You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

my 5-6 year old laptop (asus g73) has been on it's last legs for a year or so now. yesterday a power surge put it out of it's misery. today i turned on my 3 year old asus zenbook that's been having battery problems since upgrading to windows 10 and found out the screen isn't working anymore.
that leaves my with my wife's macbook that i don't know how to use, whatever PC i have access to at work (old computers just meant for email and bookkeeping) and my ipad 1 (i told myself i'd replace it when it breaks and i'm convinced now that my great grandchildren will be cursed with this albatross).
perfect time for funds to be tight...
i've been considering lately though if i even need a laptop anymore. thinking about just going with a desktop for the home (eventually) and a tablet for keeping my calendar and notes and occasional browsing.
any of you guys have experience both apple and droid tablets (i guess windows is an option too)? i'm curious if having like a galaxy note tab (i like the pen) would make more sense since i use a droid phone or if it matters at all. i don't have any brand loyalty, though i prefer to stick with a droid phone, i guess.Domicron's Basement Gym and Fun House

We have an iPad 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 8.0 (mine), Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 (wife's), and have had a couple other Android-based tablets, and I rarely even touch our home laptop. If you have the ability to send documents to your printer thru wifi, and don't need tons of storage, I'd just go with a tablet.

The wife and I, along with my two older boys (13 & 16), are all on Droids. The boys tried iPhones, but they're just not durable enough. I got sick of dropping $80 every couple months for new glass, so we made the boys switch to Android phones.
I love the sync function. I take pics with my phone, and they wind up on my tablet. I also love the ability to increase the memory by adding a microsd card. I can also transfer files or pics from one device to another just by touching them together."What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

thanks man. i'm leaning towards a droid tablet for this reason, but it's nice to know that someone actually uses the features, and that they're practical for actual use, instead of selling tablets...
later on i'll build myself a nice desktop. i'm going to setup an office in my basement, but until then i just need something easy to browse the forums, watch some videos, and haul around with me to work...Domicron's Basement Gym and Fun House

I have a Sony Vaio laptop that is about six years old - the screen broke from a drop a little over a year ago - been using it with an additional monitor.
Looked into having a guy at work replace the screen but by the time I do that and replace the battery (which is pretty much toast) I am out about $200. I also have an iPad 2 - but I never liked it.
But it has made me realize that I probably don't NEED a laptop - I have a work laptop - the only thing I am concerned about and it is probably not a legit concern is that if I ever lose my job and need to look for a new one, I would need something with a keyboard for resume work / applications.
As much as I would like a new laptop or even a really powerful desktop for home - I think the best option for me would be a Chromebook - it will do everything I need it to do and thensome.
But even that, I think it is really low on the needs list and even far down on the wants list.[]---[] Equipment Crew #37 []---[]

Hey, I didn't post my specs LOL. I really need to get a new graphics card though, I intended on cross-firing the 6850 with another on the cheap and then they stopped making them. Of course that was 3 years ago, the 3930k was ranked #2 out of all the processors and has since fallen considerably. Electronics...

You can buy that exact video card on ebay for very cheap. I wouldn't bother. If you need something better, buy a better card. You'll likely need more video ram. 1gb isn't enough these days (assuming you're running at least 1080p).
The 3930 is still a very solid cpu. My 2600 (I need to clean up the wiring & post a pic of it's new home) still does well in all games. CPUs don't show age unless you're doing things that are extremely CPU intensive. I know that sounds redundant, but gaming is almost all GPU & most don't even support 4 cores, let alone 6 + HT. Did you OC the cpu? You can probably get 4.5ghz out of it. That would be a beast of a CPU. You already have WCing, so might as well do it. ASRock makes a quality board. You have a good setup man. I doubt you'd need to upgrade for a long time, other than a new video card. Hell, I only hvae the 4790k but I killed my p67 motherboard & thought the cpu died with it.
Funny enough, I have you beat on core count(but so much slower, it's laughable). I have an 8-core 2.4ghz AMD opteron in my VM server. If I ever get back to data crunching for protein folding / curing diseases, I might build a 4 socket, 64 core beast, but Idk how that would stack up to what intel has as in power/heat dump & and just how fast i can fold proteins with it. It's more of an E-peen thing than anything else & an ideally fun project. You can tell I'm a nerd at heart.
I'd sell you my gtx 690, but it's water cooled & I don't have the HSF that it came with lol. I want a 980Ti SLI set up, but $1500 is a lot, even with funds from selling the card. Crysis 3 pushed my card that on max settings, I had to run it at 1080p. 1440 was dropping well below 30fps. Other than that, I play mostly RTS games. I should get back into FPSs. Ever play Team Fortress 2? That's one hell of a fun game that really never gets old.
Just for kicks, I'll post the specs for my router.
Supermicro X10SBA mobo (dual intel nics)
Celeron J1900 (4 core @ 2ghz)
4gb dd3 1333
120gb intel ssd (order sata 2 model)
Wesena, ITX4-v3 (almost) unibody case
I'm going to upgrade the case to something with better air flow & probably convert this into an HTPC or something.Crews: Ivanko Barbell Crew #52, York Barbell Club #95, Equipment Crew #59

Yeah, that was my thought process at this point, if I buy another GPU it would be a single high quality card because I have heard a lot of people have issues with cross-firing. Although people had amazing results with cross-firing the HIS ICE-Q version of my card, in some cases nearly doubling its performance (reason why I selected it in the first place). I realized that the CPU was overkill when I bought it, but when it comes to electronics I try to buy for the long term (if there is such a thing) so that if gaming requirements ever did push into the 4-6 core requirements I would still be semi-relevant. I have seen people online get their 3930k CPU stable @ 5GHZ, with a lot of people easily doing 4.5-4.7GHZ. My father and I BF4 together, which is ALOT of fun, and his i5-2500k is still plenty sufficient when it comes to processing.
I haven't done any OC'ing, because frankly its outside of my knowledge and I didn't want to risk burning up my processor at $600. But if I had someone who could recommend some settings I think I would be comfortable with doing it now, for the first couple years I wanted to avoid explaining to the wife I just blew up my new PC. Now I'm thinking of hunting for a GPU, DANG YOU Equipment Crew thread!!!!▪█─────█▪ Equipment Crew #58 ▪█─────█▪

i'm lucky i managed to avoid getting the custom PC/OC bug...i had a friend who had a nice watercooled rig and spent a fair amount of money on it. i almost followed suit but managed, luckily, to lose interest.
my main laptop is booting up again for some reason, so it looks like i'm going to keep limping along with it and my immortal iPad1 for a while longer. i'd like to finish trimming out my basement and clean it up a little, setup my office before building a new pc. if one day my ipad bites the dust i'll be able to upgrade to a new tablet...until then i made a promise to use it til it dies before upgrading.Domicron's Basement Gym and Fun House

AMD is notorious for not supporting the last gen with drivers. My last "AMD" card was an ATI 1900xtx. Great card at the time. I got sick of driver issues after that & stuck with nvidia for the long haul. I've had nothing but an amazing experience with SLI-ing gtx 570s & my GTX 690 (two 680s on a single card). 980Ti's are so damn expensive. I keep saying that, but it's true. I might for the first time in my life, wait till the 980Ti's are "old" and buy two later on when they are a generation old. It's so expensive to stay current. I'm lucky my 690 still does it's job.
Overclocking the 3930k is easy. If you want some help, just let me know. There's a ton of walkthroughs online & youtube videos explaining how to walk through the bios & establish a good OC. You're not going to burn up the cpu. I wouldn't dare even tell you to run the voltage beyond intel's acceptable specs. You're looking at 10 minutes max in the bios (just to know where everything is & what the settings do), then time to do a burn in test to make sure it doesn't BSOD. It's not horrible & you can do something conservative like 4.5ghz, which is almost too easy to achieve.
I ran my old 2600k @ 1.4v & was told by a lot of people that I'll degrade the chip. It's still stable between 4.9ghz & 5ghz. It's all about cooling & keeping temps down. Just set a thermal limit & never break it. You'll reach max temps before you kill the chip from voltage. I bought the chip from a guy who was binning CPUs & he ran it at 1.7v to see if it would boot. Long term high voltage is bad, but short term usually isn't a big deal.
Depending on what resolution you run, a GTX 970 for $300ish is a good card that should last a while. I've seen 980Ti's go for $600 on ebay (which is basically GTX 970 SLI in performance scaling). Just wait a year & get either card cheap.Crews: Ivanko Barbell Crew #52, York Barbell Club #95, Equipment Crew #59
