Is what I was told yesterday when I went to my wife's family gathering. My wife was invited to a family get together where they met family members they never met before. It was in New Jersey at a fancy house (seems Patty has family with lots of money)
So as the night went on and people were drinking (Irish people drink a lot!!) one of Patty's male cousins (he had it out for me since he met me I could tell) approached me and and said "Yeah you look good with all those muscles, but anyone could look like you if they live in the gym, I bet you don't have a life outside the gym" Patty put her two arms on his shoulder and sprung him around and led him away from me.
Why do people think, just because a person is in shape he/she doesn't have a life outside the gym? If this guy only knew how way off he was.

Because they don't place the importance on fitness that you do. Not saying that you live in the gym or backing up what that guy said. They are justifying to themselves (and out loud) why they don't do what you do. Unfortunately, some folks lack tact and should really keep their insecurities to themselves.
Hee hee, Irish huh? You like them fiery redheads for sure.

I hear ya.
But if they don't place the importance why look for a negative on the folks who do? Imagine if you walk up to a person who is out of shape and say something negative to them? People would look at you as insensitive and an ashh0l3.
LOL. I'll tell you Holly there were some hot f'cking white girls at the gathering, a lot of them were eyeing me, but I was a good boyOn the list for Bannukah

Also, media shows bodybuilders always in a certain way.
Like, I went to a movie yesterday "Train Wreck" and the main character was dating a bodybuilder. He was portrait as a typical meathead, a little dumb, vain, self obsessed etc. (when she asked him talk dirty, he started talking about protein shakes)..so obviously they were making fun of him.
The same thing with a book I'm currently reading. The main character is dating a "fitness fanatic" and he is shown as very obsessed and self involved. It's always like that.
But low behold you do yoga for two hours a day chanting, you are some kind of spiritual mother Theresa kind of person.

BH, non-lifters are far too busy with far too little free time to work out.
By default, you "making time" to work out means:
1. You don't work very hard at your career.
2. You care more about yourself than your family.
3. You couldn't care less about your kids.
4. You don't like having fun.
Goddamn, you are so selfish that I'm getting pissed just thinking about it.
Not srs.

The funny thing is, I bet BH's actual "time spent in the gym" is maybe 8 hours a week or less (just a guess). Really a small amount of time when you think about how many hours in a week. Peeps who don't lift probably believe you have to spend 8 hours A DAY in the gym to look like BH, cuz they don't understand it's about the quality of work put in--not the quantity. That's why so many people fail when trying get in shape because they think it is just about "putting time in". You can go to a gym for 3 hours and really not do anything for yourself if you are just going through motions with light weights, machine to machine, for short durations, etc. Or you can go for 40 minutes and absolutely kill it (like BH in his vids).
I will say that since I started my first real cut in April, diet is certainly something that it is hard to have a life outside of (if you are serious about it). The gym is fun part IMO.Epic Beard Man crew

I think people who make comments like that might be more jealous than anything else
You definitely shouldn't feel as if you have to justify yourself
I think there is a negative connotation because most people don't have the ability to sustain the effort to look good and we all know it's not just about what you do in the gym, but how you eat as well"Take it one day at time"

Why would they be jealous if they don't do anything to get those results?
It's like me saying I'm jealous of you having a great career and money when I haven't done anything to get that same thing.
It makes no sense to me. If they think someone's sweating at the gym and eating tilapia, rice, and broccoli when they are relaxing and drinking beer, they are probably relieved they don't have to do it.
Now, I would understand being jealous of someone who was just born under lucky stars, esthetic and blessed. But why would anyone be jealous of someone who works hard and makes sacrifices? They probably consider themselves lucky they don't have to do it.

I always...always use 2 scoops of protein powder. I really like to blend in things like bananas and blueberries or even strawberries. The other day I blended in a peach....that was hot. Sometimes I will throw in a supplement in powder form that doesn't taste good but my protein shake is so good you can't taste the bad stuff.

Who cares what he thinks? His comments are rooted in jealousy. He doesnt have something that you have. He wants that thing that you have but he can't (not 'cant' in a physical sense but 'cant' in a sense that he lacks the discipline) so he rationalizes it by making it seem like you have to not have time for things in life in order to have you what you have.
You should've just said, "I workout 5 days/week for 90 minutes. Minus the time I spend sleeping and working, I have 56 hours in a week to do other things. Only 7.5 of those hours are spent in the gym. See, it's not that the gym rules my life. I'm just disciplined enough to keep going even when I don't want to. Even when I'm crippled and can barely walk. You might go for a few months and then stop going after finding a far less severe excuse. It's not about having the time to look like this. It's about having the discipline to stick w/it."Sept of Baelor was an inside job. Wildfire can't melt stone masonry.

I think every statement is all about perspectives, opinions, or experiences.
Perspectives - speaking from a position where you think based on what you believe you know. Like say if you've been influenced or brainwashed by the media and their expressed image of what bodybuilding is, means, and stands for.
Opinions - an idea you created based on either influence or some other thought, be it logical or illogical. Not always based on anything factual, but makes for a nice debate on a topic.
Experiences, a belief or thought formed based on something observed or applied, having more solid ground than perspectives or opinions. Always based on non-fiction events, but often times an unfair judgement or generalization can come by sharing experiences.
Question is, which of these three concepts are they using as a basis for their comments? Personally, i'd just smile and laugh about it. Someone else took it upon themselves to attempt to bring me down, but they also gave me a tremendous compliment by saying I had all that muscle. They acknowledged all the hard work I put into my craft, and it got to the point where people couldn't ignore what i'd become. That guy was in a way, letting you know he thinks you look really good. Almost as if he was saying, "dang, I wish I was him, I wish I did what he did, and looked like that. That guy is freakin cool."Back to basics full body routine: https://pastebin.com/5BgKgrMv

There is some jealousy involved. It is misplaced. Jealousy normally is. Most people don't realize that it doesn't really take all that much effort. I hit it hard in the gym, but it's no huge endeavor. It's something you do regularly. Like brushing your teeth or taking a shower! A lot of 'middle aged' folk have just sort of 'let themselves go.' When they see someone who hasn't, it is a reminder that calls attention to that fact.
LOL The comment has nothing to do with you, it has to do with the commentator!Last edited by paolo59; 07-18-2015 at 10:28 AM.

I get this a lot, from family, from friends, from my old co-workers (I try to hide my build as best as I can at my current job) and I am sure people in great shape hear it as well. The only difference is, is that I will post about it, where most wont for fear they are trying to "brag" about themselves, but I don't care about that. Because when I want to brag I just do it, hence my thread "51 never looked so good".
