Depends on where you want to go? I'm part of the "no certs crew" and learned everything about networking from school or on my own.

The place I work in is unique in that I started off as a sharepoint sysadmin, but that got old real fast, so I moved into networking and security. Now I do routing and switching along with a bunch of security duties like managing securid fobs and kicking machines off the internal and vpn network.

A+ is only good if you want to focus on end devices if you want to work in networking and network security aim for the CCNA since the networking world is dominated by Cisco. Im currently studying for my CCNA because I want to progress further in this field.

Starting off with CCNA isn't the way to go though. Definitely start with the Net+ or CCENT if you want to do networking.

CCNA brah checking in, still studying for INCD1, I'm going to sit it before the end of the year, strongly recommend Todd Lammle's CCNA routing and switching study guide for you brahs, made understanding key concepts super easy. currently supplementing Todd's book with CBT nuggets and cisco academy.

Got my MCSA yesterday (u mad OP).

Going to have a career dilemma for the first time very soon. Do I stick with money/stability or do I take a risk. Wanting to head into more of a cyber security role and the latter may provide that for me a little further down the line. Got some thinking to do.

Awesome thread OP - I haven't posted on misc in a long time but thought i'd sign in and post something here.. There's some great info in here and yep setting up some kind of home lab is the best thing you can do. I've learnt pretty much everything I know by just installing / configuring something at home. My current home server is an old Lenovo W520 laptop with 32gb of RAM and I've spent the last few weeks trying to master SCCM just for the hell of it. Later on I'm going to have a play with Windows server 2016 and the new Hyper V server technical previews.

I've just been offered a job as an Infrastructure Analyst after climbing through the 1st - 2nd line ranks for around 6 years. For anyone in the UK looking into IT, it seems that most jobs don't care about degrees/qualifications - they are more interested in your experience and examples of you experience.

Nope, lol. skipped the MCSA and going down the MCSE route. It's not a risk if you're good at what you do. If you aren't down for the studying and the time it takes to do InfoSec, don't bother.

Yup, very good. Sybex books are awesome, for sure. Another great tool is INE.

awwwfukkk, System Center is the ish if you're doing cloud-type monitoring. I love it, still messing with it though. System Center is a beast in it's own bruh. If you have any good sources, please share.

Look at Eli the Computer Guy on YouTube. He has a really good Linux class.

There's a lot of different fields in security. Network Security is fun, cyber security consulting is cool as well.

What do you mean why? Supposedly the CLI interface is faster but I have to disagree with that unless you've been doing it for years. CLI is more powerful though. Cannot disagree with that.

In on this! Just joined the Air National Guard as basically a network engineer. They'll send me to tech school for that, and then I'll be working towards my BS in Information Systems (have about 1.5 years done). Not sure exactly what I want to do in IT yet, but security sounds really interesting.
