    Yup!

About to go to the hardware store to pick up a paint pen.

I lied before. I do have 10 total 45lbers but I have a crap ton of smaller plates to do too. Way too many 5s now. I think I will buy some PVC pipe or something to set them up on for the paint jobs so I can do both sides at once. Of course that means I then have to paint the inside later so it's two sessions no matter what.....

for sure! Thought about paying to sand blast and then powder coat but this is probably going to be better.

The guy that had the painted plates that I own painted them over rust with a paint brush. I think just to sell them too. Could see brush strokes, drips, and even hairs stuck in there. Rust started coming through of course.

Picked mine up from the blaster this evening. Started to go the wire brush/stripper route until I found a guy to blast for $2/plate. 48 plates totaling about #1000 for $100. Gonna fire up the sprayer tomorrow. Gonna use Rust-Oleum Hammered black and max the xylene when I mix to kill some of the gloss.

Nice, I should've gotten a quote for just sandblasting. Quite for blasting and powdercoating was $1/lb and I'm told it doesn't come out as well. Wasn't going to drop $700 for an inferior product.

Pro tip in the stripper. Works much better if you rinse off all the extra funk before hitting it with the wire wheel. Got down to original paint I think that way. Got so many flecks of crappy paint all over from the first couple plates.

I am in the process of restoring some of my plates. Got a pair of 25's and the paint was bad, it chipped and was repainted thick were you couldnt see the milling marks very well. Didn't have much time yesterday, but I took a wire wheel to one of the backs to clean it up. might try and finish them up this memorial day weekend.
my collection of preUSA stamped yorks are growing, I have 4-45's milled, 10-5's with 2 that are milled, and 2-25's milled. Need to get some 10's and 2.5's, debating whether to spend the money and get 35's. Might complete my Eleiko powerlifting disc set first.

how many plates can you paint with a can of the rustoluem?

After having painted 1000's of pounds of York plates, I'm embarrassed to admit I've forgotten. I think you can paint a whole set with one can, maybe two sets. Better to have extra paint around than to run out, is my suggestion.
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

I was tempted to do that with mine. However the finish isn't 100% uniform. Minor discoloration from the patina is still present in a few places which is insignificant for a repaint but would drive me crazy if I clear coated it. I'm sure a sandblaster could take more off and make it more uniform if this was the goal though. I really want to make mine look close to original too.

I'm no expert and haven't weighed them but I don't see how any significant amount weight was lost. Maybe a few grams on the big plates but that's probably gonna be close to a wash when I spray a new coat on. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong though.

it can't be much and since they're considered quality for being in a +-2% weight tolerance, I can't see paint being more than 0.05lbs on a 2.5lb plate.

those plates are looking awesome runCMD!

Here in CO I have never seen a single piece of york iron or bar on craigslist. Seen a few squat stands but nothing else.

I wonder why that is. You east coast guys seem to see stuff pretty regularly. Is the general consensus that things jsut get more sparse the further west you go?

Its definitely sparse the CO market. There were a couple of York bars posted in Denver a couple of months ago, but they were priced pretty high. That's been it for York stuff...

I've been wondering that myself. I suspect it has to do with most of the manufacturers being east coast firms, with some (ex: Ivanko) on the west coast. We seem to be stuck in the middle where the larger brands (ex: Hammer) are more likely to have sales & distribution set up.

I suspect the folks in CO buying York are seeking them out specifically, buying new, and are keeping it long-term. Which means there isn't much of a secondary market.

    Just my observation / guess.

Yeah, I'd imagine since York is in PA that the mid-atlantic/east coast sees a ton more of it. I tried to sell some roundheads recently and was just getting crazy lowballed...there's just too many in PA. Once I put them on eBay, I was getting lit up with offers. Mostly from the south to southeast region. I ended up selling them all online.

I definitely would - however the set I got was repainted very very very badly, and the other singles I got (at least of 45s) are either repainted or very very rusty. I will probably leave the singles that I got of smaller weights as is

I'm in California! Can't get farther west in the contiguous states. They see them regularly I think yes - I have to jump on any deal I see to get them. Got one pair of 45s from a huge auction with a couple thousand pounds of weight, another few plates from random groupings, an almost full 70s set with bar I bought from an original buyer. The rest I have had shipped to me.

I have seen at least two sets of 80's York bumpers show up in Denver. And ABQ has had York stuff, if you are willing to drive several hours.
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

If they are not too bad, I'll just rub them with a mixture of about 1/3 mineral oil and 2/3 minerals spirits, a trick I picked up on the 1st thread. I will repaint if they are already repainted or completely rusted over. Stripper works well for the paint and I use citric acid for the rust. I have attached some pictures of some quick work on a pair of 60s. Another reason I like the oil method is I am lazy. The entire process of treating the dumbbells took 5 minutes.

Picked up an extra set of 100 lb roundheads. These ones are USA stamped. Would be willing to trade if anyone needs them. I'm about 2 hours north of Boston.
