Misc. Med Thread Vol. 3: caribbean diabetus strikes back

In last semester of non pre-med track - it's ~3.44, but I'm gunning it right now and I think it'll be 3.6+ by graduation. So no pre-med courses; I'll eventually have to do the post-bacc, which feels ****ty $ and time-wise. It is what it is.

Could you elaborate on why your preferences switched? Maybe a pre-conceived view of the field changed?

I'd be interested in IM myself. I think it's tough to know what'll be a good fit for anyone until those MS4 rotations.

I was interested in the emergency cases, but then realized a lot of the ED cases are more like urgent care and siht they could see their PCP for. In addition, the ED is too hustle and bustle for me. I like occasional emergencies, and then the ability to chill. In the ED, you're always moving and always seeing the next patient. Some love it, some don't (I particularly did not).

I feel like all this stress and hoops to jump through has been making me selfish. All I care about is survival. The next test, etc.
I used to genuinely care. Want to help people. Now all I care about is myself.

Really hoping it is just stress and burn out. Don’t want to forget why I’m doing this. Any advice? Anyone else go through this feeling?

I need to vent: I’m so fed up with my Histology professor. This class is the most difficult course I have by far, which is a joke. 25% of the class failed last semester. I’m 100% Srs. No curve on anything. I’m at a loss on how to study for this course. I’m getting B’s in most of my other courses without a lot of trouble (except Anatomy, lol). But this one? I’m hanging on for dear life with a 74. Why is something so low yield so difficult?

Lame. Hold me, brahs.

Histology: where someone tries to convince me that those purple blobs mean something different and I decide pathology isn’t for me.

I can tell you that red is eosinophils, and that ugly looking stuff is bad. Maybe recognize a bite cell on a good day. Otherwise I do that thing where people make up what clouds look like. “Oh, that looks like a bear eating an ice cream cone, if I see that on the test I’m gonna go with “blank” disease. Oh, the squiggly grand cannon, that is “blank” stage whatever cancer.”

Never failed me. Gonna get screwed on boards when they use pictures I never seen before.

4th year is exponentially better than MS1 and MS2, however 3rd year can be great for some and terrible for others. Yeah you switch settings and work in the hospital, but then that also comes with its own problems. You said you're starting to only care about yourself, well depending on your interactions with residents and patients, your cynicism just might get worse in 3rd year to the point where you start questioning if medical school was even the right choice for you. I've seen it happen to a few classmates.

But more than likely you're just stressed the fuk out. It does get better, you only have to study for shelf exams in 3rd year, and then 4th year (after a few sub-i's) is a walk in the fukin park, one that we really shouldn't even be paying for.

TLDR; we're all gonna make it brah. Hang tight. Take a multi and keep lifting heavy.

Used to work in healthcare before medical school. Even with the occasional mean doctor, and crazy patient yelling at me, sort of miss being on a floor and running room to room. The chaos. And just being too busy to think.

Yea M2 year blows. I'm on campus studying (now that Step is looming [June 8th]) all day err day.

Wake up at 5:30-6, make breakfast, on campus by 7am, work out at 11am (1pm on weekends), eat at noon, back to studying until 8pm or so.

A lot of people share the same sentiments -- it's disillusioning when we're in med school but spending all day studying instead of actually dealing with patients. M3 year will be a huge change obviously and seem more "purposeful"

Yeah. They’re ridiculous. Our image exam is free response, and my professor will ask a question about the most confusing part of the image or very poorly word the question.

Yeah. They’re ridiculous. Our image exam is free response, and my professor will ask a question about the most confusing part of the image or very poorly word the question. Such a joke. I didn’t pass Histology last semester (68% no curve), so now I gotta annihilate boards. Granted, I have no interest in Derm, Neuro, ENT, or Ortho, but that’s not the point. We get the M2 exams from last year for practice and they are a JOKE compared to what we get. Someone in that class must have told him how easy it was.

I feel the same. Stupidly became super attached to my #1. 2-5 are OK, 6-8 are cope and 9 or lower is LDAR territory. I would like to at least know I matched before getting overly picky though.
