    Lat/row machine choices and opinions

Hi all , from what I've read here from really old posts , this Lat machine from Body Solid is pretty decent .

    http://www.fitnessweights.net/p99-SL...Equipment.html

Unfortunately it won't quite fit so I'm debating to cut the floor to fit the base in a "T" design so I can add some concrete to the lower part of my basements floor to create a 3-4" drop .
I have 81-1/2" now , and if I remove the ceiling tiles and rubber floor I can just get the 83" necessary to make it fit , but it may be close though .
So instead I'm thinking that cutting the floor to drop it 3"s would be better . My false ceiling is a special grid system that only takes an inch of room , so it won't help much .

What got me started on the idea is I have always wanted a Lat machine that has a pin to pull on a weight stack as opposed to changing bumper plates all the time .
Because of the design of my old Lat machine , I cut a hole between floor joists to get the extra room , but I can't find a decent machine that offers the pin stack and has the same design . Well there's one ,but I think it looks kind of cheap , plus you can't do seated rowing

    http://www.amazon.ca/AmStaff-Fitness...0G+Lat+machine

Here's what my gym looks like now . You can see the Lat machine goes into the ceiling a few inches . But I'd like to replace that panel and just have a machine below the ceiling .

If the ceiling joists ran the other direction I could easily get it to fit between the joists , but I can't unless I turn it 90 degrees . Sooner cut the floor .

One thing I didn't care for with the Body Solid was rowing . With mine I put the attachment on for your feet and sit on the floor , but with the model your still seated.

I guess I should mention if anyone knows where to buy a Body Solid in Canada . I may have to get my passport renewed so I can pick it up at Montana shipping outlet . Only a 40 minute drive .
Seen one in Ontario but is was like 3K plus shipping

Well I have noticed there really isn't a ton of options out there as far as Lat machines . I think the Body Solid 300 is the winner ,and I'm hoping the stack it comes with suffices .
I really didn't want to pay more than 2K for a Lat machine , but by the time the smoke clears with the exchange rate and shipping across the border I think it's going to be close to 3K .
Looks like a decent machine though . I guess while it's uassembled , paint it yellow so it's color matched

For that price you are close to custom made to your specs. There are a couple small one-man manufacturers left who will do that.

I just had one made by Edge Fitness that might fit your needs.

He does custom equipment, so he could likely make it work go your specific dimensions (if it doesn't already). In fact, I had him make it custom for me so that I could fit it into my space (I only have 192 sq ft.)

He's located in Ohio, so you may be able to pick it up if you want to save on shipping.

You know guys I was thinking about how to build one . I wasn't aware you could get custom ones made to your specs . Unfortunately all the good stuff goes in the USA and seems to always be in Ohio . I couldn't be further from there if I wanted to though .

Can you buy the weight stacks and rods separately ? If so, I was debating to buy a welder last year as my neighbor can weld .

    Those guys do nice work.
In theory , wouldn't the bigger the stack you have give you less travel in the system?
You wouldn't have a pic of the top from the side handy?

Nice looking machine. Is the cable just sitting on the pulleys at the top or is it retained somehow?

    It's actually really easy.

The carabiner stays on the top cable and I just slide the loop for the second cable on it like I would a handle.

He even put a retainer bolt to hold the lower cable right up next to the top pulley.

You can kind of see it in this picture:

And most of the units I had been looking at used the same type of design (although most had the cable running in front of the seat, which could tear the upholstery.)

It just lies over the top of the two pulleys.

Haven't had any complaints with it thus far, but I'm sure he could make a retainer if asked.

At this point I've used it for curls, Pushdowns, pulldowns, and rows and haven't had a single problem with it coming unaligned.

I have an older BFS/Pro Elite lat machine with a somewhat similar design, but they extended the tabs that hold the pulleys in order to insert a spring pin just above the cable. Simple design, but it works well to hold the cable in place for little/no extra expense during construction.

Contacted seller . Someone in Regina has shown interest and I won't know till this afternoon whether the deals off or not .

No big deal as I'm liking the idea of building my own this spring as that way I won't have to cut my concrete floor and replace the cement . I've only got 81-1/2" height to play with so I will have to drop the floor in the Lat machines spot .

I noticed some of the expensive lat machines have the stack designed to the side to get better access instead of reaching in the middle .
I'd like to implement that idea if I build my own . IMO it would just take one more pulley on top to redirect the cable . Hopefully it won't add to much resistance

There's the Powertec machine as well.

Why not keep the one you have, and get a functional trainer or a cable crossover?

Nice looking machine and great review . I always wondered if they felt wobbly . I'll have to make sure I design mine fairly wide

There's really not enough room (to my liking )
    That would be nice though

Just curious. Why do you have 2 of the same racks?

    The good news ,
now I'm really interested in making my own from scratch after seeing that the stacks and parts are available separately.
This will be very beneficial for me as now I won't have to cut the floor to drop the Lat machine by a few inches , I'll just design one a few inches shorter and maybe make an adjustable seat so it drops a few inches lower than normal to make sure I don't loose any travel in the pull .

I wish I knew how to use sketchup as I'd like to start a new Lat machine build thread and get some opinions

I should update this . I’ve welded three racks together, one for each ceiling joist .
The outside ones have one pulley and the middle one has two. In the future the cable will drop down the centre pulley and go back up again .
The pulleys below are 6” in diameter to compensate for the cable making a 180 .
Here’s a poor attempt at sketch up to give you an idea .
The post in the front is not built yet . I’m going to make some vectors and get a local cnc plasma machine to cut out my parts.

Here what it will look like when completed .

I purchased a pec machine that used a weight stack . I bought it basically to use its parts . Here it is installed

The cable and hook come out of this 1/2” lexan . I used to be into car audio , so I used my old skills to make this edge lit area . There will be panels that go in when it’s finished ,so you won’t see opening like you do now

I remember when you first posted this.

Looks to exceed my expectations by a huge margin. I don't have a lot of vision when it comes to projects like these but from what I see so far it's going to be cool as hell. Can't wait to see more.

Great project, nice work, building a bespoke piece to your own specifications is really cool.

Look forward to seeing the finished article.
