My CCNA is about to expire this July, might have to start cracking on CCNP to renew it.

How are you getting on? how close are you to going for the CCENT, or do you already have it? I noticed you were banned and thought it would have been a good excuse for you to get in some more study

sounds like a good plan. i've read the CCNP is more fun than doing the CCNA.

I read some material about the 300-101 ROUTE‎ and was hooked on how detailed it was. Definitely more interesting than the CCNA level.

So I see alot of people mention CCNA certs. I assume most mean CCNA routing and switching, the de facto networking cert right? I'll have CCNA Cyber Ops by August but unsure I'd say "I have CCNA" when I refer to it, because then my employer will find ways to get me to do networking chit lol

I'll have 3 years as a "Sys Admin/Junior Sys admin" experience this October.
Other than that all I've done is complete HS and get my CompTIA A+ which expires next week.

I'm going to let the A+ expire because with my experience I figured A+ is pretty worthless to me. But I have been getting the itch to progress as I've finally hit my cap at around ~50k/year at this company. And I might get another small raise every year but there is no more room for growth.

As you brahs can imagine as a "Jr.Sys Admin" I wear almost every hat you can think of except development. So I am a jack of all trades currently but master of none.

If you were in my shoes and just looking for a higher paying job. Would you go... (spare me the "what do you like" question. I like getting paid, for a job I can do competently. I have no passion for anything in the corporate world except CEO'ing)
    - Sec+
    - MCSA:SERVER
    - Other cert???
    Are you not entertained?

Exposure yes, I don't know if I'd call it a hard "3 years of MS:SERVER experience". My boss is very laid back and prefers the less I do the better. So I've never built anything from the ground up. But I do mess with a lot of the features and services when things need to be done. AD, group policy, troubleshooting, V-Sphere, etc.

But MCSA does seem like it would get me to that next tier... quicker than a sec+

In a bunch of stupid meetings I've sat in people always mention docker with AWS. I'm still not 100% sure what it does.

I see you guys mentioning certs in here. I obtained my bachelors in cs 2 years ago, but went into a different, unrelated field. I want to get into IT, though. What's a good cert path?

A+ if you otherwise have nothing else to show on your resume (volunteer, internship, etc etc). MCSA, RHCSA or CCNA depending what you want to work with.

I think that's a good general one, if you have a degree I suggest skipping the A+

On spread but this is pretty awesome. I'm going to keep this for myself.

edit: although, I see this is a comptia road map, so that explains why they put net+ or server+ as "intermediate" certs when I can at least attest that Net+ is by and large on the same page as a+ with a narrower focus

Just finished my first internship and am back in school for the summer term. My employer offered me to come back in September, I haven't formally accepted yet. Should I go back or look for something else, and if so what kind of internship should I be looking for based on my experience?

My long term goal is to get involved in cyber security, short term is networking. Here is my resume.

Additionally a resume critique would also be nice if anyone has the time.

When you say employer, do you mean the internship and they've offered you a full time gig or another internship opportunity?

If it's another internship, I guess there's a few questions to be asked. Did you get what you felt like was relevant experience in the field? Will your internship allow you to do another aspect of IT or will it be the same? Did you get paid?

It was paid, they offered me the same position for another 4 months starting September. I either take it or try something else. I do feel it was a great foot in the door experience, a lot of my classmates got jobs relevant to business analyst and were essentially doing stuff of Visio all day. Theirs a variety of IT internships available so I was just curious based on my experience what kind of job I should apply for if my end goal is cyber security

Quick Update - I contacted my previous employer and told them I would like to take them up on their offer for me to return. Not sure if I did the right thing :/.

I was being paid $15.00 for this job, now that I've accepted it, how should I proceed with asking for more money? Our communication was done through email.

To respond to your above post, if you want to get into cybersecurity, networking is probably your best point of entry IMO.

Was wage discussed when you accepted it? If so, it's probably too late. Otherwise, I really don't know how it works for internships, but at my last job I simply asked for more money based on myself being a good fit at the company, having a great skillset for the position etc. No idea if you fit in or even did well at internship when you had it, but no harm in asking.

sounds like a good plan. i've read the CCNP is more fun than doing the CCNA.

What is your budget and do you have a gaming rig? Ideally you want a system with a good CPU and tons of RAM. I use my gaming rig since I already have a decent CPU and 32GB of ram.

Sitting the ccent or CCNA? Are you using Packet tracer, GNS3, real lab?

You srs about requesting the ban? I might do it myself.

Well i went through all 76 videos of CBT Nuggets with Jeremy, couldn't help but wonder why he quit the networking career to teach especiallly with all his trolling in the videos ("You're going to love this next nugget...subnetting... it's my favorite thing in the world.....lol"

Anyway, i have Odom's book opened at the chapter with the Cisco syntax, going to start it tomorrow. I'm finding it all a bit boring to be honest. It is a chit load of stuff to remember and i think it is because you cannot really apply any of it outside a job environment unlike say programming where you can build something for yourself, but i think i'll hack it out for another month and see how i feel once i start getting into some labs.

Das it mayne! Decide if you want to go down the server or network administration "rabbit hole", then your decision will be much easier.
