and come up
Overhook if they try to get to the back or to go front headlock.

Live positional training x 1-2 minutes for a few rounds, then several 5-min rounds
Did pretty well getting to closed guard or escaping. Used the pass from yesterday some.

Tough training overall! Mostly rolled with purples and strong guys. Also feeling a bit fatigued. Jiu jitsu was pretty good, though. It was fun being in a group (for the first class) with two of my friends/great training partners; we're all blue belts and have similar styles with slight differences and we all had great moments of training.

    Thanks fam!

Today was rough. I was just really drained. Ate like 30 calories more lmao. Also walked an hour pretty briskly after training, between lunch and work, but no run.

    Calories: 1530, 185C/108P/47F

    Workout:

    BJJ 2 hours

    Level 2 gi
Closed guard, pistol grip on sleeve, break grip, add tricep grip on sleeve. Use hamstrings to swim out to feet on hips. Sit up while pushing them back. Put in butterfly hooks. Switch tricep grip to belt grip, LOW so they can't pull their elbow back; also grab some of the gi along with the belt for a firmer hold.
    1. Use a butterfly hook to sweep them over the side where you've removed the post (the side with the trapped arm); really throw them over their head. First PUSH then PULL with the arm so they don't escape.
    2. If they stuff your leg, switch to half guard. Keep that grip across their back on their belt, but also swim your other arm in and underhook and hug, then switch foot hooks for crowbar sweep.
    3. If they get to knee cut position, break their collar grip and hold their hand out away from you by the sleeve; also grab their far collar to help frame. Then bottom leg swings out and goes up to their hip to block that knee cut leg. Then hip out and recover closed guard. [Then we progressed to either previous sweep or whatever else.]

Live training from closed guard, then live rounds regular training.

    Advanced 1 nogi
You have seatbelt but are slipping off to one side. Swing leg and keep seatbelt tight. Other knee comes out. If they roll, switch to choke immediately before they can swim in for underhook. Don't need to have hooks to finish choke; do RNC or short choke.

Live rounds from seatbelt. Then regular training.

Generally: good rounds. Rolled with brown belt who berimbolo'd well in the gi. Rolled with RC in nogi and he kept d'arce choking me while I tried to stop his knee cut. Marcelo told me to defend my neck better and I tried! Ahh! Decent scrambly round with John and some rounds with other women and Hank. He says my shoulder pressure in top half is good. Did some running around to N/S on a blue belt guy after passing his guard pretty decisively. Got to SLX and full X a few times and came really close to some half guard sweeps on John but it's John, he is half guard guy so didn't quite work. But probably would on a woman my size who doesn't specialize.

+ 4-5 miles walking throughout the day, most of it in one chunk

Man I'm gonna be happy to eat more and get back to lifting after this comp. But also looking forward to comp. Friday my friend from Chicago flies in to train with me and also compete alongside me! It's her first tournament ever and I'm excited for her. Also, Friday is Marcelo's bday so Rachel and I are going to make cupcakes for him tomorrow. I won't eat any but I don't care. <3

1-2 pounds just to be safe. I need to be under 136.

    To that end.

    Weight: 134.2

    Calories: 1510, 133C/111P/67F

    Workout:

    BJJ 2 hours

    Drill 1 hour nogi
    Uchi mata from underhook
    Arm drag single
    Arm drag arm trap double
    Low single
    Snapdown to headlock
    Snapdown fakeout to shoot double
    Breaking closed guard
    Half butterfly drag into SLX
Guard pull to dummy sweep to SLX to full X/reverse X sweep

    Advanced 1 nogi
Shoot, they sprawl, sit through, back take
Very smooth, got compliments on my technique
    Live training 6 x 5 min
Tough rounds with tough people, good practice. A black belt showed me a rolling kimura when someone plants their elbow in z guard. Need to try!!! Got two butterfly sweeps after opponent posted hand and I flipped him over his head instead.

Then went to my girlfriend's place and made cupcakes with the MG logo on them for Marcelo Garcia's birthday tomorrow. Gonna bring to the gym and... well, not eat any, obviously.

SO FIRST GOOD NEWS UP FRONT:

    9 matches, 6 wins (3 by points--11-0, 15-0, and 17-0--and 3 submissions--Ezequiel choke in gi, RNC and armlock fromclosed guard in nogi), 3 losses by points (0-8, 0-3, 0-2).

Bronze medal in gi. Silver in nogi.

In the gi, the only match I lost was to a woman who had been an ADCC finalist and who had submitted my friend in nogi absolute--my friend is a 165-lb purple belt. In nogi, I lost to a 16-year-old (LMAO, worst loss of the day) and then somehow made it to the finals anyway, where I lost to a woman whose previous 28 matches had been won by submission. She subbed literally everyone but me; she couldn't even pass my guard, so the ref stood us up and she shot a quick single into my closed guard and I didn't have time to do anything else.

So yeah, really happy with how the tournament went. Took home two medals and held my own against some of the toughest opponents I've ever faced in my life.

I also coached my white belt friend and she won her first ever match!!! ... But then lost the last three. She has lots of time to improve, though.

More details tomorrow. I did train yesterday. Calories were reasonable but low carb high fat for my weight cut. Ate more today (in the 1900s). I actually didn't even need to cut that hard--this morning my weight was 131.6(!).

IG post on the comp is here: https://www.instagram.com/p/B7hfgPpJpQY/

Today I did train because my visiting friend was still here and I wanted her to get a chance to stop by Marcelo's again. But I ate a bunch more calories. Steak, broccolini, and potato dinner with dark chocolate with salted almonds for dessert.

    Calories: 1940, 218C/145P/59F

    Workout:

    BJJ 2 hours

    Level 1 gi
Stand to break closed guard (hands on biceps and jump up). Both hands push down a knee. REVERSE grip their pants and pass other arm around leg; grab collar and use shoulder pressure to pass leg. Stay on toes and run to side control, establish head control and underhook. Then if they frame, chest pressure down the frame, pass head control arm over the head, and americana.

Few min positional guard break training.

    Advanced 1 gi
Collar drag to ankle pick and come up. Stay BACK so you can then push the knee in and then pull leg across, pass guard. OR if they pull their foot back, go to foot/feet on hips and another grip, then sweep of choice (I used tripod).

Live training regular, rolled with Hana and then Bobby and then another black belt guy, John, and Alicia, and a white belt guy I kept in my closed guard who accidentally wristlocked me by grabbing my hand very hard. Tips: more knee clamp, can sub someone that way even if they are double under passing.

I learned after class that a bunch of blue belt BJJ women avoided rolling with me because they knew I hadn't won gold at my comp and thus thought I would be going super hard today to make up for it (lot of competitors do that). Not sure how to feel about that.

    DAY OFF TODAY

Here are the videos of my matches!!!!

    Round 1 (I won 11-0)

Round 2 (I won by submission)

Round 3 was with a minor so I cannot post it but I won 3-0.

Round 4 was with an ADCC Trials finalist and I lost 0-3. I had seen her crush a 165-lb purple belt in absolute nogi earlier and was intimidated, to say the least!
    Round 4 Part 1

    Round 4 Part 2

In nogi I had 5 matches and won 3 (15-0 and also subs in 1:32 and 1:16), but only got video of the finals, where I did terribly. Ah well.

    Back to training today.

    Calories: 1965, 255C/130P/58F

    Workout:

    BJJ 2 hours

    Level 2 gi
    Knee cut pass stop drill
Thumb down grip on collar, kick free leg, sit up and regain guard
    Positional start rounds
    Regular training

    Advanced 1 nogi
    Guillotine entry
Extend them with butterfly hook and then grab top and bottom of head and snap down to guillotine. Keep elbow up both to finish and act as frame. Staple foot down and maybe put leg over them on that side as well.
    Regular training
Some great scrambly rolls with visiting guys, including one who used to wrestle. Lots of leg entanglements and X guard back take attempts.

Still kinda drained, so I'll just hit the regular gym tomorrow and back to BJJ drill/rolling Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

Feeling a bit better today. Had a great drill session and my appetite is calming down.

    Calories: 1980, 244C/123P/67F

    Workout:

    BJJ 2 hours

Drill 1 hour--kimura trap and nogi berimbolo

    Half guard kimura:
    1. Get the far side kimura and jam their hand into their own hip so that they can't step their hip toward you. If they try to arm bar, KEEP PRESSURE UP ON HIP, roll over and follow with kimura.
    2. They try to pass toward head, swing to n/s and open legs wide. Foot on same hip as kimura. Crank it.
    3. Or if they're too close to your head, swing back around and again push their arm IN toward their own stomach. Can post on head and jump back to the other side to finish again.
    4. Hip escape and butterfly hook sweep and then do the above.
    5. Keeping half guard foot, axe kick head down and then get foot to hip to finish. Then can switch to arm bar if needed.
***post hoc addition from Philzinho: if they plant their hand, shoot hips up and cover their shoulder with yours. Grab kimura; EXTEND, roll onto back, extend arm away in a circle like stirring, and come up on top. Almost like half guard leg underhook sweep.

    Nogi berimbolo:
    1. Grab outside of heel and DLR hook.
    2. KICK FAR KNEE.
    3. Drop DLR hook lower and grab with hand behind knee.
    4. DLR hook again and pull in. Push on the heel to twist and make him fall. Shoot forearm across heel.
    5. Kick out far leg to put on the mat for good.
    6. Grab far lat for control.
    7. Transfer hook to far leg and invert underneath. Can grab own foot through the leg. KEEP FOOT EXTENDED SO THEY CAN'T TURN BACK.

NOTE: can also use RDLR to sweep by putting leg behind far heel. Then put regular DLR hook as they fall.

    Advanced 1 nogi
    Over under defense
Elbow their head to the side while bridging.
Kick leg down over their tricep, or chop down with arm; sit up, grab for crucifix or go for seatbelt to back.

Position rounds, then live training. Went really well. Cannot finish berimbolos but got some decent entries and leg entanglements. Also got some kimura traps! A good day of training and enjoying the scrambles.

I'm going to drill lasso guard with Kyle on Saturday, because that's another area where I missed some sweeps in the tournament. I love how much I learn every time I compete and how much it energizes my training and motivates me to try difficult new things!

Congratulations on the wins and medals, that's awesome!

Does everyone do about the same number of matches in a day? I'd think by like 6 or 7 people would be pretty fatigued. That'd be rough to have to fight someone who came in for their first match and you've already done six. Is there a lot of down time between matches?

The way Grappling Industries organizes it, we fight round-robin. So we're all equally fatigued, just rotating back and forth between each other as competitors. I.e. I fight woman A and woman B fights woman C. Then, next round, I fight woman C. Etc.

Plus, the gi (wearing the kimono thingy--the gi) division was broken up and held separately from the nogi (wearing just spandex) division. So I fought four matches in the morning and five in the afternoon; it would have been just four, but I made it to the final round and got one extra.

All that said, I have superior stamina to basically everyone I roll with. I think it's from my long history of running. I just have good cardio no matter what, and I don't gas out very easily. I'd venture to guess that you've gotten some of the benefits of that too, hammy!

Still eating more calories today. Very much enjoying it.

    Calories: 1980, 237C/135P/65F

    Workout:

    BJJ 2 hours

    Level 2 nogi
Butterfly hook elevation, grabbing wrists; swim hands around the wrists and push them overhead then out to the side. Land with guillotine and get heel over opposite hip.
Counter: roll toward head side and pry arm off.
Counter to counter is roll with them and regain position, provided they don't peel off your hand/arm.

Positional and regular training. Sat out last two rounds because jammed my bad thumb so iced.

    Advanced 1 gi
Guard pass (start with circle pass) when they stiff arm. Push their arm out and wriggle with hips twisted forward into the space, then fight for head control and flatten that frame even more.

Positional rounds... bonked my head real hard. Iced for a round. Not my day! But am OK. Regular training for which I was definitely not 100% but that's OK too. Glad I learned the trick on wrist control with butterfly to set up guillotine.

We also did a very cool warmup drill--getting on all fours and chasing each other around trying to touch each other's legs. GREAT for wrestling. I also got a cartwheel butterfly guard pass in one round, which was cool.

Back to drilling tomorrow. Lasso guard!

Friend! You're back! I need to stop by your log but I'm EXHAUSTED and kind of ill today so I'm gonna go tomorrow. I did do a tango class with Rachel today but then had to cut our date short because my stomach is giving me serious issues. Part of this mild lingering sickness perhaps. The tango class was really fun tho.

    Calories: 1850, 244C/131P/41F

    Workout:

    BJJ 2 hours

    Drill 1 hour
Lasso guard inversion to sweep (either with hands on pant legs and figure-4 lock or just shooting the leg through).
Lass guard sweep attempt to then kick out the far knee
Lasso guard inversion to ompoplata when opponent stands--key is to grab the near pant leg to aid the inversion, then figure-4 legs and grab the collar THROUGH legs and swing around for triangle.
Super Marcus lasso sweep (grab FAR pant leg, get hip right near it, plant free foot to force them to post, then hook far ankle).
Vice guard! Sleeve grip, DLR hook, foot on far hip. Grab near pant leg. Get free leg over their arm. Grab their collar and use it to push/pull them forward to post hand, along with DLR hook, and shoot a triangle. OR option 2 that I made up--grab cross sleeve and use that to yank them to you before shooting the triangle.

    Open mat 1 hour
Good roll with Jordan! Our private next week with be great. Many rolls with purple belt guys and one with Alicia. I got her with a butterfly sweep again. I got a white belt with the Super Marcus lasso sweep (yay). Played some lasso but everyone sat down. Played a lot more closed guard and got a cool back take from closed guard-->spider-->shoot through.

Feeling blargh. I need some better luck here guys.

Ooo, tango would be fun. We went to part of a dance class that did samba and cha cha though left a little early so didn't get all of the steps on the second one. It was fun though a bit clipped and robotic feeling at times. We changed partners a lot with learning the moves sections at a time. I'm not very graceful but at least tried. Tango would be really fun to try.
