Brahs, this may be a silly question. But someone who works support at a NOC should have a really good understanding of reading a PCAP and working with wireshark right? Fairly often I will be working with a 3rd party and their NOC team and the guy can barely filter the PCAP or decode the PCAP so it shows HTTP or SSL info and not just TCP level. This seems really strange to me, but I am not too sure what the normal job responsibilities are at a NOC.

Well bruhs, I'm having a crappy Monday as well. Everyone is good at something it IT, and everything is bad at something. I think I'm going to ask if I can keep working on the Sysadmin side instead of going to the SOC. Hopefully I don't get fired for asking, I guess we'll see. I really like this company, but I can't see myself in the NOC. I suck arsh at networking.

Here's a pro-tip. During an interview, let them know that you are confident in your abilities that even if you do now know the solution off the top of your head, that you know where to find them.
IE: Technet, technical forums/white papers, software manuals, co-workers, ect.
As a "troubleshooter", it's more about knowing the right questions. If you know what questions to ask, you can isolate the problem and then finding the answer is extremely easy.
Employees love to hear that you are "not afraid to ask for help", "learn quickly", and "document/write things down".
Experience comes in handy because you isolate faster, but it's still the same process.Forever alone? Attraction and keeping the girl chasing you - http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=131498033

Yea my problem isn't interviews. Its getting them because lack of experience in the field. I'm very direct and very sure of myself, ontop of being very personable. I don't wana say this cuz it sounds dumb but more as a metaphor "no sad kunts, only sik kunts" has totally helped me grow as an individual lmao. Helps me push myself along with everyone I interact with. thnx misc

These are relatively easy and can be done in a day, serious.
Powershell - learn the syntax, practice it with Powershell ISE, learn to look for **** efficiently with it
Python - Can be complex, can be simple. Write some code, expand it
Bash - Also cake
The syntax for most scripting languages are very similar
If I were you, hold off on the pentesting stuff until you are 100% sure you have a grasp of the basics. Otherwise, it won't make any sense and you will get nowhere. The above post is a 100% complete lie

You can't, srs. Pick 1 thing to be your primary focus, learn the fuk out of it, and then add secondary skills as time and interest allow. If you try to take on too much, you could end up a "jack of all trades, master of none." An employer isn't looking for an IT guy that can also do some web development, because they already have a web dev team. Much in the same way as they're not looking for a web developer that also knows some IT stuff, because they have an IT department. Point being, you don't want to miss out on a sysadmin job because you spent too much of your time learning Java.
Plus, fuk that chit, if my computer goes belly up, I call IT, head for the lounge, and browse Tinder until they tell me it's fixed.Last edited by depaulhifi; 06-16-2015 at 01:54 PM.

5/29/17 - **The day I decided to take my life seriously and start approaching girls, and learning openers, mid conversation phase shifting, building an emotional and physical connection. I need to get more confident in general, and get rid of my anxiety. PM if you have helpful guy advice and can instruct me on the right material to read. Thanks.

So my boss just hired a DBA/Analyst, then sent me an email this morning asking me to figure out what permissions a consultant needs on a database to run queries and get him connected by ODBC in excel.

I still need to go interview for the position, but it is a help desk tier 1 type thing... remotely tho. I will be dealing people calling in problems from out of state branches. (Or so I think) $13/hr
BUT
Some other guy called me from some company I cant remember the name now based in Kansas also interested in having me apply to be a Database Technician for one of their branches here in Miami. He told me it would be me and one other technician only. I gather it's pretty much "server babysitting and maintainance".... but pays $20/hr... im rather stoked about that oneAre you not entertained?

applying for a federal job, IT Specialist (systemadmin). I think I have a good chance to get it to.
Would still hopefully be able to do my tech job servicing different contracts through out Tokyo, but it certainly beats my PC repair position which has no growth potential besides the experience I gain in day to day repair/builds.**MISC STRENGTH CREW**

Exactly. I think she is just so used to me doing everything, that it's habit.
When I did ITIL I took an online training course. There is so much information, I can't imagine anyone studying for the test on their own. Plus, I only had 2 weeks to get certified for a project I was about to join.
I can't remember what company I went with, but I really like cbtnuggets to study for certs.Forever alone? Attraction and keeping the girl chasing you - http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=131498033

Q
What does a system admin do? Like what **** do you have to know to do that? Every company ive worked for has them (obviously), but all my companies have run different systems because they were different businesses.
So do you learn 1 specific program (or whatever) and then apply for those job? Or is "Systemadmin" the same for all jobs?

If it makes you feel any better, my boss asked me to do a ton of meaningless work a few days prior to me quitting. Just said "mkay" and signed out of Lync, been offline for the past week lul. Turning in my computer tomorrow.
Tbh, they do a lot of sh!t, the smarter ones do even more. But as the title states, they administer/manage systems according to some org policy (some no policy at all)The above post is a 100% complete lie

This could really be a lot of different things depending on the company. For example, to a smaller company it could just be the "IT guy" who does everything from basic troubleshooting (tier 1) to network and server maintenance. To a big company, it could be broken down into more specialized roles, like windows or linux administrators who work only within those environments setting up, maintaining and configuring servers on a tier 2 or backend support level.
My guess is most sysadmins started out as helpdesk or entry level IT support types and moved into these roles when they got experience under their belt. That's my plan anyway (currently tier 1 help desk). Some of the other guys who are actual sys admins might be able to chime in with more specifics.
