    NYC apartment.. Help brahs

Will be attending john Jay in NYC next fall and spring semester.
My friend is going to NYU as well and we wanted to live together in an apt. How does renting an apartment work... Can you use student loans for individual housing? Is a student loan just a check for housing or is paid directly to the school and used toward your housing at the school and not individual housing?
Also, is it true you need an income of 30x the apartment monthly rate? Called up some guy and he said he doesn't take "student loans" and you need to make like 30x the rent

you could call the dicks that are giving you the loan and ask them how it works
then call apartments and see what the requirements are

John Jay right next to Roosevelt hospital? I've been to the hospital before. That whole part of manhattan very pricey. You would most likely be well of staying in school dorms if thats possible

I'm moving in August to attend NYU Stern for my MBA and have been researching apartments. I don't know if your loans will work differently but mine are based on a cost of living budget so my loans will basically guarantee to pay my rent. Even so, loans are all the same, you receive the money to yourself (technically I believe the funds go to the school and the school disburses the net after-tuition amount to you at the beginning of the semester) and do with it as you require.

Most apartments are 40x monthly rate (or your portion of the rent) or you need a guarantor. Student loans don't count as income. If you don't have a friend or family member that would be a guarantor you can pay a guarantor agency to do it, but it will obviously cost a bit. On top of that you'll have to pay first/last months rent and maybe a broker fee if you go through a broker or get a fee apartment.

For how the loans will work for you, just call the financial aid department.

Big difference between Brooklyn and Manhattan bud. You will be living in Brooklyn at best on that budget.

Brooklyn close to Manhattan isn't much cheaper than the more affordable areas of Manhattan that I've been looking at (UES, around NYU). It's cheaper if you live further out, though.

This is false. It is a cost of living that is given by the school, it doesn't guarantee to pay your cost of living in full. The cost of living portion is historically known for being severely underestimated.

Here is 1 year at Stern, all-in costs:

    NYU Stern Tuition & Fees
    Tuition $63,720
    Registration Fees* $3,962

    Living Expenses
    Room & Board $25,200
    Books & Supplies $1,980
    Local Travel $1,050
    Miscellaneous** $7,852
    Loan Fees $218

    Total $103,98

Good luck living on 25k all in for a year in Manhattan.

That's not for one calendar year, it's for 9 months. So your living expenses are really ~$4,000/mo. That isn't tough to live on, you can find studios and 1br's for $1800-2200/mo and cheaper if you live with roommates. MBA summer internships typically pay in the ~$30k range, so that helps, too. Also, you can always get more money based on your actual financial needs with an appeal.

Since when is UES considered an affordable area in Manhattan?

UES averages the highest price per square foot in the US....

I said more affordable. Just go to craigslist no fee apartments and put in $2,000 as max rent and see where the hits are.
