You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

    York USA Plates Older

I have some old york USA olympic plates. I dont know what they are worth and was wondering if you could shine some light on them for me. I bought a bunch of them off of an older gentlemen who had kept them in his basement dry and safe for about 30-40 years. Please just let me know! Thank you! I attached a picture.

Can confirm: These do exist. Guy in Lancaster, PA has at least one with milling visible in the picture and wants $300 per plate (has a total of 7 for sale).

Looks like unmarked (1940's) change plates and split sleeve bar for sale in Missouri, but it could just be a bad photo and they're actually milled (5s, 10s, 25s).

I'm new to vintage York dumbbells, but I think I'm off to a pretty good start.

I didn't have a single vintage York dumbbell until 3 1/2 weeks ago. I responded to a month old post on Offerup back in December and didn't expect a response. The seller unexpectedly sent me a message in mid February asking if I was still interested. I ended up getting 1220 lbs. of dumbbells for $35. About 750 lbs were vintage York's and I was hooked. I've since added to the collection through a bit of searching marketplace, and some luck.
I'm trying to restore them when I get any free time, but I'm in the process of putting together a gym in the basement so it's been a slow process. Hopefully I'll learn a lot by reading through this board.

That was a super good deal! If you flipped some of those dumbbells you could speed up putting together that home gym. With not much out of your pocket cost to you. The vintage York dumbbells are fetching some high prices. Congratulations on your good luck!

After my last two finds I now have an extra 75, 65, 40, and pairs of 35 and 30. I've been buying and flipping since early December and have spent on just that stuff $1735 and sold stuff for $1685, but I've got to keep a lot of the items that I really wanted and still have more to sell. Of that total $600 was for 625 lbs of dumbbells this week, and 575 of that were vintage York's.

    Uh, what?

How you gonna come into the York Club thread and tell someone to flip their Yorks in exchange for other gym equipment? Go away.

How do you like this bar? Just about every video I've seen you're using it, so I assume you like it quite a lot. I've always thought it looked like a good bar for bench press. What's the knurl like compared to your wife's Rogue bar? She has an Ohio Bar, right?

The whip is not an issue (unfortunately) for me on bench but I like the thicker 32mm bar more than the 28.5mm Rogue Ohio bar. That's just preference, but I have big mitts.

The knurling is not crazy aggressive. It's just ok.

Only thing I don't like about it is the oddball weight of 52 lbs. But I use micro 1 lb plates on each side and my collars weigh 1 lb to get an even 55 lbs.

For deadlifts I have a Texas Deadlift bar. That is a whole different ball game.
Thanks, I appreciate the info. I don't there's another bar out there like it at 32mm. Certainly very few. Might be one I'll pick up eventually.i like oxide bars quite a bit.

My bad. Point taken, I love my York equipment. Please forgive me for my momentary lapse in judgement. LOL!

The plates in York link and the plates in question appear different. I’d take the latter given the choice.

They are the same plate, newer font. Agreed with your latter statement. The patina makes them non-USA plates look not half bad.

Up to 50 starting from where? What's the total width of all the dumbbells? I'd probably start there. You don't want to buy a two level 70" rack and end up with 3 feet of unused shelf, nor a two level 42" rack and run out of space for the last pair.

Not mine, a friend found this (single) 55 lb milled era plate. Not milled. Looks identical to 25kg, but I've never seen the LB version before!

    edit for reference (AttyGuy's plate):

Special or not, those York plates are just plain cool! The newer design of these plates is missing that obvious nostalgic feel.

I feel like an idiot posting here, but I was hoping someone could give me some insight regarding vintage York weights. I searched the forums last night and I'm more lost than when I started. Obviously I'm embarrassed to admit that I know less than nothing about York Barbell Company and it's products...they've always been way out of my price range and all the plates look identical to me (Lol!). I'm making an effort to learn though.

The pics I've uploaded show a well used vintage York weight set consisting of a "300 lb weight set" (it's actually only 245 lbs plus the bar). I'm not even certain if all the plates shown were actually produced by York or not. From the pics you can see that some plates show the numbers stamped larger or smaller than others, the colors of the plates range from yellow, green, black (or red) with green painted over the top, even one pair of plates that are red on one side and green on the other. The barbell appears to be 1" and about 5' in length.

    Now my questions...

    1) Does this appear to be a complete weight set as you could have purchased it back in "the day", or is this just a small collection pieced together by someone (as I'm assuming)? I understand York used several colors on their standard plates for a period of time, but I'd think they wouldn't vary colors so much within a single weight set. Clearly the numbers are stamped in various fonts/sizes as well.

    2) Is it possible to place a general "age" on these items with any form of accuracy (and does it even matter in the first place with York being so popular and readily available?)?

    3) What is considered an honest "fair market value" (or even a low/high price range???) for this weight set? Trying to use Ebay and Craigslist last night to estimate this on my own just bummed me out.

    4) Does anybody else think those Holdtite collars are too cool for school???? I can't believe collars like those didn't get lost or broken over the years.

Thank you, I appreciate the help!

These are probably the most valuable item here. They typically sell for ~$150 on eBay. Regarding the plates, most of those typically sell in the $1-2/lb range atm. (I'm no expert on vintage equipment, but I sell some here and there - primarily so I can buy more equipment.)

Thanks for your input Duplicitous. On spread.

Are any of these York plates more valuable or harder to find than the other plates in this set?
