3 Generations of 35's
I was blessed to be able to trade some roundheads for a pair of Counterclockwise 35's and 25's this week, thus bridging the gap between the 4-spoke and Clockwise 35 sets.
All but 2 of the shown plates are milled. Obviously a couple are destined for cleaning and painting. The brown color on the next to last set comes from Linseed Oil, used to preserve the plates.
The YORK font on the older 35's has always been a favorite of mine, but I remember using the 4-spokes in college, creating a nostalgic value for me.
Dieselmike and Atty, thanks for the info previously and the encouragements.

You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

Wrandom. Great job displaying them in age order like that for us. There are so many variations in the directional placement of the "35" and the Font of YORK. Specifically look at the "R" Some have a straight "leg", other a curved "leg". And they don't necessarily correspond to the direction of the "35"
In your order from left to right (I'm bot 100% sure you correctly have them in age descending order, although that is my guess):
Counterclockwise "35" with a "Straight Leg" R
Clockwise "35" with a "Curved Leg" R
Clockwise "35" with a "Straight leg" R
Now what is missing? One combo not shown above is:
Counterclockwise "35" with a "Curved Leg" R

While we are on the Vintage "35" topic. I so happened to make a little Christmas Eve trip this morning to finally complete my set by picking up these long awaited milled 35's. I guess I can update my sig line. That set is now complete. Dexter, If you see this what I would love from you is a definitive time line placing all 4 of these variations in proper order once and for all. If anyone knows, I know it will be you. Of course in the WAAAY early days, there was the 35 pound cast plates like these with no "35" cast in. I know you have that one too. So you can make a timeline of five variations of this particular style.

Nice plates Dieselmike. I'd love to see the chronological pic from Dexter. I don't ever expect to own the older 35's (no cast poundage). I use what I collect and I am stretching now trying to explain to myself what I need 4 pairs of 35's for...
MonkeyT, people who don't want 35's have never run out of room on the sleeves of a fully loaded bar, or realized that keeping the weight closer to center helps balance the load...Wrandom

While on the topic of York 35 lb Oly plates, I have six of them. I'll have to go check them out again, but from what I can tell the 35 is in two different places and the "O" has a different shape. The "Rs" are all the rounded variety. I think all of them are milled on the back. Not sure why they are painted yellow and red. I never recalled these being anything but black and rusty.
Haven't been on this forum in years. Hopefully, my photoschmucket links will work.Last edited by Doctor Morbius; 12-27-2015 at 08:35 PM.

Morbius, Sweet plates. Please post a pic of the backs of the plates. Did the DDs come with any of the 35s? Not much you can do for the plate with the cracked hub, except get some JBWeld, sandpaper, and paint. A few guys have done this cosmetic repair. The plates can be used afterwards, but not for anything dynamic.

Thanks. I'll have to take some updated pics. It'll be a couple of days before I have the free time.
I bought them all at the same time from the same place, but I'm not sure they're part of a set. I also have unmarked milled York 25s, 10s, 5s and 2 1/2s that most likely are from the same period as some of the 35s.

I don't think anyone alive knows. There is some evidence that York painted Oly plates red, but it's not conclusive.

Lathed 35's
Guys here are a couple of photos of a pair of lathed 35's I picked up (and sold) earlier this year. When I picked them up they had MANY coats of thick hack pain (including white) and I was initially disappointed because they weren't milled. It wasn't until the paint was removed that I realized they were lathed. There is a 35 "stamped" into the outer edge of both plates - at the 6 o'clock position in this photo. Does anyone know if this edge stamp is actually a stamping or cast-in?
I have 2 pairs of milled 35's that I'll post photos of if they don't match up with any of the others above.
And pre-thanks to whoever displays my photos.()---() York Barbell Club #73 ()---()

I just checked the backs of the plates I posted above. No pics yet. I should get to it in a day or two. I'll have to bring them inside as there's no way I'm going to get decent lighting outside any time soon.
The two DD 45s: The backs do not appear to be milled or lathed.
The single non-painted 35: Milled
The two red 35s: One milled, one not
The three yellow 35s, One lathed, two neither milled or lathed.
I don't know what any of this means.
EDIT: Fixed description of yellow plates. Checked them in better lighting.Last edited by Doctor Morbius; 12-29-2015 at 04:52 PM.

It can be difficult to date York plates without some external reference.
Plate 1 - Part of my late 50's/early 60's DD set. The last DD sets had numbered change plates, from 35s on down. In 1967, DDs went away and York moved to the more commonly seen regular York 45s. In 1967 onward, York milled plates. Pre-'67, York lathed plates.
Plate 7 - From an unclaimed storage locker. This mint 35 and its mate were found in an abandoned storage locker with two pairs of mint 45s in the original York shipping containers. The boxes were marked with contract information and had been shipped to an East Coast USMC base in the late 1970's. Estimated manufacture date is around 1978.
Plate 8 - A USA-marked 35. York started marking their US production plates to distinguish from their overseas (China) productions plates, the first of which were the "Hercules" Olympic plates. The date at which York began marking plates with "USA" is estimated at around 1994.
Plates 2 through 7 - All are milled. Note variations in lettering and numbering. Clockwise "35" plates are presumed older, probably based on the numbered, lathed 35s from the DD era. Larger "BAR BELL" lettering, based on my limited sample set, would also appear to be an indicator of an older plate (plates 1, 2, and 4), though some plates have the clockwise "35" and the smaller "BAR BELL" (plate 3).
The lone 15-kg plate, plate 4, has similar lettering and numbering to plate 2. Plates 3 and 6 are almost identical. Only the direction of "35" varies. Plate 5 came from an estate sale and was probably sold in the late '70's to sometime in the '80's, according to the former owner's sister. Note how the "R" in York is out of place with the Rs on the other 70's/80's 35s.Last edited by AttyGuy; 12-30-2015 at 05:21 AM.

Here you go. To me these look stamped, but why stamp a plate with a cast 35 already?
I can only attach 1 at a time (??) so I'll follow with the 2nd right after.
And I just love the look of these 35's - regardless of "R" style, clockwise/counterclockwise, big BARBELL or small.
They are just cool.()---() York Barbell Club #73 ()---()

Interesting. The old, unmarked plates had the weight sometimes stamped on them. Yours, however, have the raised weight on the plates, so it's odd to see the weight also stamped into the plate.
A side note: some believe these are not stampings, but cast markings. I believe they are stamped markings.
I believe you uploaded the wrong picture. It's the same as the left plate. . . ETA - I put the proper link in the post. These plates also have the raised numbering?Last edited by AttyGuy; 12-30-2015 at 05:55 AM.
