I go by Google’s definition of what an SRE is suppose to do since they created the name. Their function is to manage infrastructure with code. https://sre.google/
I guess other companies are trying to lure in talent by using the “SRE” buzzword.

hmmm.. maybe you are right in regard to SREs. A couple of them told me that they have to work on client issues every time I ask them about my ticket. hahaha. maybe it is their excuse to get rid of me.
I agree with you. I rather support internal users than external clients. I hear horrible stories about clients from my friends in IT. Geesh that customer is so unprofessional and rude. Good job at telling that customer off.

Fellow IT brahs, what is your position how much do you make and what certs do you have?
I posted here way back to help me get started. I eventually got my A+ and held down a IT job for 2 years and still going. I been complacent ever since I landed my job and have not pursued other certs. Going to go for my net+.
Also how hard is it to make 80k a year in IT with 2 years of experience? I have 2 and a half but I only hold my A+.

A+, Net+, Sec+, Proj+, associates, bachelors, going to do MBA this coming fall. 74k
I live in an area where the cost of living is very cheap, so my salary makes me a high-income earner. I also supplement my income with my online business. Boss tells me the agency is grooming me to be a regional director. That job is 90k. Hope that comes sooner than later. I forgot, my title is System Administrator V.Last edited by niospecv; 04-22-2021 at 07:59 PM.

Skip the Net+ and go for the CCNA.
I'm a devops engineer, just shy of $140K depending on how much OT I do for the year. The only valid cert I have is the AWS Devops Pro.
Agreed on location is key to making a lot in IT. I live in a HCOL area and I don't plan to buy a house in this area anytime soon, way too expensive even with my income.Last edited by SynapticCleft; 04-22-2021 at 03:25 PM.

Currently a SQL Server DBA. Making $100k. Three degrees (2 undergrad, 1 grad) none of which are in CS or IT-related areas. I've got an MCP cert, but I think it may have expired lol. The amount of experience I have is better measured in decades and covers all areas except networking.
It's been extremely difficult for me to find jobs in I.T. despite my experience. As Invictus said, degrees allow HR drones to check off boxes. Same with certs. As a result, I've been stuck with entry-level jobs for the most part. My current employer decided to take a chance on me and my salary went way up as a result. What's helped me in the past was keeping my nose clean so I could pass background checks. That's how I got my first full-time job: the five people before me got dequeued.

Is your area as expensive as Cali? Over here the house prices are ridiculous.
It really depends on the job position you are applying for. Some requires and some don't. You can make good money without a degree. Having said that I do have one cert, an undergrad and grad degree focusing on CS not IT. Data analytics/data mining makes pretty good money too.
I agree but some companies are so adamant about hiring people with degrees only. It sucks.

It's entirely dependent....on basically every variable possible. Were you exceptional on your 4 month contract? Did you get any certs/degree in that timeframe to assist in justifying a payraise? Does the new contract pay more?
If the answer yes to all of those, then probably. But maybe not? Nobody can answer that for you.

Cool! If you are 100% WFH then you can basically live anywhere. Hope the commute does not suck if you do have to go into the office.
Quick question. I've been googling but have not found the answer yet. Might as well ask here. Since S3 is global is it possible to create a bucket but not have it show up on the bucket search list? The bucket should still show up on the S3 console search list even if the block public access is enabled on the bucket correct? The reason that I asked is because this team gave us S3 URL to their bucket but when clicked on it it shows all permissions denied (also with unknown error under Permissions tab) and I cannot find the bucket name under the search list even though I have Admin rights.

The commute isn't so bad, before COVID I was only in the office 3 times a week to use the gym lol.
It's impossible to create an S3 bucket without supplying the region. Sounds like they might have created the bucket in a different account. Even if a bucket is private you should be able to see it listed in the console. However the AWS Console is slow at times and might not be showing the latest info. If you have the awscli, you can use it to list all of the available s3 buckets.

That is so funny. My office has a gym too but currently the whole office is closed. Everyone is working from home which I like more. Don't like staring at cubicle. lol.
You are right. It was under a different account. It was strange how the team told me one account and the URL belongs to another account. Lol. Do you use AWS Organizations to manage all your aws accounts at work? We have so many that I'm thinking it must be expensive.

So unnessesary how much I've been slacking. After getting my PMP Jan 2020 and my Master's May 2020 I ended not landing any Product or Program Mgt jobs at the big tech companies like I was aiming for after many interviews, and I've been completely demoralized the past 6 months or so.
My org has a new partnership with AWS, and our internal AWS team is getting huge support from our executives. I'm about to study for SA-Associate cert and try to move into a product role there.
