Dog Lovers - Why do we do it to ourselves

They do not live long enough, my boy Dave was diagnosed with Cancer last night. Gutted to say the least as he's my best friend.

He's home for the time being, doped up on drugs and will remain with us while he is happy.

My Border Collie is about 13 and her back legs are very weak and she has cataracts. She is still very pretty and most of the time content. The vet has recommended cortisone shots monthly along with laser treatments and they have seemed to have helped. I was very skeptical, but she has perked up. But, I agree that our best friends aren't with us long enough.

Man, so sorry. It's so freakin hard towards the end, I know all to well.

My boy "Jonny" has been on the edge for awhile now. Last year at 14 years old he decided to eat 2 electric razor blades. Against all odds we sent him into surgery and he survived. Now @ 15 he can barely walk, has accidents here and there but everyday I wonder how much longer he will be with us.

If your like me you'll be curling up with him every chance you get. All you can do now is make him as comfortable as possible.

My wife told me she doesn't want another dog after Jonny.......... I asked her where the hell is she gonna live then.

Damn, now I'm sad. You'll get passed this. After Dave, hopefully some lucky dog will catch your eye and he your new best friend.

Man I'm so sorry to hear this. There might be many people out there that don't understand when we say our dogs are our best friends but they become a huge part of our lives. Our first dog passed away at 22 months old and it was tough on us. Great pictures by the way.

What a great looking boy! Losing a dog is so difficult. I hope you have some more quality time with him. You can't make him better but you can help make his remaining time with you as good as possible. Let him know how much he is loved and what a good boy he is. When his time with you is over, be merciful, mourn your loss THEN go get yourself another dog. You are obviously a good owner and there are so many dogs out there that need a person like you in their lives. After a while they will come to realize how much you needed them in yours too.

I'm so sorry to read this. I did the home hospice thing for mine over the summer and he finally told me that was enough in September. It will take longer than you think to get past that kind of ordeal. Stay strong and relish the time you have left with him. All the best.

I lost my lab of 13 years this past October.
I don't know why, but I mourn for dogs more than I do humans.
Perhaps it's because I believe there is an after life for humans.
Dogs give you unconditional love.
Can't say the same for humans.

Same here, lost mine last April and it was the hardest thing I have had to do. Haven't gotten another dog yet, there are times I want desperately to hit the shelter and get one but then I worry about not getting one anyone near as good as my Andy was.

my buddies rott was even younger than bubba at 2 years and he just passed from cancer too

Thanks all, he is happy enough at the moment. Our female rottie knows something is wrong she keeps sniffing his leg and being submissive around him (which isn't her usual style).

Sorry to hear about your boy. He's gorgeous. I have a dog and a cat, and it's my cat who's going through it right now. I have to take him for an ultrsound to check his liver tomorrow. He has kidney problems too and he's old so I know I have to cherish the time we have.

Whatever the pet, they're a part of the family and it's sad when we're reminded of their mortality

I've had two best friend canines in my life and each for over ten years.
Tis a painful loss to endure to be sure.

I'm sorry for your loss. Rotties are the best. My first one, Shaq, died of cancer and he was only 4 at the time.

Unrelated dog news: My younger dog, Zeus, just stole my blanket. I went to lie down with it only to realize it was on the floor under his face.

The poor fella's time was up at the weekend, the cancer had basically eaten through is front leg and practically broken the bone!

The vet who is a family friend came round and put him to sleep on the sofa where he used to sit to survey his garden!

Gone but never forgotten.

We had to put our dog down last april, cancer was taken over and it absolutely sucked doing it. Today for the 1st time my wife mentioned possibly getting another dog. She has been very resistent to the idea and has flat out said no, today I came home from work and she shows me a pic of some monster ass dog and says she wants one, I kinda preferred my little jack russel.
