seen this. didn't know the guy or his work but boy is it spectacular. very well-respected in the community as well.

incredibly tragic to leave behind his family like that. at least it happened while he was doing what he loved, but such a very cruel way for the universe to take you. makes you realize your time can seriously be any time.

So I ended up going to the IMSA race at Watkins Glen...

I love getting tack sharp shots at 1/15, I think I'm addicted to getting them at this point.

Looking to sell an old Nikon D60s with two lenses; Sigma 18-50mm and 28-300mm Quantray? Have a memory card 2GB, charging stuff, battery and a case for it all. I know it's no gold mine but prices on Ebay range from 20 bucks to 200.

I'm having a weird issue I can't get to the bottom of where despite my color profiles being aligned to sRGB across my camera, Lightroom, and Photoshop, my shots are becoming real desaturated when I export from LR to PS. Seems to only happen with my 6D. Anyone have this happen?

Haven't shot in months. I only have one lens (Sony 24-105mm F4) and even though I've used it a whole lot the size/weight makes me not wanna go out.

Pre-ordered a Tamron 17-28 f2.8, so now I'll be able to do creative bokeh landscape/street shots I've been eager to do for so long.

I have switched a lot of my glass over to Tamron. I love the new look of the lens, and the weather sealing on them is fantastic. Right now, I have the 15-30, 24-70 and 70-200. You will not be disappointed.

FWIW, Tamron came out with a new full frame lens that was very tempting. The 35-150 2.8-4 has an awesome focal range but I went w the 70-200 because I already had the 24-70.

Sony A7RIV is official. Some highlights from an article:

    To sum things up:

This camera is about detail and does that very well with the new 61-megapixel sensor
Newly designed body, better grip and more protection
Better and faster autofocus than the a7R III. More (567) AF points
26 megapixels in AFC-crop mode with full autofocus coverage on the sensor
Higher resolution EVF, 5.76 million dots
A bunch of new menu changes to make the menu better
New pixel shift function with 16 images for huge 240 mp resolution files
Price is $3,500, to be released in September
‘Older’ Sony cameras like the a7R III might get interesting price drop

Impressive but being mirrorless battery life will still be garbage and if you shoot outside a studio especially in cold conditions you'll care about this.

a7R IV battery Life (CIPA): 670. Can be doubled with a grip. Compare that to a D850 with 1,840 using the standard battery.

With the D5’s rechargeable Li-ion EN-EL18B battery inserted, the MB-D18 will increase the D850’s maximum frame rate to 9 fps. A single charge of this battery pack lets you shoot up to 5140 shots and record up to approx. 210 minutes of video.

I'll bet Nikon get this sensor for the D860/D900 and Z8 mirrorless and probably offers 4k/60fps. I don't think they have anything to worry about.

True that Nikon will probably get the Sony sensor like in the past, but the battery issue is small when you consider you can easily carry spares.

The things that are huge to me over the Canon/Nikon SLR offerings are the face/eye tracking which I love in my A7RIII, 5-axis in camera image stabilization, and 10fps with full autofocus. Other than battery life, I can't think of anything the others do better.

Also looking to upgrade from ****ty Tripod to Less ****ty Tripod. Currently I have this - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 That I bought in 2015

This one seems like a good step up, I know tripods can run upwards of a thousand dollars. Know of any better, in a similar price range, under $150?

Thinking about pairing it with this head, which the reviews make it sound like once you de-construct it, clean it and re-grease it, that it's a great deal.

So I went to yet another IMSA race... last one of the year for me. I can't believe I've been to 4 out of the 12 races this year. I'm from CT and drove down to FL twice for Daytona and Sebring, went to Watkins Glen, and finally Lime Rock Park here in CT. My lil personal farewell tour for the Ford GT's is over (this is their last year ever of racing). The #67 Ford won at Lime Rock, so it was pretty amazing seeing them win on the last time I'll ever see them in person. He made the winning pass with 7 minutes left in the race... right infront of me and I was losing my shiet. 10/10 experience.

I got a bunch of 1/10 - 1/15 second panning shots... still blows my mind every single time I find a tack sharp 1/10 shot while culling.

Damn, those are tack sharp, what are you shooting with and how did you do those? Great shots man, I like the S-Curve raised black thing you did there, not sure what its called, I've tried that on my photos but it doesn't seem to fit nature shots as well, idk.

Catching up on youtube photography bloggers this past week, I tend to stop watching them, the farther away from photography I get, with all hobbies it ebbs and flows for me based on how close I am/was to a trip, just rarely do photography near where I live.

Anyone on here shoot with Olympus? Considering switching over from Nikon, for sure going to rent a body and couple lenses on my next trip, should run about $265 to rent the gear I'm interested in.

All of those were taken with my Olympus em5 mark ii, lol.

What Nikon body do you have and what Olympus body are you thinking of switching too?

m43 isnt for everyone, but I really like it. I get GAS and think about switching to full frame mirorrless all the time but I'm too poor to actually upgrade. I love how small and light it is. I can pack so much shiet (body, 3-4 lenses, tons of nd filters and accessories etc) in a regular backpack for hikes and whatnot. It's very light so I can taking panning shots alllllll day at races without getting tired. I loved that during the 24 hour Daytona race and 12+8 hours of racing at Sebring this year. The size/weight makes it easy to carry when randomly out and about, I dont think I'd carry a larger/heavier ff camera around as much. The IBIS and weather sealing are both some of the best, if not the best in the camera industry. It has tons of neat little features and is very fun to shoot with. There are some legit amazing lenses. Oly 75mm f1.8, any of the Oly 12,25,45 f1.2 "pro" lenses, Panaleica 42.5mm f1.2, Oly 300mm f4, etc etc. Top notch lenses, but they are very expensive considering its just a poverty m43 mount.

There are plenty of cons. Mainly the tiny sensor. Just lmao @ iso performance... just lmao @ auto focus. I shoot ALL of my panning photos with manual focus pre-focused on the track. C-af isnt even a thought, just lol.

The new EM1X is a very, very nice camera. But again... lmao, just lmao at spending $3,000 on a m43 body. Like wut.

I'm waiting for the E-M5 mark iii release. I'd be interested in upgrading, but I already know it's going to be underwhelming and overpriced, as is tradition for Olympus the last couple of years.

I have a D7100 with 10-24mm, 35 and 50mm primes and then the basic 80-300mm, rented a Tamron 150-600mm that I enjoyed alot, would be my next purchase if I stay with Nikon.

Interested in either the E-M5 II or E-M1 II, for lens I'm thinking the 7-14mm f2.8 PRO / 40-150mm f2.8 PRO with the new 2x Teleconverter MC-20.

When I look at my Lightroom focal lengths for my top shots, there is very little between those two ranges, so I don't think I would need a 3rd, maybe a 50mm equiv Prime, not sure just yet, would be a later purchase anyways.

Most of my shots are landscape and wildlife, reading articles by wildlife photographers who have tested the E-M5 II and while they wouldn't switch from top of the line Nikon or Canon gear to it, I figure for mid-line Nikon, it may yet be an upgrade, I don't see myself going full frame ever, maybe if I win the lotto or something like that.

Last Thanksgiving I went to the Badlands, if the weather holds up this Christmas I'll shoot up there and rent the Olympus gear to test it out and then compare. Something like $180 for 4 days or $265 for 7 days.

Perhaps I just need to upgrade some lenses, I'm not thrilled about the sharpness of my photos, quite possibly user-errors that cause this, and a couple times now I've almost not brought my gear along due to the size/weight when flying.

This is one of my favorite shots, if the RAM was in better focus.

I'd strongly suggest the EM1ii over the EM5ii (or wait for the EM5iii).

The EM1ii just got a huge firmware update like a month ago that woke it up. I guess they upgraded the c-af significantly. You'll like the 20mp over the 16 too.

They just had a "trade in sale" a month ago too. You didnt actually have to trade in your gear, just get a quote for your used gear to get the discount price. The EM1ii was going for like $1,200. I'd look around at used ones.

    I have the 12-40 2.8, PL25 1.4, and 75mm f1.8. Oh and a $99 brand new 40-150 f4-5.6 which gets surprisingly good motorsports shots. I'm happy with my lenses.

There's always coupons for the rental sites, so look out for those. And I'd recommend renting an extra battery while you're at it.

Based on Average Used Ebay prices it looks like
    EM-1 Mark 2 - $1,200
    7-14mm f2.8 Pro - $900
    40-150mm f2.8 Pro - $1,000
    2x Tele - $430
    Total - $3,500

    Looked into things a bit more, the cheapest way to dip my toe in so to speak, all used prices;
    EM-5 Mark 2 - $550
    12mm Rokinon - $200
    40-150mm f4.0-5.6 - $80
    Total - $780

The 2x Tele is new, so no "used" price right now. Really interested to see the price of the 150-400mm once it's released, but my guess is 2-3 grand.

Worth adding that I do a handful of product photography for my axes that I sell, and while the Nikon is superior to the Phone, I find that with the D7100 it's a pain in the ass to get pictures to the phone, even with that Wifi attachment thing, it loads all the photos, and crashes often, really drains the phone batteries too, would be nice to have that be more seamless at times.

Why are you so interested in the 2x converter? It's only compatible with the 40-150 f2.8, 300mm f4, and upcoming 150-400. And the results are just meh, image quality takes a huge it.

You are going to LOVE Olympus for product photography. The "High Res" pixel shift mode is perfect for that. It not that great for landscapes or when anything is moving, but the results are amazing for product photography. Check out some youtube videos on it.

You are going to LOVE Olympus for product photography. The "High Res" pixel shift mode is perfect for that. It not that great for landscapes or when anything is moving, but the results are amazing for product photography. Check out some youtube videos on it.

random high res shot I took. I wish I took a low res version to show the difference. https://live.staticflickr.com/7151/2...35629d92_o.jpg
300mm just isn't enough reach for wildlife I found, used a 70-300 for about 5 years then rented a 150-600mm and got some of my favorite shots with it. Figured the 40-150mm PRO with the 2x would get me back to that range, I know the quality can take a hit, but I need to look more into it, and see if it still isn't as good as the 3rd party Tamron 150-600mm.

That is a sick high res shot, you tripod it up for that?

    I've always been all over the board when looking at gear, probably why I don't very often. A step in the opposite direction for size/weight would be to just upgrade to full frame, used;

    Nikon D750 - $900
    200-500mm f/5.6 - $950
    16-35mm f/4.0 - $650
    Total - $2,500

Either Full-Frame or M4/3s from Crop Sensor, I'll be sure to rent the gear for a trial run first.

Easy workaround as you know is to blend in a normal exposure for the areas with clouds, water, etc. using a layer mask. Whatever remained perfectly still where you want maximum detail will be extra sharp. That being said we're already at a point where it's typically overkill. I mean how large are images being displayed/printed?

I shoot every landscape as a pano these days with a 36mp camera on a multirow head that eliminates parallax. It's a lot more work. I do it because in my mind I want to walk away knowing I can print it 80 inches wide or have it appear pin sharp on an 8K display the same size. However the reality is I rarely need that. How many people will frame something for their home larger than 40"? There's a lot of pixel peeping going on but at the end of the day 99% of the stuff people look at are low res jpgs on instagram and ********.

I was out last week doing some night photography under a full moon a few hours outside the city and the experience of being there was better than the photography will ever be. I know the images turned out well but I haven't even opened them up on the computer. The point being just experiencing nice locations can be more enjoyable than the photography even if that's the reason we're there in the first place. So sometimes we need to relax when it comes to whether something is technically perfect and getting carried away with the technology. Enjoy being out there first and foremost.

Bruh, don't take the wind out of my sails, the thought of upgrading gear after 5 years is exciting.
