    Fixed Dumbbell Handle help

Can someone recommend me a fixed dumbbell handle that is a little over an inch in diameter? I am looking for anything up to 1.25 inch. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to build my own dumbbells but I can only seem to find the cheapie .87 inch diameter handles that feel so small. Thank you for any help.

Search around for York SDH's. I made a pair of 185's a few years ago and the handle I got was a York SDH#9. They measure 1 1/8". I got mine from Dotmar Fitness in Mississauga, Ontario.

The CFF handles are 38mm (about 1.5 inch).

They used to offer 30mm as well but they are being discontinued.

If you wan to build your own, here is something you might consider.

Schedule 40 1" (pipe size) steel pipe has an inside diameter of 1.049", and an outside diameter of 1.315". Starting with 1" solid steel bar cut to your desired db handle length, slide on a piece of the 1" pipe cut to the length of your desired grip width. Then trim it all up with your choice of collars.

To deal with the .049" of play between the 1" bar and the pipe, you can use some shimming material to firm it up, or you could fasten the pipe to the bar with pins or screws.

Knurling will probably depend on what resources you can muster to do it. You can go Third World and spray anti slip compounds on the sleeves. I think some forum members have had favorable comments about it.

    Food for thought.
