How to know you're being too loud in apartment (at what point do you not care?) 32k+

I've lived in an apartment for a few years but this has always bothered me since I am a huge music fan. I'm trying to figure out what loudness is 'acceptable'. The main issue is I have more or less $5-6k worth of music stuff (b&w cm9's, b&w m1's for center and rears, yamaha a3050 powering this) that I love. The apartment building is pretty darn old but the walls are cement so I know my side neighbors can't hear a thing. The issue is the floors are wood and from what I could remember when I was taking the tour I could hear people walking upstairs (footsteps) so I'm assuming the floors aren't very sound proof. I'm on the top floor so its hard to really gauge. The type of person that lives here is an absolute mix from asian families to graduate students.

Im young 20's so I don't really care enough to stop listening / get headphones, but I also don't want to be a huge dick (small dick is fine).. also never had a noise complaint.

    Reps for opinions.
I like fast cars, nice watches, sharp knives, and good smells.

if you've never had a noise complaint then you're good. Nowadays, if you're making too much noise, most people won't just bite their tongue, they'll either let you or the police know. I guess you could always just knock on their doors, introduce yourself and tell them if it's ever too loud, just to let you know.

i've had security and chit come to my door before for noise complaints, people really don't give a fck anymore

If you really care, put on the music the way you want, then go down and onock on their door. See if you can hear anything or ask them if it's bothering them.

I'm thinking equipment like that might actually make the floor vibrate lol so they'll have vibrations down there.

    - turn up music to the loudest level you need it
    - go downstairs and ask them if thats ok with them / check if you can hear anything.

bam. problem solved forever in under 10 minutes.

on a side note i can hear when the guy in the room next to me bangs his girl and he can hear me when i bang my gf. i know cause he knocked on the walls once cause it was late at night and he was kinda pissed.

People aren't shy to complain about things like that, so if you haven't gotten a noise complaint yet then it's likely not an issue.

Still, I'd be considerate and stop listening very loudly past a certain time (ie. 10pm weeknights and 12pm weekends, or whatever you think is appropriate).

If you want to be hooting and hollering with your retarded music then you shouldn't be living in an apartment. Maybe stop spending so much on sound systems and start saving for a small house if listening to loud music is that important to you.

in my experience people are pretty shy to complain about things like that because they don't want hostile relationships with their neighbors

i would just turn the bass off. i've reported my neighbor twice because he or she's fuking music was always way too f*cking loud, like i could hear that chit booming when im taking in a chit in the washroom.

even if u dont get a noise complaint that doesn't mean jack chit. maybe people are being considerate to you because they're letting you enjoy your music even at the cost at of their own irritation

If they are going to hear anything, its going to be bass frequencies. Just have the bass controlled sometimes so when you do want to blast it maybe in the evening or sumin, they wont hear it.

    This.

And as others mentioned, people aren't shy about complaining.

Get yourself some of these for your subs to decouple them from the floor and reduce the amount of bass that travels through the floor. And if you can don't put the sub directly on the ground or in a corner of a room.

    http://www.auralex.com/product/mopad-mopad-xl/

Bass traps for your corners can also help keep that chit in check.

But in general, have to concur with the rest who said
    - keep it down at night
    - disconnect bass at night
    - talk to neighbours, ask them if it's too loud

Also, if you feel like it, give them your cell and tell them to text you if it's ever bothering them. That way, you can avoid noise complaints and/or police.

i used to call the cops on the indians upstairs every other day, sounded like they were wrestling deer up there.

I own a house now but living in an apartment caused me so much fuking stress.

I've always wondered this myself. I would base it on how easily you can hear your neighbors. Just try and be considerate.

Oddly sometimes I can hear conversations below me and then dead silence for a few weeks. Not sure how that works...
