Value of winning a world cup is higher. More people tune in to watch and more people would also see their country win WC rather than their club win a European Champions League. Also results in more pressure on the players and in general it's almost a requirement for a GOAT legacy. It's just like life, it isn't always fair. For Ronaldo it isn't fair he plays for Portugal but that's just how things go. He has to do something remarkable to top Zidane in 99 or Maradona and Pele.

I agree players are better now. But you can only compare past players with other past players to determine how great they were. In every sport athlete's have improved since 1950. Areas of improvement include training methods, discipline, technique, nutrition and the list goes on...100m champ of 1950 wouldn't qualify for the Olympics today, doesn't mean he was not the greatest of his era and potentially greatest of all time.

Considering Ronaldo still has 3-5 solid years left in him he can easily rise. Him being on top for over 10 years may outweigh the world cup wins by others. Lets see. He doesn't have to win a World Cup, but if he can just step up and be amongst the top performers, it would really help his legacy. I know he was sort of injured in 14.

It's tough to compare eras because the game has evolved so much, but I'd say somewhere in the top 15, or top 10. Right now he's a clear #2 behind Messi.

Most of us weren't around to watch the older players we're comparing him to; I know I wasn't. But we'll continue to debate it.

Arguments for/against: Won 3 World Cups, however his team was stacked. You could say soccer was slower back then but you could also argue red/yellow cards didn't exist and Pele received harsh treatment. Scored a ton of goals, but counted goals from friendlies and charity matches. Despite all this he is one of the most talented and dominant players ever.

- Maradona

Not as much silverware and stats as Messi/Pele. Probably the most talented player ever. What he did with the ball was only seen again when Ronaldinho was in his prime. Lead a very weak Argentina team to a World Cup victory. Led an underdog Napoli team to title wins in the hardest league in the world at the time, the Italian league. Was probably on PEDs?

- Messi

Almost as talented as Maradona, better finisher however and faster. Much more consistent than Maradona, and has titles and stats to back it up. However his team is stacked. He plays on the greatest team of all time, with some of the best players ever. You could argue that it helps Messi or that he's that amazing that he often makes his teammates look weaker. Lacks the leadership and heart Maradona had and is one of the main reasons he hasn't had much international glory

Four: Cryuff - Revolutionary, started total football. As talented as the top 3 but didn't have as much glory.

Five: Alfredo Distefano - Made Real Madrid what they are today. Played box to box midfielder.

Six: Ronaldo 9 - Most talented striker ever. Was putting up Messi/Ronaldo numbers when he was only 19. Shame about the knee injuries.

Seven: Zidane - Elegant and deadly. Zidane to this day is the most elegant player to ever play. He won France the World Cup with his two headers against Brazil and led them to a final in 2006.

Eight: Cristiano Ronaldo - Most athletic player ever and one of the most consistent players ever. I know a lot of you think he is a top two player but the fact of the matter is he is just a stat machine. He rarely gets the team involved and usually waits for others to do the work for him. Lacking playmaking skills, average dribbler. Plays on a very stacked team. Only reason he is not higher is because he just isn't as naturally talented as the rest. He is a machine though and the records he has broken speak for themselves. A top 10 player for sure.

I have to disagree. I believe that he is in that category. He is for sure one of the greatest goal scorers of all time, as well as one of the most complete players of all time.

I have to include a man that has scored 50+ goals in straight seasons, in amongst the greatest for sure.

With that being said, idk if he is number one of all time, but he is for sure top 3. For me, him and Messi are 1 and 2 greatest of all time
