Punched a guy after he pushed his GF at fire, now he's suing me (Was i in the wrong?)

okay story time, i'll keep it short

was at a bonfire recently and having some drinks

- guy and his gf start arguing and being a bit louder than the rest of us
- gf is pushing guy, slapping him, cursing him out, apparently arguing about some other guy that the gf talked to earlier in the night
- bf is a ~5'8 ~200lb douchey looking guy, snapback, long socks, cut off shirt, etc...\
- bf claims that gf was rubbing up on the guy and flirting with him, tbh he was kind of right but still
- gf is going crazy, pushing the bf, slapping him, kicking him, screaming, etc, w.e girls do when they get drunk and angry
- bf is getting more and more aggressive as this goes on, he's bumping her away with his body mass at first and then with his hands
- eventually girl throws a punch and connects with bf's jaw, bf gets mad and pushes her to the ground
- I interfere and tell him he's taking it too far, he tells me it's non of my business and that his girl is just crazy and that i need to back off
- i back off at first but it keeps going on and it's irking me because he's getting more aggressive towards a female and that's just not right
- so im 3-4 beers in so i tell this guy to chill out and to not hit a woman, he tells me to fuk off and turns his back on me and continues to argue with his gf, so i kind of just pushed him and then flat out just decked this guy in the side of his head
- he's KO'd for about 3-6 mins, then he recovers and walks away talking about "lawsuit" "charges" etc
- i think nothing of it, then a week goes buy and i get a notice in the mail that i'm being sued by the guy

his gf has broken up with him and her and I have talked almost everyday during lunch and starbucks, tbh im kind of falling for her so i usually pay for her food and coffee

the thing is she said she's actually going to be a witness at the trial, so i think i have a good chance at getting it thrown out

did i done goof or did i do the right thing?
